My fiancee and I have just gone through Myst (4 days) and Riven (5 days) in one straight shot, and now I can honestly say that I've become a fan of this type of game. It's almost an addiction, you get these insanely hard puzzles and when you finally figure them out and beat it it's a huge rush of exhilaration. Oh, and the endgame to Riven? You don't know what to do and there's apparently 5 different ways things could go wrong...
Ahhh, now I'm out to look for more of these games that I tried and failed at earlier in life. 7th Guest/11th Hour... I remember one that was very weird, it was sponsored by Learning Channel or maybe one of the more "Intelligent" developers, there was the narrator that sort of helped you along, and then the bad guy would appear as the screen went red-tint and played this scary-ass music. I played it when I was 15 and it still freaked me out.
Return to Zork and Zork: Nemesis fall under this, as does "9" and many more that I suddenly want to play. Oh, and Myst III: Exile...
What do you all think about this genre?

I was always useless at these types of games. I barely got anywhere with Myst & Riven (though I've still got Myst on the Saturn so I might go back to it). Clandestiny is a PC title worth looking out for. I think it's from the creators of 7th Guest/11th Hour. Great animation and more puzzles to pull your hair out to.
I quite enjoyed 'D' up to a point to.

I think i've been a bit more successful at the genre myself, though i'm nowhere near an afficianado of it.
I beat 7th Guest and loved every minute of it. I also beat "D" which btw, D stands for Dracula but I haven't gone much further into the genre than that unless you include Leisure Suit Larry, Quest for Glory and alot of those other great Sierra oldies, which are kinda like it.
I'm no expert, though I
really like the genre, it gets overdone after a while. I seek more instant gratification. :2gunfire:

My mum loves these types of games, although I have no patience for them.
*sees mum staring at the same screen of Myst that she was an hour ago*
*mutters something unintelligent and walks away*
But I will say that Myst, Riven and Myst III have some of the most beautiful environments I've ever seen. I love the concept of them.

I like the fact that you're not 'spoon-fed' through the game. You've just got to figure it out yourself. These days most games have Prima guides, maps and walkthroughs in magazines and on the net almost on the game's release. One of my bugbears, that - I'd rather that everyone was left to discover things for themselves.

Journeyman Project 2 and Obsidian might be worth checking out too. I've been hearing good things about the similarly-styled, recently-released Rhem as well.

Quite a large list of things to look into... does anyone know the name of the game I mentioned in the first post? I can't remember the title for the life of me.

Myst is an awesome game. That one puzzle in the game is so frustrating though...we actually had to use sharpie on the monitor, but our mom made us wipe it off.
