We're having an F Zero Tournament, and I need some help. The only F Zero I've played is the track I'll be playing on with Captain Falcon. I've only just found out that I can use custom cars to race, and now I'm at a huge disadvangate! Here are the details so far:

Track: Port Town: Long Pipe (Sapphire Cup)
Racer: Captain Falcon
Best Lap: 49.943'

I've got the track down but I've been using Captain Falcon. I haven't done anything else so I've nothing earned. What I need to know is:

1. What is the best machine I can build that will control similarly to Captain Falcon?

2. What parts do I need?

3. How do I earn them?

I'm going to play through the cups as best I can, and probably do Story Mode. Can somebody tell me how my lap time compares to a fully equipped machine?

Is the competion just for best lap here?

So far, best lap is about 43 seconds. My personal best is about 47 seconds. You'll probably need Death Anchor or Sonic Phantom to compete well (buy them from the shop). Alternatively the Frost Lynx G4 custom car is very good all round (if you've completed all the cups on Novice you'll have all the parts to build it).

Nope, it's not for best lap, but I figure a good lap score should help me determine if I have a chance or not. Thanks for the advice! I'm in the process of completing sapphire cup right now, once I've won all three I'll try out your reccomendations. Any others?

Those 3 are the best time trialling cars out there in general. Or you could try Black Bull if you want to use the "snake" technique (lots of practice needed there though!)...

I'd like to learn the Snake technique, but I doubt it is very useful for this track. I've also been experimenting with boost techniques, and I noticed that when you release the A button and press it as you go over a boost, it makes a thunderous sound and seems to increase the speed, but I can't tell for sure. Does this work?

Also, on some turns I've been using a technique where you hold the trigger button opposite the direction you're turning, then let go and hit boost at the same time, but again I can't verify if this boosts your speed. For example, if I'm making a 90' right turn, before I hit the turn I'll hold right on the stick, and hold the L trigger, then as I hit the turn I'll release the L trigger and hit boost. It seems to help but I can't be sure.

The turning with the triggers and getting a small boost is intentional. It is also why the snaking technique works...

Aqua Goose
Super Lynx
G4 engine (I forget all the little numbers)

Gives you Frost Lynx G4. You can get all the parts needed just by beating Sapphire and Emerald on Novice. Very fast, but you'll have to learn to drift turn and use the L and R buttons because it can't turn very quick otherwise. Still, good car.

Outside of that, If you have access to the rainbow pheonix (chapter 1 very hard), its really good. Black Bull+Snaking is another good suggestion. I've always been a fan of Red Gazelle and Golden Fox, as well.

I still haven't earned the G4 engine. I've come in first overall in all four cups in standard and first overall in ruby and sapphire on Expert so far, and have opened up 3 chapters of the story mode. Do I have to do something else to get the G4 engine?

And so far I've shaved my best lap down to 45.543' Thanks for your help everybody! Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Yes... beat Emerald on novice ;)

I know it may seem picky to have to play the game on the easiest difficulty, but some of the car parts are only unlocked doing it on that level.

Here's something I've discovered:

When going over a Zipper, you get a longer & faster boost if you only go over the left or right edge of the Zipper. You'll notice it looks different than the center portion of it. If you run over the center, you get a boost, but like I said, your boost is faster and lasts longer if you only go over the edge...

Also, I noticed that when you Release and press the A button when you go over a zipper, it makes a thunderous sound. It doesn't really speed you up, but it gives you lots of control, which can be really helpful if you need to hit multiple zippers in a row.

Just make sure to use a high grip craft when racing on Aeropolis, and make sure to use the slide turns.

I dunno how drift tunrs work on this track, as I have not used them before at all. Not once.

I like the White Cat for that track, personally...

Yay I came in Second Place overall! Thanks everybody for your advice! The tournament ended with three 5 lap races, the first was Mute City: Serial Gaps, to determine the ladder, then Lightning: Half Pipe to determine winners/losers brackets, and finally Big Blue: Ordeal to determine places.

The tournament on a whole got wiped by one of the leads who beat everyone by about 15 seconds, and whom I lost to by almost 30 seconds (to my credit I had only practiced the last track for maybe 10 minutes before competing, but he was the better racer so I don't mind). I won a game boy player, 75 dollars credit at the company store, and a free GC game of my choice. Woot!

Nice going!

Pity there won't be anything like that here... otherwise I'd easily take most of the opposition ;)
