View Full Version : Flawed XBox hardware?

In a thread ("new Zelda bonus disc") a debate came up how flawed the PS2 hardware is compared to the GC and Xbox. Is it actually true, or a rumor spread by game mags, retailers, and gamers?

Participate in the other polls for PS2 and GC if you own more than one of the current systems.

No problems personally. I've seen a handful of them returned, generally the Refurbished systems, and the culprit is the laser assembly.

I recently sold my Xbox. Not a bad piece of hardware but I've had a few games crash on it which I always thought was weird (and aggravating). Is that considered "faulty hardware" or are some games buggy and prone to locking up?

I'd say the bugs are due to many of the games on it simply being memory-constrained versions of PC games. Take Morrowind, for example...memory constraints caused so many problems that the developers suggested that one shouldn't move items found in people's houses.

The games are buggy for the XBox sometimes, but I've yet to have had a single hardware problem!

Would it have actually HURT to make all three of these threads ONE thread?

Explain how the voting would work... ;)

I have one that had a chewed on controller plugged into it , and it made the Box stop working (it wouldn't even go to the dashboard screen).
Anyway I called Microsoft and the gave me the code to re-format the harddrive and presto , the problem was solved.
And I haven't had any problems with any others I've had.

I've had games hang up on me as well. I don't know if that's a serious problem with the hardware, or an annoying problem with the software. It usually only happens after the game has been running for a while, which would equally implicate sloppy memory management by software or overheating of hardware, methinks. HOWEVER, when I opened up the window next to it, it seemed like I got fewer lockups...

But, since it's out of warranty, and the hangups don't happen often, I'm going to hang on to it. Plus, I have to finish Buffy and Bloodrayne and Gunvalkyrie.

Well, until recently I would have been able to answer 'no' to this question. This, though, isnt necessarily Microsoft's fault. I went down one day to play it, and it wouldnt turn on. I took it to a local store so they could fix it, it ended up costing 60 dollars. (replaced mobo and new cpu).

After I got it back... I was loading up a halo single player game, and it froze. It then restarted back to the main screen. Halo loads slowly now. Also, KOTOR has had video sequence problems, and audio and skipping problems. I am not sure if its from dust when it got fixed.. or if it went bad.

Anyway, I did have a ps2 problem, and various things never fixed it. I think the ps2 has the worst problems out of the three. Also, I have never heard of a problem with a GameCube from a person I know. I think Nintendo makes extremely solid stuff.

Heh! Was this on a Bethesda tech-support forum? I'd love to read the original post...

Thanks guys for participating so nicely! The more participate, the better.

Very interesting reads about the specific probs or no probs. These are really nice indicators of potential problems, weaknesses and strenghts of hardware.

You know, polls like these might be handy down in the Restoration forum for the older consoles...

<-- EDIT: Woo-hoo! I got fruit! :)

I've never had a problem with either of the 2 XBoxes I have..even though one is not used as much as the other.

Ok, change my vote to yes. My X-box started acting up last night. It freezes up while playing Dvds and games. After it freezes up and is restarted, it won't even load up to the Dashboard. Now I gotta buy a memory card to transfer my saves.

Spoon check your boxes first; lots of Xbox games can't be transferred to the memory card.

Not a single complaint with the hardware. Some games freeze up and aggrevate the hell outta me, but the system itself is awesome.
