Just wondering with the PC version being close to release if anyone here was planing on playing the Final Fantasy MMORPG?

Personaly I think the idea looks kind of nice. haveing a high level Dragoon with your own Chocobo and Air Ship would be pretty cool. What do you think?

I think that it might have just enough edge and fanboy base to bump EQ from #1. Simply based on the fact that it's already had extensive play across the ocean and they've had plenty of time to work out all the launch bug issues, so it should be stable right off the bat.

I probably won't be playing it though, which is unfortunate. Still angry that it's FFXI and not FFOnline.

I'll have to find out more about it, though I don't think I'll actually buy the game. I've never been a fan of that particular style of RPG (which is fine, since I don't feel the two styles of RPGs are much related anyway). I might try it out at a friend's house or something though.

I have one major/minor (depending on you) complaint about the game... The name Final Fantasy XI Online. I think they should have just named it Final Fantasy Online. They didn't call Final Fantasy Tactics Final Fantasy VIII Tactics, did they? I have no problem with a spin-off, but I think they should have separated it from the series more. Now I'll always feel there's an empty spot on my shelf and be forced by guilt into buying at least a used copy. Wait.... You don't have to pay to play, do you?

I am not going to play, because i want a single player RPG for Final Fantasy anyway. I think that there wont be much story, and chatting with other people will just ruin it.
Ill try it, but i probably wont like it.

I think square is going to charge something to play... one more reason not to play.

Well, then what the hell are we supposed to do with it 10 years from now when it's not supported. I could handle losing an EverQuest or something (since I don't play it, heh-heh), but not being able to enjoy a volume of a Final Fantasy game years later? Horse-shiot!

Very good point. We might as well burn it in about 3 years, because it will be worthless. Man square better make a good FFX-2...

That's pretty much my opinion, except I won't be trying it. I don't particularly enjoy online gaming and the last thing I want to start playing a life-sucking MMORPG. :) I'll wait for FFX-2 instead. Or maybe play through one of the older FF games instead.

I haven't played a Final Fantasy since Mystic quest for the Snes. Not really an interest to me.

Makes me wonder if it'll be easy to find used or hard to find used (once it's no longer supported).

I'm still not interested in forking out $$$ to play online. I'm online all day at work. And I don't have tonnes of time to play my offline games. So spending money on broadband, then the game, then the 'fee' - well it probably won't ever make sense to me (until I have children that start playing themselves perhaps - in 10 years).

But I'll pick up a copy of the game at some point anyway. Because, as has been mentioned, I don't want that "gap" in my FF collection. I've got everything so far - I'll just buy it used instead of new this time around.

What would be really interesting is if they were to release a server-version of FF Online and sold it for like $150 or so and people could run their own FF XI servers once Square stopped supporting it.

I don't know about it overtaking EverQuest, though. EQ hits a sweet spot for addictive personalities; FFXI has to make it like crack to really get the same numbers.

I'm guessing it will be easy to find use in about a year after it releases. It will be easy because most people will grow tired of it after a while, (except the fanboys who get hooked to it) because it will grow repetitive. I know square is going full out and having stories branch out and crap like that, but how many people will want to keep paying 5-10 bucks a month to see a branching story? I think it will be at $20 soon if square decides to charge to play...

Square has announced pay to play, and it wasn't cheap if I remember correctly. On top of that, I haven't liked an FF game (excluding Tactics) since FF6, so I wouldn't even consider playing it, even if it were free. Bleah @ Square...unless more Enixy games make it here!

Oh come on guys, you act like pay to play is new or something. There is absolutely no way they can run the sheer mind bogling numbers of bandwidth that a mmorpg for free, even if they sold the game like all hell at $50 a pop. When the sales go down and people still want to play, they NEED revenue.

I would personally love to see the numbers EQ does, or did during it's absolute peak (it has to be in it's downfall... right?). Just thinking about all of the serverside info, how often it's requested and all the clientside info that is in constant connection with the server. Everything is stored serverside in terms of your character, but everything still has to be displayed clientside, not to mention cheat protection.

People have been saying that for years now. I remember people on message boards saying that AC was going to bring down Everquest. On the other hand at least half of EQ's player base seems to just be waiting for the next big thing to come along. Something that was the big jump like EQ was to UO.

Plus I don't know how this game will sell to PC owners. The FF PC games never sold as well as the PSX ones did. There seems to be big difference in what is expected in PC RPG's and consoles.

Console games like the FF games are usualy linear stories with a begining the story (sometimes you can choose some of the order but you still have to go from point A to point B before you can do point C) and an end

PC RPG's (a good example is Fallout) have a Begining and sometimes a story thrown in that you can choose to take part in, but for the most part you have a lot more choice in what you do and how you play the story. If you choose to be the hero and save the day, or plauge on mankind and right and still win the game.

They Idea of a FF MMORPG sounds cool to me. I've always thought that the FF class job system was one of there better one's they had. It also seems like a good choice for a MMORPG.

So you think people may eventually try to sell their items on ebay like they have with EQ?

I'm definitely not going to get FF XI. I'll sit it out and go for X-2 instead (and maybe Crystal Chronicles if its single player version is worth it). You see, if FF XI even had a partial single-player campaign (like for Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast), then maybe I'd consider it. But online only and fee-based on top of it? No. I'm just not an online gamer. I don't mind playing long-distance against friends I know, but not against just anyone. That's just the way I am. Besides, with a dozen FF games to play (if i include the 2 Tactics titles), I have plenty to keep me busy for a while.

I'm pretty sure they will unless Squaresoft makes Ebay stop. It's happened on almost every online game out there. Just look at diablo :o. Plus even when when the online companies stop them on Ebay third party sites will pop up to sell items/money on.

A website that sells EQ money for real money owns the Monk community message boards.
