a collector friend of mine recently scored an SMS pile at a yardsale with some unusual carts. several have a red "sample" sticker on them and he has an other wise blank case with a typed label reading "mk-5109-s1 ALESTE" the game also ALESTE on its title screen but its powerstrike...

he wanted some expert thoughts on what these are, anybody got an idea?

i have some pics from him also if anybody wants me to upload them

Hmmm... that copy of Aleste would be something to see (Aleste is the original name of Power Strike, for those that don't know).

Im almost positive the Power Strike opening screen says the same thing.

I'm willing to wager the game's on ROMS and a dump of said ROMS would reveal it to be 100% identical to the Mark III version.

It's a sample, NOT a prototype.

actually he did mention that one of the carts does not work and it flashes a sega mark III screen, i think thats the AK:LS cart he has. so what about the "sample" sticker? i guessed it might be from a retail display, i dunno did sega ever have any american divisions around boston? tonka maybe?

It's a sample, NOT a prototype.

and a sample IS a prototype.

I have some SMS protos with the red sample label on the back.

nice find!

I came across a reprogrammed title once, it was at a flea market. A dealer was running a 7800 with Pole Positon 2 but it really wasn't Pole Postion 2 it was actually Pole Postion 1. Heres the weird thing about it. The billboards in the game were like the ones in the arcade version. In case your wondering why I didn't buy it the dealer wanted $75

Yeah, and a Power Pad test cart's a prototype 'cause it uses EPROMS.

It is a prototype for sure, just like the Captain Silver I think was originally found on this board. Aleste is what the game was called in Japan I believe, which would explain the mark III.

Are the sequels of this game indeed Musha for genesis and Robo-Aleste for Sega CD?

well i did figure out the boston area connection- tonka owned parker bros and parker bros had a game studio in nearby beverly mass. funny since this is also the guy who found the parker bros ewok adventure proto, also from the same beverly lab.

come on, nobody wants to host these images?

Yep, along with Space Megaforce (SNES), Gun*Nac (NES) - and don't forget the game that started the whole Aleste series - or at the very least started Compile on the right track - Zanac.

I have a similiar find, but it has a real label on the front and that "sample" label on the back.
I don't have any pictures of the board, but it does have EPROMS.

Some parts of the game seem to lack the background images??
I don't think this is normal??

umm, test carts don't use eproms.

these sms carts are pre-production versions of released games. they are also on eprom boards that are made especially for prototypes, not production games. please explain why you don't think these are prototypes.
