View Full Version : Atari 2600 games re-made on the NES?

I was curious if any Atari 2600 games were re-done on the NES. You know, like Space Invaders, Missle Command, stuff like that.

I know that there was quite a space of time between the two systems, but the reason that I'm curious, is because I had a Atari at 7 or 8 years old, and I ended up getting a NES during my high school years. I'm going to be 33 in a week or so. Anyways, I remember playing alot of 2600 classics, that were ports of arcade games at the time, but I'm wondering if they ever came out on the NES, where they would be almost arcade perfect?

Nothing legit, AFAIK, besides Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.

I think the reasoning behind this is that people were trying to forget the Atari since the industry was still a bit shaky--even after a few years of Nintendo's success.

Besides, only Nintendo's early "Black Box" releases are perfect ports. Ports of arcade games, but good ones nonetheless.

As far as 2600 arcade ports that made it to the NES... the answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no (as far as "arcade perfect" goes)

Right off the top of my head...

Joust: The NES version is a horrible rendition of the arcade game.. even the 5200 version is better. That being said it's closer to the arcade game but I vote the 2600 as 'more fun'.

Donkey Kong: The NES is a great translation of the arcade game, but far from "arcade perfect" for many reasons. Still.. it's better than the 2600 version.

Donkey Kong Jr.: Ditto.

Mario Bros.: Great version on the NES.. again, not arcade perfect though.

Defender/Stargate: Like Joust.. a HORRIBLE version of the arcade game. I prefer Defender/Stargate on the 2600.

Galaxian: NES version is top notch. I'd say close to arcade perfect as you're going to get :)

Space Invaders: NES version is good. Not arcade perfect.. but the best pure port you could find at the time. 2600 Space Invaders is a different animal alltogether though with all the variations (but in the process throwing out elements that made the arcade game great)

Xevious: The NES version is bliss. I'd say pretty darn friggin close to the arcade game. Forget about the 2600 proto.

That's about all I can think of at the moment. Anyone else? :)

Space Invaders: NES version is good.

There was an NES version? When? Where? Perhaps a proto?

I need answers!

Galaga came out for the NES as well.

And you also had Gyruss, but that was a WAY modifed game, with stage bosses and the like.

Ikari Warriors, Xenophobe, Track & Field, Winter Games, California Games, Klax, Commando, Popeye, Q*Bert, Double Dragon, Rampage and Gauntlet (heh).

Possibly Ghostbusters, Roadrunner, and Superman? I don't think I've played both the NES and 2600 versions....

Actually, Griking, it's Super Pitfall on the NES. Different (crappier) game.

Um, there is no Altered Beast for NES.

Yes I think there is. For the Famicom actually.

Thanks for the clarification on the Space Invaders Racoon lad by the way.. Just for the record I tend to think of Famicom/NES releases as one and the same, but I guess I should be more specific :)

I'm lucky to have Space Invaders on a multi-cart.
I've got more than 10 multis, but only one has Space Invaders on it.

Question wasn't on arcade to NES, it was games atari 2600 and NES both had.

The NES Elevator Action was awesome...Easily one of the best ports on the console.

Millipede on NES rocks harder than all of the others combined IMHO. My favorite game of all time...:D And BTW...no Galaxian on NES.

Again, we have a Famicom-to-NES confusion. Galaxian was on the Famicom, but not the NES. (I think -- I know I've never seen an NES version.)

And just to chime in a little further, I'd call the NES ports of Pac-Man and Galaga easily the best 8-bit versions ever. My opinion, sure, and I've never played the 5200 or 7800 ports, but I think I'm safe in saying that.

One question, though -- why didn't Super Skate Bros. ever make it to home consoles? :) (Anyone even remember that arcade game?)

Duncan :D

EDIT -- Okay, seriously, are my posts invisible? I swear to God, they have to be...this post was up for a good hour-and-a-half before the next one (saying effectively the same thing) arrived. It's not personal (we're all just putting out what we know, after all), I'm just wondering why no one even saw this.

So I guess if you asked if anyone had any NES carts for sale you'd also consider Famicom carts to fit the bill. :hmm:

Sure absolutely! (although I don't see myself buying anything NES related anytime soon). LOL

Truth is back where I come from, for the first couple of years in the nes/famcom introduction, Famicoms and thus Famicom carts were the de-facto STANDARD and NES carts were the "imports". I had a U.S. NES deck of course and took my fill of both NES and Famicom carts and of course just used an adapter to play the Famicom stuff. :) Later on though, the NES became the norm.

Altered Beast for the Fami does exist. Asmik licensed it from Sega and made a very interesting version of the game. I've got the ROM for it around here somewhere... I've never actually seen the original cart.

Although pac-man never came out on 7800, I will say that the 7800 Ms. Pac-Man blows both Tengen and Namco versions out of the water, in terms of the speed of the game. If I recall, the tengen one has that stupid pac-booster too (or at least did on genesis...been a while since I played the NES one), so that's not making friends with me, either.

Winter Games and Summer games by epyx.

It's AMAZING how much they squeezed out of the 2600 late in it's life....these games are very close to the NES versions, believe it or not. he 2600 simply was not ever designed for this...

Not that the games are that great to begin with, but for 2600..not too shabby.
