I'm wondering if either of these is emulated. I've tried Pit Fighter on MAME (.62 I think) and it doesn't work.

I think they might be emulated, but if they are, it's probably only in the most recent versions of MAME.
You can check the list of unemulated games (and reasons why they are unemulated) at http://unmamed.mame.net ... Looks like Pit Fighter is emulated, but the encryption on Guardians of the 'Hood hasn't been cracked yet.

Pit Fighter works. Latest version of Mame is 0.74:

Try the new version and make sure you have the right romset.
BTW: It might be worth noting that Guardian of The Hood is not "officially" emulated in Mame, but I did test in a compile of Mame with the testdrivers uncommented and it did boot and play to an extent.

Thanks for the info. I've read in here that newer versions of MAME might be incompatible with some games that work in older versions -- can I just put the newer version of MAME into a different folder and have it work okay (ie, it won't overwrite the older version of MAME I have). Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, I just wanna makes sure I won't get any conflicts.

If you use the latest Mame v0.74, you will need the Pit Fighter rom that works with that version...that's really all that means. Make a new folder and unzip the new mame inside of it, then get ahold of the newer rom and place it inside the "roms" directory of that folder. Who knows, maybe the rom you have is correct and will work, so maybe you will want to try copying it to the new folder and giving it a try.

Cool, I actually have 3, hopefully 1 of them will work!
It might sound silly asking all these qustions but PF is one of my favorite games and I'm looking forward to actually playing the arcade version again.
