View Full Version : Genesis systems....Virtually worthless for re-sale?

I can't tell you how many times I walk into a thrift and see a Sega Genesis. Usually a really dusty model 1, but sometimes a equally dusty model 2 genny. No controllers, no video cable, no power adapter. Just the bare system itself.

Yet, it's priced at only $2.99. I think to myself, "Damn, $2.99 is pretty low, but quite honestly, I can't make any money off of this."

In fact, I think that a Model 1 Genesis power adapter is more valueable than a Model 1 genesis with a controller and RF Switch. At least a Genesis Model 1 AC adapter will work on a TurboGrafx-16 and a Atari Jaguar and a Sega CD. That gives it some value. People sell Turbo 16 and Jag power adapters for 6 or 7 or 8 bucks on Ebay.

But a Genny on Ebay gets next to nothing.

It's kinda weird, because a Super Nintendo still has some decent value, and old NES systems (if they work) have some pretty decent value, but old Genny's are basically worthless.

And I don't know how many times I've walked into a thrift store and seen old Genesis for $29.99.
Old crappy , dusty beat up Genny.
I would love to just grab them and smash them on the floor. :D

By the way I have 7 or 8 complete Genesis for sale for $25.00 shipped if anybody needs one. :embarrassed:

The real question is why you never see any SNES systems priced at $2.99 at thrifts. Weren't there as many SNES systems sold as Genesis's? If so, wouldn't it make sense that you'd see just as many Super Nintendos in the thrifts? I probably see 1 Super Nintendo for every 15-20 Genesis systems I see.

Every thrift store around here holds on the the snes systems and cords, etc until they have complete systems. Then they sell them for $29.99-39.99.

Your right... there are many more Gennys for sale that SNES systems, yet the SNES outsold the Genny. Perhaps it's because the Genesis was a big sports sytem while the SNES was not? Sports gamers upgraded to something else and left the Genesis behind, while SNEs gamers have held onto their systems.

If you go with what you saw during those days, I knew 5x the amount of people with a Genesis than I did with an SNES. I wonder where all of those SNES consoles were actually sold, because it wasn't to people I knew.

With all this talk of eBay and video games, I thought ... boy, what better hobby for me than to start picking up used games/systems from this area, keep what I don't have and sell the rest on eBay?

HAH!

The first thrift store I went to had a Sega Genesis system for $6.99. It had the power cord but no video cable that I could see. It came with one controller, and let me tell you, it looks like the black housing around the cord was 3 feet long and the wires inside were about 3 feet 2 inches long, because in between the controller and the black wrap was about two inches of multi-colored wires ... it looked a lot like C3P0's belly area. There was a controller in better shape, but it was priced separately for $2.99.

Under the glass case up front they had about ten Sega Saturn games and three Sega Genesis games, all boxed. I remember on the Genesis they had Outrun and Shinobi -- they were $5 each. The Sega Saturn games were $7 each. I don't remember the titles but I remember a couple of sports titles and nothing jumped out and grabbed me.

Maybe I'll have better luck at some garage sales or flea markets or something. It seems like the thrift stores around here have eBay fever.

That's been my experience as well. It makes you wonder about Nintendo's sales #'s they claim for the SNES. I don't see used SNES systems or carts anywhere as often as Genesis stuff. I didn't own a SNES, didn't know anyone who did.

If you want to collect for a system though, genesis is great. You can find the games very easily and at prices that are normally quite low, plus there are tons of great games for it! These systems WILL become popular again with the next age group of retrogamers, it is just a matter of having the patience to wait 5 to 10 years O_O .

I have lots of genesis systems too but I really don't care, didn't pay much for em.

Later..................

Hey Daryll, nice machines. I got one last month and it's become the hit of the house. Even my 2 year old loves pumping quarters into it.

I have been winning quite a few Genesis's myself lately. hell, if you can get a Genesis system WITH 3 games for the same price as those 3 games by themself..might as well pick it up!

Awesome...

I was bidding on a machine like yours once..I got outbid..but,Since I'm a Neo Geo fanatic the NEO caught my eye..

This would be a nice companion for the Samurai Spirits..
Thanks for posting a picture of your awesome machine..I may start looking for one like yours soon....I can never have enough..I like the NEO on it..

I must have two of everything I own but I have that now..
So,If I bought one like yours to go with the SS then I would have to get something to go with the Taco Slot...eeeewhh My wife would kill me..

Do you know what the NEO means on your machine?

(((This is a letter I wrote to a friend.....below)))

Me and the wife sat in front of the slot machines tonight and played together..I put them next to each other now...

I changed the room around a little to do this by adding another shelf.

It was cool..We both started off with $50.00 worth of tokens and she won $120.00 worth of tokens..So she would of been up $70.00 at a Casino(As we are reenacting)..I didn't hit nothing..I lost $50.00..I hit a few bonus rounds, but no winning payout.
Then she takes $20.00 of her tokens and plays my machine..She hits for $30.00 right after I stopped/lost..lol..
I have no luck with gambling but she does..
I could buy 10 scratch offs and not win on any..but she would hit on at least 4.
I have to say, playing the slot machines with your wife is a nice way to spend time together..we have a lot of fun doing that.

Every time I see Gennys, I see a glut of sports titles and Sonic games. Every time. But the Genny games always sell faster.

SNES games were more varied, or maybe it's just the fact that the SNES didn't live off of Mario titles or sports games.

Funco used to always have Genny systems, but fewer SNES. Now, we have more SNES than Genny.

Do you know what the NEO means on your machine?

I have no idea. The machine was a gift from my dad for my 30th birthday to go in my home arcade that my wife put together for the same day. There is a guy who sells them locally here out of his house. I know the machine cost between $250-$300 US.

My dad picked the "NEO" one because he's a Matrix fan and liked the name. It fits in well with a NEO GEO theme though also. :)

I don't know about your machine, but mine is kind of strange. Basically, it's almost impossible to get a high pay out unless you hit a triple something. The highest payout you can get without a triple anything is 15 tokens. If you hit the triple, it turns into a bonus game, and pays out on every spin for the next 3-5 minutes in some sort of "bonus" game. Also a lot of times I will get a "score", but it doesn't pay out on it so ... the instructions are in Japanese so I'm not sure I have to whole idea of the machine yet, but it's still a lot of fun to play.

thats pretty normal Jap Slots play, since it's more like a pachinko game than an american slot machine. Odds are not even close to american, they have to pay out big. It's not gambling really but a skill thing since most reels you can stop yourself.

I really ment to bring that Rockman slot to Sean kellys, I forgot all about it.

Thanks for the info on the game ...

And, the baggie contains ten bucks in tokens. I guess it's illegal to sell them where they accept quarters. My dad said the guy said it was simple to change it to accept quarters, but apparently he didn't tell him how. I'd love to change it to take quarters. Then I can finally make some money off of my scumbag friends.

Haha! Now *I* am the scumbag, you scumbags!

Neo-Geo -------- New Earth, that's what it means.

Back to the original topic, my buddy managed a game store back in around 95-96, the end of 16-bit era, the mainstream gamers with bucket of sports games (you guessed it, Genesis owner), dumped their systems and went right into PSX, he even saw many Genesis owners sold the system and switched to SNES because they want to play more RPGs, RPG games keep gamers around much longer. It was a time when you couldn't even give away your Genny, yet SNES was pretty much sought after.

It's safe to say that people with SNES kept the systems (more variety of genre) and yet for many Genesis gamers they just sold their system and moved on. Many believed it was one of the mistakes Sega made during 16-bit era, lack of RPG and shooters toward the ladder part of Genesis life cycle.

Take out the Genesis motherboards and put them into something else and they'll sell as novelty items.

I got a Super Nintendo at a thrift for $4.00 once. It was just the console itself, no power, controller or anything. I think I got it at a Goodwill for 4 bucks.

By the way, it seems that the Goodwill near me sells all their video game systems for $4.00 regardless of what they are. They always have Genny's there for 4 bucks too. Once, I walked in, and I saw a lady looking at a Saturn. It had two controllers, and the power cable too. I asked her how much they were charging for it, and she said 4 bucks. I was hoping that she would put it down and I would snag it, but she put it in her cart and bought it.

Damnit!

I hoping to go into my Goodwill and see a Neo-Geo for 4 bucks! Yeah right.
