View Full Version : What do SMB3 and Recca have in common?

Not much that I can think of, but today I found out that you could successfully make a Recca cart out of an SMB3 cart. I don't know exactly how he did it, but I received it from my contact in Japan today in his latest package. I've since been playing Recca on my Tri-Star and loving it.

I am talking about an NES SMB3 cart, btw.

ubersaurus - drop me a PM... I'll see what I can do.

I had no idea that the NES was even capable of handling a manic shmup. Yet here it is. Don't ask me how Naxat Soft did it, but they did.

Any way of opening up the cartridge to take a look and see? Could just be a simple eeprom swap in place of the SMB3 roms, or there may be some wire jumpers involved.

Hmmm... If I recall what he told me correctly, I'm pretty sure an eeprom swap was done, and that one of the only US carts the Recca eeprom would work on was SMB3. He said he converted it to run in "hex-decimal" mode, and that if I ever wanted to revert it to normal all I had to do was open the cart and clip a wire, but I'm not about to do that. I'm too worried that I'd screw up the game.

So, umm....I'm a bit confused...excuse my ignorance, but are you saying you got a famicom cart to work in an NES? What's the big deal? Why the cart swap (how bout an adapter)?

Thanks!

as far as I'm aware, Recca as a famicom cart is a pain in the ass to find. At least, I've never heard a peep on internet auctions.

I can't even find the ROM...yuck. Played that other game, it's got a game editor? Why would you WANT that on a shooter, anyways?

There's a TurboDuo version of the game called (giggle) Alzadick. I had loads of fun writing a review of that one.

when I get home from work, I'll see about hooking you up with the rom...I found it at this obsure website that I'm not sure is still even up.

Just need the name, actually. Is it really just "Recca" ?

Recca: Summer Carnival '92, I think.

the file I found was just entitled "recca.zip", or recca.nes, once unzipped.

Okay, I just tried this game out.

Dire 51, do you think your friend would be willing to email me the chr/prg files of the rom he used so I could burn my own cart?

Mm-mm good.

I think that half the reason he converted SMB3 to run it rather than sending me the actual cart is because the cart is so damned hard to find, even in Japan. Apparently not just any NES cart will run it, either - he had to have either a SMB3 cart or one other one, but I can't remember what the other was.

All I know is that for less than a fraction of the price I would have spent trying to get the actual game, I now have a copy I can play that was relatively pain-free to obtain. He even threw in an instruction manual, guidebook and videotape of it as a nice bonus.

Oh, and I do have the ROM for it, if anyone wants it. PM me if you'd like me to send it to you. For that matter, I've got the Gradius AC hack that I mentioned a while back as well.

Bratwurst - I can't see why not. I'll ask him in my next email.

I tried out Recca as well. That's one seriously impressive shooter. The background of the second stage almost gave me a headache, but it was really fun. A pity that the game came out in 1992,well after any company would bother with a niche NES release.

KF - it's sad, but true...

bratwurst - I've emailed him. Once I get a reply I'll let you know.

Cool. If it's relatively simple enough (and presuming I get the files) I'd be willing to make a couple cart copies to anyone willing to cough up a donor cart and cover shipping both ways. I've already been asked by someone else.

bratwurst - You know, that would probably be quicker then trying to go through my contact. Assuming he can make any more, it would take a minimum of four months to get the shipment in.

Hopefully I'll have those files for you soon. :)

Yes, recca copy carts for everyone :P

The game is friggin intense. I never played anything as manic as it on the snes or genesis. Although Soukyugerentai on saturn is up there...

Souky is one saturn game that I've wanted to play, but haven't had the chance to.

I agree - Recca copy carts for everyone!!! :)

Yeah, Robotron told me to borrow his copy of souky one day, saying it was one of the sweetest shooters he owned. Great difficulty curve on that game, and it's a blast to play.

As for Recca, I never got past level 3. Level 2 is hardcore enough to battle through. They just keep coming!

Dire 51

Recca's just one of those jaw-dropping games... I never believed the NES could run a game that intense without any slowdown. I can barely make it past level 2 sometimes...

So, anything new from bratwurst on his attempt to make a copy cart of recca?

Bratwurst
10-05-2003, 05:57 PM
Nope, I have yet to acquire a copy of SMB3 but I have split the rom into PRG and CHR partitions on my own. So it's pretty much in limbo.
