$719 for the PSX. Ouch! X_x To be fair it's more than just a game console. It's got a satellite TV tuner, DVD recorder and an HDD recorder that can record over 200 hours of video. So you you could replace about $500 to $1000 worth of equipment with this one system.

It's due out in Japan at the end of the year. No word on when it'll debut in the states. Probably not until late 2004 at the earliest.

Can you say Laseractive? I knew you could.

It's really more like a 3DO since there's nothing modular about this PSX at all. If it had plug-in devices that let me play Xbox and GameCube games, it would be like Laseractive and therefore I would buy it.

Who am I kidding... I'd probably buy it anyway.

I've been in need of a PS2 so I'll probably buy it.

Hopefully by the time this is out ALL bugs will be out of the Playstation 2, and the price will be significantly less than now! I will buy a PS2 then, but not a PSX

On the other hand, I might not have the MONEY to buy this..thing. Should save that for more good games instead. :P

I'll get one eventually, when the price is right. Maybe get a PS2 cheap before then.

That's a decent point, but you have to figure it's a bit apples and oranges. The LA is a media player that can also play games... the PSX is a game player that also has media capabilities. I still can't figure out how they're going to produce a DVR with DVDR capability without getting sued into oblivion by hollywood.

Does anyone know what DVR software is running on this sucker? Is it proprietary or did they license Tivo? Is it running an OS underneath? A DVR app is pretty intensive to stand completely alone...

Honestly, if I DIDN'T already have a Tivo, HDTV Tuner, and a PS2, I WOULD buy one of these.... It's about the same price, Of course, I DO have all of them, so <shrug>

The title of this thread threw me for a loop, I had a throwback remembering when PSX was the original shorthand for Playstation @_@ ....this thing is cool as heck though, if I was interested in new stuff, I'd think about picking this up...

I don't like those modular things ... I'm always afraid one part of it will break and I'll either end up keeping something that's broken, or throwing away something that's mostly working.

Er, you mean non-modular. If it was modular you could throw away a faulty part and replace that with a new one while keeping everything else.

The only real reason I got a PS2 was because there were *so* many games for the PS1 that I never got because I never had a PS1. I played FF7 on the PC and realized that I was probably missing out on a lot...so when the price came down to $200 I bit the bullet and got one.

I've been fairly disappointed. There really aren't THAT many PS2 games I've played and really enjoyed. I've gotten all the PS1 games I had my eyes on (FF Tactics, Castlevania: SotN, Chrono Cross...ok so maybe the whole Greatest Hits line heh) and I enjoy those - but is there really any game that required going out and getting a PS2 instead of a PS1? There is a substantial amount of crap. Even games that everyone raves about like ICO...I just didn't think that game was all that.

That being said there's no way I'm getting a PSX. I enjoy my GameCube far more at this point.

Lets see, Playstation 1-2 + failure rate x multiple hardware = More chance of failure.

I think i'll wait and see some feedback on this product, even then i've never been too into the whole everything in one box idea, especially if it's by Sony. I've never had a Sony product that didn't fail before it should have, and that's just their single devices

D'oh, you're right.

In a weird coincidence, I just talked to my sister tonight and she said the DVD player went out on her DVD/VCR/TV combo box. I took it as a sign.

At $720, what market are they targeting?

I'd much rather see a "media center". Cram a PS2 in a big box like that, give it a network connection, an MP3 player, an MPG player, a TIVO and a DVD-R drive.

why has sony moved onto the next challenge while the ps2 is what i would call.......unattended maybe. the ps2 is still junk, and tacking a $700 price tag on a new system......when the old system has yet to work just right. everybody talks about nintendo sinking. and well......

Nintendo has loyal fans, Like I......they have some really silly sales tactics, but i still love them....i can't help it
Microsoft......you all know about microsoft, if xbox ever really catches on, it's over LOL
Sony.......this may be the nail in their coffin. not to say they'll go under, but it may offer Nintendo the edge they need to creep back into the market(they're in but they're not in)

I've already read somebody's post that said, it's not a matter of what nintendo does....it's a matter of waiting until the competition screws up. well here it is, yes a nice piece of equipment.....but.....unless it hits $200 i'm not buying one. sorry :D

and that goes for all game systems. all this talk about the N-gage.......$299......are you kiddin me, you gotta be fu%*&n crazy. game systems go at $200 right now, some day $300. but a handheld won't fly for $300 when you don't have a prior system backing it. i'm going to stop typing because i think it's best.

EDIT: i bought a ps2 exclusively to put in my car and use as a DVD player....i figured it would go nice. and.....another opinion. i think the dvd player on the ps2......totally sucks. it's so slow on scanning......try fast forwarding and when you press play or pause or anything like that......it's delayed and that really burns me. so if the DVD player sucks on ps2 why wouldn't all these built in features suck on the psx. as the spokeswoman said for pioneer......features.

all i can say......i think this is nintendo's shot back into business as usual.....or getting there.
