Considering that there are at least two or three more available on eBay for around six to ten bucks, I'm guessing this price might be excessive.

Also, how many Sega CD games actually make use of the RAM Cart? I'm bidding on a CD deck at the moment, and I'm wondering if I'll need one of these right away.

I dont think they are that rare. if you are getting a segacd it is a must have. The sega CD has internal memory, so a lot of games are set up to use it. However there isnt very much. I think you should get one.

I can second the need for a RAM Cart.

But I got mine complete (with box and instructions, all in very good conditon) for about $20. At the time I bought it (about a year ago), that seemed the going rate for a complete one.

Mine still has a $56 price sticker on the front also. :D

Advice taken; thanks.

I wasn't planning on paying much more than $20 for one -- but I'd prefer it cheaper if at all possible. Of course. :)
