Anyone know a possible way to bring your saved game of FF7 for PC to your PSX and vice-versa?

Well....

I know there used to be some type of thing for the PC where you could plug in a memory card, and then download saves from the net which you could then play. Since FF7 is a port to PC though... the save files are probably different. If there is a way, I havnt heard of it.

Yes! Yes, there is a PSX<->PC save game converter for Final Fantasy VII. It supports DexDrive saves and the format used by homebrew DexDrive equivalents (which do exist).

The program works reasonably well; I have used it along with the DexDrive saves available from GameFAQs to access the Debug room with the PC version. Unfortunately, I don't think I got it to work with the "date Barret" save.

You want to go to http://www.fortunecity.com/rivendell/dark/433/index.html . If the link doesn't work, you can find it somewhere in the Utilities section of Zophar's Domain.

They have a couple new ones at the local EB here for $4.99.
Let me know if you want one.

Like I said, homebrew DexDrive equivalents exist. You can build them from a bunch of electrical components and a floppy drive cable, but it might be less trouble to just buy a DexDrive.

Let's see, the link was in the readme...

Yeah, I've gotten my Dexx Drives (both N64 & PSX versions) at EB for $5 when I was in NYC, and when I came home, they had them here too.

There is also the MPX-change that works with N64, PSX, and Game Boy saves for like $8 at EB too.

Now I understand why there was a Dexdrive post in the Atari hacks thread...lol @ Kaine.

Anyways...I've heard not-quite-so-good things about the PC version; how IS it compared to the PSX original? Frame rate better (the guys at GameSpy say it's 15 for something or other, I think the rendered battle system)?

I think they cleaned up the translation a little in the PC version. It is also missing the bug which let you duplicate items using W-Item.

Aside from that, I wouldn't know; I've never compared them side by side. I think you need a reasonably fast computer (i.e., not at all resembling the original minimum system requirements) to keep the videos from going out of synch with the sprites, though.

What I'd really like to know is, do the visuals improve if you use hardware rendering instead of software rendering?

The main problem with the PC port, graphics-wise, and I'm sure you'll read this elsewhere as well, was that they left the backgrounds at the same low res (320x240?) they used for the PSX version. The game does look better with the 3D acceleration than software rendering and the 3D parts of the game DO look better than the PSX due to them being in 640x480 resolution as opposed to whatever TV resolution is.

Off course, they do fix some translation errors from the PSX version, so that's also a plus. My only problem with it at the time was I had no gamepad-like controller so I had to play it using the keyboard. That got old, fairly quickly.

Hmm, I also remember it being quirky to get running. You had to have the exact drivers for your 3DFX card if I recall correctly. I haven't been able to get the PC version to run in WinXP so forgive my memory if I'm wrong, as it's about 5 years old.

In other words, not a good port. Yikes.

I'd get it, but it would be nice if it ran!

Oh, and the TV's res is 640 by 480. The PlayStation, on the other hand, runs...what? 320x240?

The bad, low-res backgrounds can partially be solved by anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering (actually, not partially; AA and AS do wonders for it, it looks really good).

Hardware looks exceptionally better than Software, but it only effects the polygon models ("well duh, Del!").

It was quite simple to get running with my GeForce 2, and everything was perfect. Get the latest detonater drivers, download the RIVA TNT patch (despite the name, this patch works for all nvidia cards; it allows hardware acceleration on some cards that didn't include the drivers by default [like my GeForce 2]). Copy over ONLY the new FF7Config.exe program; in there, choose the Riva option (I think...it might be TNT, just try them both), and select hardware acceleration from the dropdown.

Now, see, like I said. I had this running flawlessly on my GeForce 2. Perfect. Backgrounds looked beautiful, the character models were orgasm-inducing.

Then I ended up getting an ATI Radeon a week later.

Trying to get an ATI card working with FF7PC is likely a venture that will kill you. If anyone here does want the info for it, just let me know. But you will NOT be able to get anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing going, so the backgrounds look like crap.

Gamewise, it's pretty much the same. The controls are a bit weird until you figure out what there PSX equivalent is (which sucks when they need two PC buttons to take care of the effects of ONE PSX button), but when you bind em all up, you're good to go.

I also THINK (think, remember, it's been a few months sinced I played FF7PC) there were a few translation differences. Plus I heard the Lunar Harp was buried in a different place, but I can't remember where it was buried originally anymore, and I found it no sweat.

What else, what else... Oh. There's a "FF7PC XP" patch floating around. Gets the game working with Windows XP if you're getting trouble with it working, and allows you to get past the chocobo races (which is a real bitch without the patch; it'll crash). DO NOT GET THIS PATCH. They screwed with the MIDI and sound; I'm not sure on the technicalities, but there was a massive discussion of it on a forum I use to go to. The patch changed the way FF7PC output the MIDIs, so everything sounds fucked up.

http://www.qhimm.com/ff7_chocobo_patch.zip

That's the Chocobo Patch to use. It only effects the races; something about an offset pointing to the wrong place or something.

http://forums.qhimm.com/viewtopic.php?t=1245&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60

That's where the issue was discussed. Good source of information.
