My favorite is Nintendo Power up until about half way through the N64's life span. I'm partial to the Epic Center days when they'd have awesome little articles about Japanese games. Without those articles, I don't think I'd have half the favorite games I have now, and to this day I use them as a buying guide. Last summer I picked up Marvelous for Super Famicom because of the article in Nintendo Power, and man, that's one appropriately titled game.
Everything else I either haven't read or isn't even good enough to wipe my ass with (*looks at the stack of Game Informers that came with the GameStop discount card*). I am very interested in Gamefan, though. I've never read the magazine myself, but when nearly every time someone mentions it they talk about import coverage... that definitely gets my interest. Sooner or later I'm going to get the issue with the Wonder Project J2 article, so maybe I'll pick up a bunch if I like it. ^_^ (I still have plenty of old Nintendo Power issues I'm missing too, though.)

SEGA VISIONS!!!
I used to love that mag! EGM is pretty good, because there is a lot to read. You feel like you got your money's worth. I get GamePro right now(subscription was free), and i deffinately would not pay for it. I can read everything worth reading in like 30 minutes. That's kinda sucky.......too much sony coverage....I. HATE. SONY.

Ha...Sega Visions was pretty good :)
My favorite however is the short lived, Q64....talk about in-depth coverage...this magazine was dedicated to the N64 and it was awesome, but pricey at $9.99 an issue....youch!
Q64 had excellent preview coverage, excellent in-depth strategy guides and they blew away any other magazine in the review department, devoting anywhere from 2-4 full pages to each game, and I thought they were very fair in their reviews. This magazine was very well put together, but you sure did pay for it, make no mistake.

My original favorite was Nintendo Power. When we were young and starting out with out NES, Dad borrowed a cow orker's collection of NP's (This was when they had like.. 10 issues.) and I would read them all through. Even though the only game I really had was SMB2. I remember the first issue. With the clay Mario on it. That was awesome.
Eventually we got a subscription. I remember when it was bi-monthly and every other one was a Players Guide. My fave was the SMB3 guide. That damn guide stuck with me for a while. Then it fell apart. We got a new one at Jamesway really cheap. Because back then, PLAYERS GUIDES DIDN'T COST $15 BUCKS! So it was just a back issue. I kept that issue for years. Had "World" tabs on the pages to jump to the right spot. The cover fell off, but I kept it in tact. It's gone now. Lost or thrown away in the move. Sad. I could still use it. If only for the Card Game cheat. (I would win EVERY TIME with that guide!)
A couple years later, we moved (The first time) and thought we had renewed our subscription. I remember Dad on the phone saying yes. It never came and we forgot about it for about 6 years. Then one day, I asked my Grandmother to buy me a subscription (In the N64 days) to help with my upcoming resurgance of gaming with my N64. So she called, and they said "Well, we have you down as already been a member. And we have a few back issues here at the warehouse that got returned." They asked if they could send them to me... HOLY SHIT. A few weeks later, I received a HUGE box with about 45 issues! All the way up to issue 55. Just the fact they kept them for me makes me happy. I mean, for all they knew, I didn't exist anymore and they could throw them out. But they KEPT them! All 45! I had a LOT of fun getting nostalgic for a while (I'd say it helped map out my future collecting habit and retro phase.) and read every issue. I remember the one with the preview of the Super Mario Bros. Movie. And the gold 50th issue with Zelda: Link's Awakening. As well as the super cool two part Star Tropics maps that I used to their fullest extent back in the day.
I recently resubscribed just to get the Zelda Collectors disc, and wasn't really impressed this time. Maybe it just lost something. Oh well, at least I'll get an in-depth look at the future of Nintendo's systems..
So my other fave is Game Informer. I love the feel of it and the retro section.
I just got GMR yesterday (EB's answer to GS's GI.) and well, it just doesn't not suck. It does suck. I just went through it and nothing appealed to me. My new NP was better. And that's exclusive to Nintendo. So I'd have to say the only mag now I like is GI.

Getting a little bit off-topic here, the Super Mario All-Star player's guide has all the different SMB3 card game variations. It's a very cool and helpful guide in general. I have no idea how much it's going for these days, though.

Easy:
1. Gamefan during Dave Halverson
by far the largest coverage of neo-Geo plus other classic systems
2. Game Players Magazine of Hong Kong
even todau a huge portion of coverage involves 2D and arcade games
3. Game Informers
Thank goodness it's still around
4. Next Generations
I used to like Next Generation when it fist came out, but later one when their views became increasingly biased, I was turned off. IMO, this is the main reason NG went under.

I don't remember at what point I was reading Next Generation, but it SUCKED. Actually... I think it was 2001. I was working at a library, and Next Generation was the only gaming magazine they had, so it was either read that on my breaks or do nothing... :/

Some of my favorite gaming magazines(not in any order)...
-Sega Saturn Magazine, This magazine is awesome! They have great articles, large high quality pics, and the magazine is pretty long too. One of my all time favorites, I just recently started trying to collect them all.
-Nintendo Power, I've always loved this magazine from the NES days, all the way into the N64 era. I still have a subscription, even though they aren't all that good...
-EGM, up until about 1998 they were good.
-SEGA Visions, sure they were biased as hell, but I loved the articles/screenshots and letters. The reviews kinda sucked though.
-GamePro, Yeah, I know this magazine is messed up, but for some reason I still love it.
My favorite magazine was Nintendo Power(until they started putting ads into the magazine, they were great!).

Thinking of british mags, there was one I found in a store once called 64 Magazine for the N64. Holy crap, it was the single greatest onesystem based mag I have ever read. Even if the writing was a bit awkrawd to read and some of the games reviewed were not released here, they had some good (and true) reviews and some other stuff.
I wish I could've suscirbed too :(
I think you're referring to N64 magazine. This was from the same people as the truly superb Super Play (SNES) magazine.
Here in Australia we were lucky in that we get a good mix of US and UK magazines. Alas, compared to the UK ones I found the US ones quite poor
Favourites of mine include:
Zzap! 64 - the greatest games magazine of all time
The Games Machine - a great multi format mag from Newsfield
N64 Magazine - great reviews, fantastic presentation
Super Play - the seminal SNES magazine
Hyper - our home grown Aussie magazine, going for over 10 years now
GamesTM - great mag - there is an Aussie edition of this. If we can get one, I wonder why there is no US version?
I enjoy collecting magazines as much as I do collecting the old games :)

EGM (always) & Gamer's Republic (althought it was only around for a little while, is it still around?)
I dont work at EB anymore, hence no more free game mags.

In no particular order:
1. Game Fan (for the layouts, and bucketfuls of screenshots)
2. Next-Generation (only for the interviews...the rest was....ugh)
3. Old days of EGM
4. Tips and Tricks (Collector's Section...used to be to see if my fanzine was featured LOL )
Lately I just can't read anything (aside from T & T)...they all look alike and don't have the same...'vibe' I guess that I used to get back in the day.
Oh, and Kid Fenris...your avatar is *awesome* :D
Game informer is one of my favorites,
but tips and tricks has the collectors closet section, and that is like a bible for me.

I'd probably have to say that EGM would be my favorite, although it has gone downhill alot since the new layout. Oh well

I remember that first NP issue. My Dad borrowed it and some games from a cow-orker back when we got our NES so we could play them. I loved that SMB2 review. The maps helped a lot. I didn't get a subscription for a year or two.

The best mainstream mag out there has to be Game Informer, hands down. Unlike EGM, they haven't fully abandoned the retro gaming community in favor of the current systems. Sure, probably 80% of the magazine is current stuff, but the other 20% is the sweet retro-gaming bliss I crave. In one of my favorite articles they had kids today play old-school games like Q-bert, Pong, and E.T.. Great stuff...great stuff.

Why all the hate to Next Gen!?
They even dedicated a issue to hush up all the "You guys are baised to Nintendo" talk. I found it to be one of the most intellectual, none baised, most acurate review magazines out there, as well as my best friend.
If it wasn't that Magazine I was reading it would be Game Fan, Game Pro (The early 90's) and now I just stick with EGM. Nintendo Power only made me want it when they had specials such as the Super Metroid guide. I wish I had that one and the Lttp one.
I'm thinking of getting this new mag called Gamers, It looked pretty good from what I saw.

There are so many of these magazines now, so i will try my best:
1. EGM - love the way it covers all of the major systems of the time.
2. Game Informer - same reason as above, just not as much info.
3. Nintendo Power, Have been getting it since I was about 9 years old and still love it.

As far as classic magazines go, it was Gamefan followed very closely by Next Gen.
For modern, a tie between Hardcore Gamer and Play, with the Official US Playstation Magazine in 2nd place. Hey, I like the monthly demos. LOL

1. Nintendo Power - the original issues ranging from NES to N64
2. Gamepro - Once again, talking about the retro covered issues.
3. EGM - Retro retro retro.
Guess you know what kind of a gamer I am...as if many of you weren't.

The first 50 or 60 issues of Nintendo Power are still my favorite, though I am also partial to the early years of Electronic Gaming Monthly. GameFan gets an honorable mention.
Nintendo Power is sooo crappy. Same with Hardcore Gamer Magazine. They don't seem so hardcore and they really don't offer much more than other mags or websites. They suck suck suck. I really want them to go under.
You want a classic magazine? Gamefan (Halverson and ECM years)
You want magazineS that are passable today? Play and Gamepro.
Gamepro used to be such shit. They've really improved. That said, no current mag compares to Gamefan in any era. Believe it!

my favorite is nintendo power (the first fifty or sixty issues only though) but to be honest it's like the only one I've actaully ever READ.
