Yep, I went ahead and built a dedicated Neo Geo MVS box. It's great for playing Neo games on the relative cheap and as a rewarding project just to build on its own. I started about two months ago, but got held up by various stuff. Now it's all done and working, and I've slapped some pictures online with text to string them together. Don't mind if anything doesn't make sense - I'm very tired and have no real control over what I wrote ;)

If you enjoy the pictures even a fraction as much as I've enjoyed this project (and will continue to enjoy it), then you'll be doing pretty well.

Mine is a general supergun, but it's mostly used as a host for my MVS 2 slot.

Hehe, yeah, apparently they do ;)

That was the best use of an old 386's case I've ever come up with.

Had the first non-me player of Last Blade over here today, and he was very impressed with the delightful Neo goodness. I somehow have the feeling that most other game buys will be put aside to allow more MVS cartridge purchases. And that's not a bad thing - that's a good thing.

That's wicked cool dude. I'd love to make one of those, or get an upright Neo cabinet.

But hell, if I was going that far, I'd just try my hand at building a MAME machine. Which would suck. Because I have absolutely no knowledge of electronics or woodworking (well...nah, I have family that could get me through the woodworkin).

One day. :-D One day when I get enough money, or something.

I wish Neo Geo MVS hotel units were actually sold here. :/

I am very very very envious of this. Any word as to the total price of the project, since I'm currently saving up to try and do this myself. I thirst for MVS joy...

That is most definately a good thing. MVS along with CPS2 is the pinnacle of 2D gaming.

I wish Neo Geo MVS hotel units were actually sold here.

I've seen a couple for sale on either ebay or Yahoo Japan. Prepare to pay over a grand for one of those. Not worth it.

I felt the same sense of gratification when I finished my MAME cabinet. (http://www.geocities.com/zenoszone/mameframe.htm) Nice piece of work. You should be very proud. Enjoy, you earned it.

Any word as to the total price of the project, since I'm currently saving up to try and do this myself.

Here's the breakdown for you, but note that a little luck was involved:

- MVS board, 1 Slot - acquired in trade for a complete NES Game Action Replay (which cost me $5 six months ago)
- Computer case - free donation from the basement
- Commodore 1084 monitor - free donation from the basement (received free a year ago with giant lot of Amiga stuff)
- JAMMA Harness - $12 shipped from eBay
- Neo Geo joystick - $20 shipped from eBay
- Assorted bits (fuses, audio jacks, audio cables, hinges, mounting screws) - $17 between Radio Shack and Home Depot
- Black paint - free from basement

I think that about does it for parts. So about $54 total in this case. Of course, trading for that board was a major help, as well as the help from all the crap in my basement. Though to give you an idea on the board, the guy was initially looking to sell it for $50. I also paid $35 shipped for my Last Blade cart, and $29.75 shipped for Samauri Shodown IV.

You forgot the quarter slot!

I replaced a mechanical quarter slot with a coin button that's wired right up to the harness. With each button press, it registers one coin. And according to the MVS's book keeping, I've pressed that button 72 times since Friday evening. Nice.

excellent work! feel free to drag that over to the next meet for show n' tell. if you want some more coin-op hardware lemme know, my connection has tons of parted out stuff. he also has a few NEO-GEO cabs wasting away there, might be some good deals to be had on games.

so thats the secret project, i'm quite impressed.

The funny thing is--there are supposedly only two in existence manufactured for use in the U.S., and one of those sold on eBay for only $2000 or so. I'd guess that nobody knew about the auction (the forums which linked me to it originally had a poster on it who thought he knew the buyer and was highly agitated to think that "that loser" got it...hehehe)
