View Full Version : Yet Another Game Doctor Question

So in my browsing yesterday I came across a Fellowes CD cleaner for a ridiculously low price. It's another one of those affairs where you spray the CD, put it in the device, and spin the crank.

Now, after reading all the stories about Game Doctors on this forum, I am still left with two questions:
-Do only Game Doctors leave a distincitve pattern on the bottom of the CD after cleaning, or is it the same for all similar devices (including this Fellowes thing)?
-Is it really more effective than proper rubbing with an approved cleaner and cloth?

Every device like the Game Doctor uses a light sanding technique to "even-out" the scratches so the laser can read through the scratch to the media part of the disc.
Since the scratches make a deep " V " on the disc , sanding it down a little makes it a more shallow v and the laser doesn't refract off the V but reads through it like it's supposed to.
Thats why a lot of times a toothbrush with toothpaste will do the same thing. (but I don't reccomend this as I've only had about 20% success with this compared to about 80 % success with a Disc Doctor.)
So since they all " sand " a layer or two off the disc they all leave a rough pattern.
One way I get around this is to use a spinning (not orbital) car buffer and a nice wax afterwards and buff it back out to it's original shine.
The only time I can't fix a disc this way is if the scratch is all the way to the media or if the scratch is on the other side. Then you're basically screwed.
That's why I believe in back-ups. My Halo got scratched on the back side and won't work now. I paid $45.00 for it and now I'm screwed. If I had a back-up I'd be fine. Now I have to spend $20-30 on E-Bay for another one. But that's a different topic. ;)
