I fixed the links in the basement arcade, slightly adjusted the upstairs game room, added a page just for SMS stuff (quite sloppy right now, but who cares), and if you look around other parts of the site, you might notice I've got the Flinstones' Winston Cigarettes commercial available to download once again!

Raccoon Lad's Website of somewhat hard to navigate FUN!

I second his motion to draw attention to his site! I enjoyed my visit there a whlie back and I'll bookmark it this time! RL has some nice art at his site and plenty of interesting stuff (more than I've ever been able to get up on a site).

Other interesting sites by members here (that I've been to):

Oobgarm's site
Phosphor Dot Fossil's site
Digitalpress' site (obviously :D)
and for some reason Bratwurst's "swapping crap" link in his sig cracks me up :D.

edit: whoops! Forgot Achika's site, which has lots of good info on it!

OMG, the arcade/SMS/NES comparisons are TEH BAD.

Most of those are pirate ports, and Tengen ports of Sega games suck by default.

Smash TV looks better on the Nintendo.

Ms. Pac Man is more arcade acurate.

Rygar NES is ten times better than any other Rygar game out there including the PS2 version even if I have yet to play that one.

Nintendo is my king supreme, but the only thing it never trumped in the 8-bit 'war' was the existance of Wonderboy III, best video game in the history of mankind. If they had only made more games in that vein I would care about the Master System a whole lot more.

Personally I always prefered the aesthetics of the NES due to the nature of its limitations. Take a look at games like Kickmaster or Little Samson and they pulled off some incredible textures just for the sake of high-contrast colors and 16 colors total per screen or some such. With SMS games you get a lot of solid, pastel colors filling up large areas where the graphic artists seemed to get lazy. On the other hand Global Defense was a beautiful romp and the Nintendo has a bad crap to good ratio.

The SMS vs NES page is awesome! The one on www.segamastersystem.com is one of my favorite places, but yours puts it to shame. Have you considered Ninja Gaiden snapshots? I know they're not the exact same game, but any further evidence to put the SMS in its rightful place. Rampart comes to mind, Strider, I cant think of any others right off the top of my head now. Dont limit yourself to the arcade when showing off the SMS's power!

Alien Syndrome has nicer graphics on the SMS, but otherwise I thought the SMS version blew. The Nes one (Which was by Sunsoft, not Tengen) was actually more faithful to the arcade game.

Raccoon Lad - GREAT comparison page! Have you considered doing another one in the future that focuses on other titles for both systems?

A couple of other suggestions for the current page:

Strider
Wonder Boy/Adventure island (don't forget, WB was an arcade game)

Balloon Fight

No, I'm still working on it. ( I wrote that "nearly finished" thing yesterday)

As for Buster Douglas KO boxing, my copy should be arriving in the mail in a few days.... from FRANCE no less! Thanks To Bock from SMS Power whom I had to trade a bunch of stuff with to get this game. I'll kinda miss my rare Blue label Double Dragon, but it's going to a collector who'll appreciate it more than I ever could.

Well, the SMS vs. NES debate is academic as far as graphics go, and the comparison doesn't do much more than illustrate what most of us already knew: the SMS was more powerful than the NES.

Of course, the Master System's array of solid arcade ports doesn't seem terribly relevant today, as most of them are available in superior or perfect form on consoles with better libraries. Why bother with the Master System's take on Strider, Forgotten Worlds, or Altered Beast when the Genesis versions are closer to the arcade and easier to come by?

And as Bratwurst has noted, the NES translations of arcade games often improved on their source material. Rygar was a repetitive action/platformer in the arcades, but an excellent action/RPG on the NES. Ninja Gaiden was a mediocre beat-'em-up in the arcades (and a mediocre action game on the SMS), while it became an awesome trilogy on the NES. Bionic Commando's arcade originator was lousy, but the NES game is among the system's best games. Even the somewhat choppy NES remake of Strider is deeper than its arcade counterpart.

I'm in the same camp. The Master System has a load of decent games, but few of them are truly remarkable. Phantasy Star and Wonder Boy III are the only SMS titles I'd really consider classics, and the system has nothing to match Mega Man 2, The Guardian Legend, or Crystalis.

:eek 2: Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a classic in every sense of the word. There are others, but this omission is severe.

I would normally disagree with that, but this year I've come to appreciate Super Mario Bros after hating it since it first came out, so perhaps I shall give it another go. It is, afterall, the Master System's answer to SMB.

It's a good game, but the control is somewhat loose and the level design just doesn't have the inventive spark that drives me to see what's next. It's on the same ground as, say, Duck Tales for the NES. Fun stuff, yet I wouldn't call it a classic. Sorry.

But hey, bounce more A-list SMS titles off of me. Maybe I forgot something.

Hey Racoonlad, I was looking thru your cheat code section, I've got one for ya that you don't you have listed

Ghostbusters:
Enter the initials Q.W. and the account number as all 0's.
You will get $9,843,200.

With that much money you could spend the whole first level following around the gatekeep and keymaster letting them take your money and STILL have roughly 9 mil left!

Funny story about that code, it's not very well known, and me and my friend found it by fluke; we were actually fighting over who got to play next (we were 9) and in the tussle the letters QW got put in with no account number... then we saw that!!

The Power Strike shooters are both very good. Power Strike 2 I think was only released in Europe.

You're right. Power Strike is fun, Power Strike 2 is definitely a classic, and I forgot about them both.

Now, on to the other list . . .

Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Lucky Dime Caper, and Deep Duck Trouble: They're all fairly good action/platformers (and The Lucky Dime Caper is visually astounding for an 8-bit game), but like the Alex Kidd titles, they don't really strike me as truly great games. They're on par with Capcom's better Disney games, I'd say.

Forgotten Worlds: It's a fine port, but there doesn't seem to be a two-player feature, and I always thought Forgotten Worlds' gameplay, which requires you to rotate your aim by holding down a button, was frustrating and less effective than it would be with a simple lock-down fire button.

Micro Machines: Fun, as most of the MM games are. I'd probably prefer one of the later releases, though, for the multiplayer.

Fantasy Zone 2: I like it, but it's really not a "classic." I dunno.

Ninja Gaiden: Ehhh. The gameplay is solid, but the level design and enemies are pretty bland. It's notable only for its Engrish-laden cut scenes. Better than the arcade game, at least.

Asterix, Asterix and the Secret Mission: As with the Disney games, these two are well-crafted, but they're also somewhat rote, presaging the solid-yet-forgettable licensed platformers that would become commonplace on the Genesis and SNES.

Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos: I can't argue with these, since I've always liked Sonic.

Streets of Rage: Solid port, but I didn't really get into the Rage series until the second game. Is this the same as the Game Gear title?

Bubble Bobble: Who can resist Bubble Bobble? Not me, but then, it's not really an SMS exclusive.

Perhaps the problem (for me, anyway) is that there are relatively few unique SMS classics. When I think of the system's best, games like Sonic, Bubble Bobble, and Gunstar Heroes (a Brazilian release, right?) don't really spring to mind because I'm used to playing them on other consoles. And since I can play them elsewhere, I'm not really interested in owning them.

Of course, this is all just my opinion. I'm not the biggest fan of action/platform games.

I think I'd class Psycho Fox as my favourite SMS-only game. :)

Actually GunStar heroes, while released in Japan on the Game Gear, is only a rumored game for the SMS. Like with Thundercats, and Primal rage, no one has ever been able to prove it exists on the SMS.
