View Full Version : A couple of 3DO questions...

I just got a 3DO, I had one, a long time ago, but this is the first time I've played one in like 9 years or so.

Question #1: If I'm playing one game, and I want to switch to another game, do I turn off the 3DO, then turn it back on, and eject, or do I just eject the current game and put the other game in?

Question #2: How much should one have to pay for a 3DO and two controllers? Ballpark of course.

Question #3: The 3DO controller plugs look kinda like a Genesis plug, but I'm assuming that they are different. You can't use a Genesis extension cord with a 3DO controller can you?

Thanks for any replies on this.

Eject the current game, put in a new one, then close the drive door and reset the machine.

You'll find them for anywhere from $20 (that's how much mine cost) to $80. Expect an average price of $40-$50. I found a 3DO at a video game store for fifty smackers, and that store usually overcharges for everything. The more honest price indicates that there's just not much interest in 3DO collecting.

Question #3: The 3DO controller plugs look kinda like a Genesis plug, but I'm assuming that they are different. You can't use a Genesis extension cord with a 3DO controller can you?

I wouldn't try it if I were you. The ports are the same, but they're wired differently. Plugging a Genesis accessory into a 3DO controller port is asking for trouble.

This I don't get, the extension cords are supposed to be just straight-through cables.

1. Just eject the game and put the new one in...the machine auto resets.

2. no idea!

3. I have used a generic atari/sega type joypad extension lead with my FZ1 with absoluteluy no problems....I cant see how it would hurt.

Yeah, straight through if the pinout is the same. If it's not the same you're looking at components possibly wired to things they're not supposed to be wired to...

It shouldn't matter though, if the 3DO is wired differently than the Genesis port. A straight-through is simply extending the original port's length, it's no different than using a DB9 pc cable.

There's also no reason for the Genny extension cord to be wired anything but straight through as it would interfere with the Genesis itself to begin with.

That's right, it is straight through. It could be wiring ground straight through to an open circuit. It could be wiring the d pad left up to the fire button. It could be wiring the start button to some pin unused by 3do controllers but wired for a test unit to reset the unit.

I have the following 3DO set-up for sale or trade if anyone wants to make an offer. This is some HEAVY stuff, so you may want to think about picking it up... I live in the Triad area of North Carolina.

TWO 3DO consoles, one top-loading, one front-loading, several controllers, and a convertor to use Super Nintendo controllers

EDIT list of 24 burned games mostly imports have been removed by me after someone got their panties in a wad because I posted them elsewhere. SORRY. my pitiful opinion is that long dead and abandoned systems (especially the 3DO) tow the line and burned games could possibly be acceptable in some forums. I see I was WRONG.

OHHH... RAINBOWS... We were talking about separate things. He was talking about extending out a 3do controller to a 3do with a genesis cable... I was talking about the genesis controller scenario.
