View Full Version : Game box/insert scanning initiative

I bought a nice, nice new scanner today; a HP Scanjet 5500c. Did I mention it's nice? Anyhow, I've got a number of things I want to scan. The lid moves up and down so I can scan stuff like books or boxes yet I'm putting off box scans for the moment in fear of crushing them with the heavy lid.

What I have done so far are scan two Mega Drive inserts, check 'em out:

http://home.comcast.net/~edoscuro/mdeur_revenge.jpg
(resolution lowered so it just about fits in 1024 vertical resolution; if you've got higher than that you can see it all at once--any smaller and the wrords get blurry) ~299Kbytes

http://home.comcast.net/~edoscuro/mdj_contrahc.jpg
(same resolution but messed up on the file size optimization b/c of fiddling with colors, so it's a larger file) ~359Kbytes

Other things that are more or less immediate projects:

The Cyber Shinobi (insert scan)
Shinobi (PC-Engine manual (jewel case front image) scan, back scan, game card scan
Streets of Rage Mega Drive (insert scan)
Shinobi PS2 sealed box scan
assorted Akumajo Dracula x68000 box scans (front, back, manual stuff, 5 1/4" game disks)

Other stuff to figure out later.

If anybody has something they need a scan of within the next day or so that's in my collection, take a look at my page and lemme know.

The only problem with scanning things like boxes under the lid, is you dont get that nice white border. It will come out looking grey, due to the absence of the high light source around it.

In these circumstances, I open the lid of my Epson 2450 (did I mention it scans medium and large format 4x5 negatives? :P ) at night when the lights are off in my room and scan things that way. So, instead of the nasty grey-uneven border around the object, I get a nice 100% black one.

I get a white border because there's a white backing to most of the lid. I cropped out just about all the border but you can see what's there is white.

I know

Putting something flat on the scanner (the insert, not the box itself) will give you that white border.

But I'm saying, if you put boxes on the scanner, and left the 3/4 inch or so gap that the box creates between the bed and the lid, you would get a grey border, because the white cannot carry that far when the light source/distance has changed. Unless you cut a mask to fit around that box or you compress the box, you'll get it.

blah...not reading enough. Yes, I had assumed that would be the case and I'll be able to deal with it easily. Photoshop 7.0 and I have many tricks up our collective digital sleeves. Thanks for the thought, though.

While we're on the subject, any idea what happened to Replacementdocs.com (http://www.replacementdocs.com)? They seem to be down presently. (I really should upload that Metroid manual scan I made so long ago.)

I wish I had more opened game boxes so I could scan manuals :D

Anyhow, The Cyber Shinobi is next. Interesting cover art on that one, though it doesn't seem to fit the game (especially the hairdo)...

Rather less spectacular: box for the Zelda no Densetsu cartridge rerelease in 1993. I'm working on the map part, that will be a challenge to put together as the scanner bed isn't big enough to fit the whole thing on when it's unfolded.

Old topic, but worth keeping this all together.

The Cyber Shinobi, European PAL box insert. This is quite possibly the best part of the game...attractive cover (though Joe here looks quite odd). Screenshots are even clearer on the actual; I've cropped this one down so that detail is lost somewhat. Note the huge, HUGE status bar in the screenshots...

I'll hopefully get ahold of them someday, and the day I do I'll have a scan.

@ Autobot:

I can't even figure out how to use the system; after searching I get a scrollable list with stuff on it like "German 1977." What the heck? LOTS of clutter and an instant "Would you like to load-downn our wonderful spyware" are also bad.

I like The Arcade Flyers Archive (TAFA, sounds professional ;) much better. Though it only does arcade flyers, it does what it set out to quite well.

Does anyone have a nice 300 dpi scan (or maybe know where there's one online - I couldn't find them at the links above) of the following:

GENESIS:
Lemmings (box insert)

SATURN:
Doom (back tray card - full with spines)
Sky Target (back tray card - full with spines)

Whoa! Back from the dead. Unfortunately I don't know where to find those exact titles, but I can offer you:

Location of a scan of the Atari Jaguar DOOM's box
Scan of the CD-i case for Lemmings

That's all I can do, unfortunately :/

Thanks for the link! Unfortunately, they don't have the art for either of the games I'm looking for, so if anyone knows where I could track them down, please post. :)
