View Full Version : Handheld Vectrex?

The Vectrex almost made a comeback in 1988, when Smith Engineering considered resurrecting the Vectrex as a handheld unit. Milton Bradley thought the $100+ price tag of the unit would make it unsellable, so the idea was scrapped. A year later Nintendo's Game Boy was released and enjoyed and became a huge success, but the handheld Vectrex concept was never tried again.

Does anyone have any idea what they planned to use as a display for this? Any mockups/sketches of this exist?

that would have been really cool but how the hell would they have fit the monitor tube into a handheld?

It probably would have been LCD....unless they figured out how to make tiny vector displays really cheap.

I guess you could always ask Mike Cartiabiano, he MIGHT know. I think his E-mail is on the Sennari website somewhere.

Maybe they were going to make it like a smaller, battery operated tabletop unit like a Coleco arcade or Red Zone tabletop.

Isn't that almost what an actual Vectrex is?

No, it's too big and heavy and there's no way you can run it off batteries(30 D cells?). I'm thinking something 1/3 the size and 1/4 the weight. Like a Red Zone or Coleco arcade tabletop.

Ummm, it's something that you are going to give me for my birthday...

It looks like it has the same port as the regular Vectrex joystick

It looks like a Vectrex controller that someone built into a handwarmer, glasses case, or an old remote control.

Does the bottom of it open up? What's the little button/latch looking thing?
