View Full Version : Sega CDX questions

I see those ingenious fellows over at Service Games have come up with what you might call a "nice piece of kit" with this one-and-a-half pound Sega CDX. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find out much about it besides the usual mindless marketing blurb at some reseller. So here are my questions:
a.) Is there a Japanese variant to play Mega Drive games? Or would the WonderMega be a better bet?
b.) Is a 32x built in, and can you put one on the CDX if not? (I'm thinking no and yes respectively but that's just a guess)
c.) Have you had any luck finding them?
d.) Is it really worth purchasing?
Thanks, and I'm glad to be back after my short trip out to California (Orange, south-east of Los Angeles).

I'm happy to say I own a Sega CDX. I can tell you it doesn't play 32X games and will not work even with the 32X itself. Not sure about the mega drive compatability. I found mine at a local pawn shop and picked it up (Mint in box) for 20 dollars. It was truely a steal.

I have a US CDX, and I use a Mega Key to play Euro and Jp imports on it.

No built in 32X and I'm TOLD you can't play it on the CDX, but I haven't tried yet.

I've found one in the wild and traded for one, both in the last 5 years. ON top of those, I've seen 2 others in the wild for more than I was willing to pay. Not easy to come by!

Think I'll try to get one with the box somehow, looks like a nice piece. A shame about the 32x bit, since you can't use it on the Genesis 3 either (if I'm not forgetting what was posted about that earlier) and that leaves me looking at the older and uglier Genesis variations.

The 32X works with the CDX. Many people, including myself, have confirmed this.

Do you have this setup working right now? (i.e. this isn't a vague memory) Sorry to question but I have to be completely sure.

As the answer will prove to be a "yes," where could I go about buying a CDX and/or a Sega 32x online? Or is anybody here looking to offload one of those?

Proud CDX owner here too. Is there a certain CDX that can and cannot play mega Drive games like with Dreamcasts made after a certain date?

Yes, the 32x works with the CDX - with one caveat. Check out the pic.

Note the gap between the 32x and the CDX - it works but it's a little unstable. Sega never released the brace for the 32x-CDX combo because of some issue with not having FCC approval for the use of the 32x on the CDX if I recall correctly

Well, I dont' have it working right now, but I used it that way for several months (now it's part of my Gen2/Sega CD2/32X tower o' power). Unless the physics of the universe have changed, it should still work. The 32X manual even has a section on hooking it up to the CDX.
You can also use a Power Base Converter with the CDX, and it looks even sillier.

Sweet. Elaboration, I like elaboration. I don't really like silly looking systems, but hey :D
I could use a Power Base Converter now anyhow.

I've seen like, 3 CDXs in the past year. 2 were bought by various friends, and 1 I bought myself.
God bless the Gibralter Trade Center :wired:
I think it looks sweet with the power base convertor in it. Oh and one thing I heard on the 32x in it, is that the cd part won't run with the 32X attached. I can't verify, having no 32X, but thats what I've heard.

Lies, all lies!!!!!!!
Try as you all may, you can't stop the mighty CDX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, you too can play all of those wonderous CD/32X titles. Titles such as Corpse Killer, Slam City (featuring Scottie Pippin), Supreme Warrior, and the new 32X enhanced version of the best-selling Night Trap!
