View Full Version : Best video game storyline EVER

Forget your Metal Gear Solids and Final Fantasies... I now own the game that has the best story ever. No game story can possibly top this: you play as Pentarou, a morbidly overweight penguin that can't stop eating, so his girlfriend leaves him for another penguin that wears a top hat and sunglasses. You have to get his ass in shape to win her back! However, the top hat-wearing peguin sends his goons to insure that Pentarou stays fat...

The game? Yume Penguin Monogatari for the Famicom, by Konami. Tell me that is not the best video game storyline of all time.

It's definitely up there, but I'm partial to PaRappa the Rapper.

You're rapping against other rapmasters in order to advance your place in a long line to the bathroom... and the reason you have to go so badly is because you filled up on birthday goodies and then felt, er, sick. :-D But oddly enough, the girl you were busy wooing thinks you look much more manly while you're not feeling well... LOL LOL LOL

And then there are the flying toilets...

Awesome.

I never did see the flying toilets... LOL

There have to be some other storylines that are as fubar as these two. Anyone else?

For serious storyline: SNATCHER.

For hilarious storyline: Super Monkey Ball 2.

Yash - fill me in on Super Monkey Ball 2's story. I have yet to play it or the first one.

Don Bluth totally ripped off this game when he made the Pebble and the Penguin.

I'll have to play Yume Penguin Monogatari for myself, but can it really compare to Blaster Master, Bad Dudes, or Monster Party Games? Or UmJammer Lammy, in which Lammy gorges herself on donuts and gets mistaken for a pregnant teen?

And is just me, or does "Yume Penguin Monogatari" translate as "Dream Penguin Adventure"?

Dire 51

I don't think it compares to Monster Party, no. Hadn't heard about that part in UL either...

Bad Dudes and Blaster Master - hard acts to follow, but I think YPM beats them both.

Snatcher's storyline was one of the best a game could have, it took alot from Bladerunner but still managed to craft its own style, worst story line ever I still say Rastan Saga II for the genesis, there was no story just a boring narrative that I cannot remember, that game should be crushed into a million pieces, then burned, then the ashes should be taken and scattered over the landfill where all the E.T. games are lying and after that is done repeat the process again for good measure :evil laugh:

Dire 51

Good lord, Rastan Saga II wasn't THAT bad. Reserve a fate like that for any games bearing the likeness of N*SYNC, Britney Spears, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen or The Spice Girls... or any of the other numerous truly terrible games that are out there.

Lammy had a great storyline, the whole pregnant teen and them playing a baby like a guitar... I tried that, my nephew just made two loud notes: WWWAAAAHHH and UUUUWWWAAAAAHHH. Dammit, should I get him tuned? That and "Dojo, Casino, it's all in the mind!" It doesn't get much better.

I liked the LUNAR storylines for more serious ones, but what about Incredible Crisis? That was a pretty funny 'line, IMO.

Yes, that sums up SMB2.. hey, wait... Super Monkey ball 2 that is.... definitely a modern AYBABTU or Spooney Bard line right there.

Master Blaster - My god, now THAT is a story line that needs help.

And of the NES/Famicom games were pretty badly hurting for storylines, hell even super mario bros is ludicrous when ya think about it. (A plumber, saving a princessand her living toadstool's from a mutant turtle? yeesh.)

Yume Penguin Monogatari's storyline is awsome. Ever since trying out a rom of that and seeing the plot, I loved the game ever since.

Though I dunno if it can top Blaster Master in terms of absurdity. I mean at least the premise of the Penguin game makes sense. Pentarou is fat, he must lose weight to impress his girlfriend, but the girlfriend's new boyfriend won't stand for that.

In Blaster Master, a boy named Jason's frog jumps into a radioactive box in his backyard, grows huge and falls into a hole. Jason blindly jumps in, and happens to find a tank and use it to kill a bunch of mutants under the Earth, so he can get his frog back, and apparently save the planet or something. Okay. :P

Even as a little kid, when I read about Blaster Master in Nintendo Power, I thought the plot was ridiculous. Though I have to admit, it sure was a memorable storyline, and probably one of the things that helped propell Blaster Master into an immortal Nes classic. The Japanese version Metafight, from what I understand, had a fairly bland storyline.

Mr. Driller's story is bizarre, but just gets surreal when you beat the game.

Colored blocks are coming up through the ground and destroying the city. So you get to the bottom, find the people who are doing it, and Driller tells them to cut it out, and they do. The End.

Beautiful.

Panic for the Sega CD had by far the best video game story line. It was so great, I still can't quite figure it out. Love that game.

What about Night Trap? :D

THAT was a awfully put together game, no doubt about it -- the only things that make that game playable are the fun in short burst gameplay and the nice looking women. :-D

I don't know if I'd rate it the best ever, but theres a pretty good story line that flows through the Colony Wars series on PSX.

I would really like to see a title in this series on one of the new systems, does anyone know of any plans to do one?

Best serious storyline? Sorry - Final Fantasy VIII (PSX) for me.

Best stupid storyline? Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64). LOL

Are you kidding me? FF8 had the stupidest, most rambling-asinine storyline I think I have ever seen (with the exception of maybe the Army of Darkness movie). I quit playing that game once everyone was like "oh wait...we were all orphans together! yeah! and...the evil queen was our nanny!" I was just like "what kind of stupid fool do they take me for? what's that plot twist supposed to be, some kind of dramatic tear-jerker?" It wasn't even as good as Final Fantasy VII, and that had some rambling to it, too. Almost every Final Fantasy has a healthy amount of padding and superficial filler in it to keep you occupied for 25+ hours, but I don't think that their character development and plotline is anything special at all. Don't get me wrong - I still like the games, but their storylines are definitely not their strongpoints. The fact that Square doesn't really understand superb storytelling is probably epitomized in their god-awful movie, which was exactly like one of their games only it wasn't interactive and therefore was boring and stupid. If they had taken that exact same movie plot and turned it into a game people would probably have thought "THIS IS TEH BEST EVAR!!!"

Max Payne had a good plot with some great character development (those dream sequences alone were strokes of genius IMO), but I'd have to give the cake to Deus Ex. Not only did it have a cast of likeable (and hate-able, for that matter) characters, but the plot twists made sense and the storyline was engaging. System Shock 2 was really good as well...StarCraft / WarCraft didn't have bad plots, either.

In fact, there are any number of games whose plots I would put above FF8's - even Zelda: OoT, and the plot in that game was pretty minimal.

Tex Murphy - The Pandora Directive
Tex Murphy - Overseer

Best all out silly storyline:

Under A Killing Moon

Yes, I will defend FF8's story as being a great one.

No, I don't think it's the best FF game (third on my list).

Yes, there are other games that have even better stories (Suikoden II and Star Control II have great ones also).

No, I will NEVER change my mind on FF8. (Need to defend my baby every chance I get!)

Yes, I will shut up now.

Front Mission 3 gets my vote. Not only did it have a great techno mystery story line with political rebellion, subtfuge, and mechs (oh I love the mechs). It also had TWO story lines, that spilt at the very beginning of the game, and both went completely different, yet intertwined.

FF Tactis had a good deep story, even if the end left you very "Uh....Wha?"

Again, any chance I get to mention Bionic Commando for the NES, I will.
This IS one of those times.

Army of Darkness is a cult classic and while it's certainly a must-see for anyone who likes campy movies I certainly wouldn't say that it had a good storyline. The plot is dumb. Nobody watches the movie for the story, we watch it to hear him say:

COME GET SOME
WHO WANTS SOME
HAIL TO THE KING, BABY

Hmmm... I like to think that I watch AoD for a little more than just to hear Bruce say those three lines. I actually enjoyed the story. Then again, that's me.

LOL thats the part that made me stop playing FF8 too that and having to watch 30 mins of materia animation for every fight. Ifirit looked cool the first 30 times you use him but it gets to the point were it just drags on. Plus junctioning sounds cool but would you rather spend 20 mins draining ice magic off of random encounters so you can junction it to your sword, or would you like to just go into town and buy an Ice Sword like in every other FF game.

Still the worst storyline for me would be a tie for Sewer Shark and Corpse Killer.

Best would be FF3 (US release)
