View Full Version : Things You're Sick Of (Gamewise)

I thought this would be a fun little thread. What things in the current game industry do you just hate? It can be a character, genre, platform, idea or pretty much anything, here's mine:
-Mario: Yes I said Mario, I loved his first game but I've never been much of a fan of anything of his since then (especially the abysmally terrible Sunshine). A fat plumber just isn't as interesting to me anymore *readies flame shield*.
-Overtly Violent Games: I'm not saying games like GTA and it's ilk are necessarily bad, but some games are really just doing it for the hell of it, caring not whether it works into the game in question, but simply trying to make a buck off of this current fad in the industry.
-Sports Games: Every year it's the same old song......but with a new roster. Not being a fan of sports in the first place I'm probably somewhat jaded. But look at it this way: if a new GTA were to come out every year since the early 90s, how many mags would be ragging on it? I guess it's too much of a cash cow to ignore.
-Nokia N-Gage: Thanks Nokia! Just what I needed! 3 subpar devices rolled into one nauseating little taco shape! Nevermind the fact that for $300 I could get a GBA, a minidisc player and a decent cell phone! Oh, and I've played better "games" within the confines of my web browsers...in flash.
that's all I can think of right now, but I'll probably have some more later. What are your most hated things in the gaming world?

Cookie-cutter games being released by everyone and choking out the good innovative titles.

'abysmally terrible' is a bit harsh for Sunshine. I think people just had high expectations of the game and it didn't live up to them for most people. It's still a lot better than your average platformer. :)
Personally...
Region locks on consoles - I bought a Jap PS2 to play Winning Eleven 7 and Bemani titles (I'm rather against chipping my consoles) and I'm toying with buying a US machine too. I already have a UK machine as it is. Personally I'd like to see region-free consoles and worldwide release dates... I imagine it'll never happen though.
Electronic Arts - I don't know what it is about them, but when I pick up a game I don't know much about, if I see that EA logo I instantly become wary. I can't remember the last EA title I enjoyed playing.
Prima /Brady Game Guides etc. - These always come out at the same time a game is released. I really wish there was a healthy delay to force people to explore and experiment with their games more. Plus it'd be nice to have mystery and rumours in an RPG rather than see it analysed to death in official/unofficial guidess and FAQs. It always seemed more special if you discovered something in a game that you hadn't seen anyone come across before. These days it's all been done before you get there.
Bemani - Not so much Bemani itself but the lack of it in the UK. I imagine it'll always be a niche thing but I'm hoping that as dancing games get more and more popular over here, people will try new things out like the wonderful Guitar Freaks. :)
That'll do me for now. :D

- Recycling old games as new ones.
- Five hundred ways to buy the same god-damn system. I'm sick of pack-ins.
- First Person Shooters
- Overpriced GBA games
- A complete lack of originality or creativity in 99% of the new games that come out.
- Higher res and more FPS = GUARANTEED BETTER GAME! (Yes, I am talking about the PC market)
- Being let-down by even the great game companies and great game designers of old

Stealth - Stop trying to make your game last longer by making us crawl and/or walk and not shoot our guns constantly.
FMV - You're a game, not a movie...get over yourself. I actrually tried out an RPG (shock! horror!!), Wild Arms 3 to be exact. I absolutely loved running around, shooting things in battle. I hated when they felt it necessary to give me background about my character. I don't care about my character, I care about finding a bigger damn gun!!!
Free Roaming environments - The main reason I don't play RPG's. I don't want to have to guess where I need to go next...give me a big arrow and let me move on. I appreciate games that force me back onto the track if I wander too far...Crash Bandicoot, Starfox, etc. I'm very worried about the new Tony Hawk (a series I've loved from day one, although I didn't play 4 all that much) game for this very reason...
Strategy guides released the same day as the game - I don't mind guides, but I don't like buying a game the day it comes out, and the sales associate politely telling me that I can finish the game today with this book...wait a month two months until I'm actually stuck. ok?
Mazes in FPS games - I dream of the day an FPS comes out where you don't have to worry about doors and pass cards and crap like that. You just have a long hallway filled with bad guys...if you make it to the end of the hallway, you go to the next hallway!!! Repeat 30 times, then give me a big ass boss!!! FUN!!!!
I think I've successfully eliminated about 95% of all games out there. It's little wonder that everything I really want right now is either a classic game compilation, or a racing game.

those 3rd person 3d shootemups where you land, get out, shoot around or whatever and hop in a new ship. Seriously. It's in Rebel Strike, its going to be in star fox 2 (NOOOOOOOOO!!), and its dumb. I want to be flying around blowing stuff up, not in some crummy 1st/3rd person shooter.

The amount of Crap games being made..Everybody and their brother is making games now..
Milking the shit out of a Character or Genre too far..
It's so hard to find a good/decent game these days..
Also the way gaming stores have become, with the unfriendly lousy service..(Oh,you must Pre-order).Know it all, know Nothing Employees..
The way Ebay has so many Scammers/Non paying Bidders/Noobs etc, buying and selling games..

I've got to second the nomination on regional lockouts.
The move towards a pre-order-only marketplace combined with PC games that come out riddled with bugs (though this is not new). I want to know if a game is worth buying before I put out money for it. (though, I've never actually pre-ordered anything, so I don't know how it works completly. I'm pretty sure that if I did know that I'd like it even less.)
The people who program the robots that operate the cashiers at EB and Gamestop. Can you make them say something different besides "Have you preordered" N$ "yet?" or "Do you want the strategy guide for that?" or "Hey don't forget to trade in your old games!" How about something friendly like "Hey, I've played this! I hope you really enjoy it." Then I might not hate the idea of actually having to go to the store again.
Oh and I detest the media attempting to blame video games for a few violent people who happened to play video games. Sheesh.

N Gage.....oh my gosh what were they thinking?
Average rushed games...and you think you are going to sell it for full price?
Classic 2D games redone in 3D....for the most part, it does not work
Delays in Xbox titles for Xmas...thank gosh I own the Cube and PS2
Rehashed title generes to death....can somebody make something origional?
straight across ports...if you want to save money by doing a straight across port then I will save money in my pocket!
Too many games...yeah you heard me right, this Xmas, great games are going to come out and they are going to get lost in the shuffle if they dont have a big name attached to them. That sucks because that means that alot of good blood and sweat will not pay off for those developers that care about making a good product.
Crappy pack ins...I dont care about CLone Wars and Tetris, give me a core system drop!
Software etc...Yeah I work there and I can honestly say that besides the rad people I work with, the company is evil!

It would be easy for me to say 90% of whats released today, but that would be unfair :P
- (as mentioned above) Overpriced strategy guides. $80 for game+ $30 for strategy guide= no thanks
- A couple of big companies churning out "safe" games and keeping risky niche games off the market, or at least reducing their sales. Thats how i see it anyway. Electronic arts is the main culprit.
- Electronic arts and their whoring of good companies. Its been said before, but i still dont like it. Not only that, but EA has a habit of releasing games in beta form (exaggeration, but you get the message)
- Less and less variety of games coming to PC, which is kinda related to the 2 above. Oh how i would love to see a game like Devil may cry on PC, instead of Unreal Tournament 200x
-Actually i think EA deserves their own point, for all the sims games they released. Curse you EA, curse you!

Well...unlike most people, I have no problems with the guides. I just buy em and shelve em for later.
As for things I despise:
Sports games - why do we need a new sports game for every sport every year when they're all the same? Why? STELLLLLAAAA!!!!!!
Repeated plot devices...especially AMNESIA! Have you ever noticed the percentage of game characters that have amnesia? It's like 75%! It's unbelievable how many people in games suffer from memory loss! Same goes for angsty tragic heroes, etc etc
Stale gameplay! I'm tired of 3rd person games that all use the same perspective and have the same controls and the same gameplay. BORING! Very few innovative uses of the cameras/perspectives out there.
Lack of innovation. Kind of the same as stale gameplay...but VERY few games are unique or innovative anymore....most are just similar to those that have been released. I rarely buy AAA titles anymore cause they're all the same, and most of the unique stuff barely gets released! I was so happy when stuff like Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Viewtiful Joe, JSRF, and Panzer Dragoon Orta were released. Stuff that's a bit different than the standard fare! If I wanted a standard style game, I'd go back to my 8 and 16 bit collection...they were done better then!
The sheer volume of games! So many games are coming out so fast that not only do I barely have time to keep up with BUYING them (much less playing them) but the games also suffer quality control issues. Bad discs, unfinished gameplay, bad testing. As the number of games coming increases, the number of quality games decreases even faster!
Genre lockdowns - I'm sick of seeing only certain types of games for certain systems! Where are my GC Rpgs? My PS2 kid-style AAA platformers, my XBox space shooters? The consoles are all limiting themselves to certain genres mostly anymore. You see few RPGs outside the PSX, few non-action games on the Cube, few games at all on the XBox. And the PC is worst of all. RTS, FPS, MMORPGs, and sim games, and the occasional poorly selling adventure game....nothing else! Friggin make a game for the platform you like, not the one that Sony or MS or NOA thinks you should!
RTS games! Ugh. Why are they all the same??? Same perspective, same "build and destroy" style of play. There's no strategy at all, just build build build crush. Soooooooooo boring!
I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of right now. Now I'm going to go play Viewtiful Joe...a FRESH NEW game! :)

One problem I have is with Nintendo, they just keep making games with the same old characters, they need to start making some new and original idea's. I don't really have a problem with alot of the old characters but it can get sickien after awhile.

Getting lost: Ugh. I've played Castlevania: HOD of the GBA 3 times now, each time getting lost for 3 hours, then giving it up. My god man, there's no need for 30 different keys, finding one, heading to a dead spot on the map, then realizing you don't have the right key.ARGH!
"Collectibles:" Why in the hell are you unable to get decent endings in games unless you make death-defying jumps, insane moves, or defeat every enemy in every concievable fashion to get the "Good ending?" For instance, I just beat Contra on the PS2, but since I didn't shoot everything and blow it up, I got the crappy ending. Find a way to make your games harder or add more stages, not stupid collectables.

1) All of the senseless, needlessly graphic, violence. It does nothing for the game itself, except to add "shock value," which the entertainment industry seems to be obsessed with.
2) One-on-One fighting games. It's been 14 years, for crying out loud! Even the Pac-Man genre only lasted a few years.
3) The lack of innovation and attempt at anything new.
4) Smut.

Stop the rereleases, we all know how much the GBA caters to this, don't misunderstand, I am the first one to buy these rereleases (looking forward to River City Ransom) but it seems like this practice is starting to get over excessive. Super Mario Advance anyone? Mario All Stars was enough for me. There are probably over 100 titles I could name but I won't because the gamers on this board are very smart and know what I am talking about :frustrated:

3D and controversial content. If I see one more whoop-de-doo three fucking D game, I swear I'm going to ram Ken Kuratagi's head through a plate glass window.
Also, game companies need to stop pandering to their audiences with excessive violence and dark storylines. How the hell did Jak and Daxter II suddenly get so serious? That, coupled with all the ideas Naughty Dog stole from other, more popular games, makes me think Jak and Daxter II has "focus group" written all over it.
In conclusion: no more soulless, desperate, pandering, trendchasing bullshit games.

I hate sequals where the end boss is always the same
ie mario,sonic,crash
I also hate that there are not enough variety I want more shmups more rpgs and more QUALITY adventure/action games
And sports games should never be more than $20 expecially the ea stuff

One word: "Unlockables." If your game is shit from the get-go, don't make me play it even longer just so I can see all of the stuff hidden within. Just give me all the special moves/special costumes/special vehicles/special whatevers right off the bat dammit.

Plus I hate GTA type games.
Games that are hyped a ton then suck ass!
Games that are deleyed for months then still suck.
Franchise modes! Who the hell is going to play 15 full seasons on a hockey came?

The "big bad guy at the end" is an outmoded, antiquated, monotonous and tedious element and should be dropped. If a "final challenge" is necessary, make it a true challenge -- something cerebral, like a puzzle with the elements chosen randomly each session or something.
We also need more FPSs. Some of us only have modern consoles because of the fun of exploring a world through the "windshield" view.
We don't need any more sports games, racing games or fighting games (honestly, how many times can you clone Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat with prettier graphics?).

About movie games, the Hulk game isn't too bad, it actually plays somewhat like a hyped up Double Dragon. The Bruce Banner levels in between the Hulk levels aren't particularly exciting, but they don't kill the experience either! I'd agree with a hell of a lot of what you guys have said.
Oh, and those who wanted a AAA platformer on ps2....SLY COOPER. It's gone GH and is an absolute BLAST. Shame it probably won't receive a sequel.

Sly cooper better not get a sequel, it portrays raccoons in a negative light.

...open-ended gameplay...OK, it worked in GTAVC, but that was because that game had so many compelling mini-games and mini-missions. That's NOT what I'm looking for in a Tony Hawk game, and IMO that style ruined THPS 4 (and it sounds like the series is moving even farther in that direction). I like goals to be clear. I like progress.I like LEVELS. I don't like that "what now?" feeling.
...long levels...save this for the end of the game. No, I don't want a game to be one long level. I'm on the same level in Metroid Prime that I was six months ago. Let me sleep for Pete's sake! And while we're on this subject...
...extended gameplay...Look, when I buy a game all I ask is five good hours. That's all. If you want to give me a reason to go back and replay it, great. Otherwise, I'm ready to move on to a new relationship. This is not a marriage. When I read a review of a game that says it's too short, great! I seek that game out immediately. I finished GTAVC last month...nearly a year after I bought it! Very few games are of high enough quality (GTAVC, Goldeneye, SOTN) to keep me playing that long. Don't turn the game into work, or an alternative lifestyle. If I want more, I'll be happy to pony up for a sequel.
...3D platformers...enough already!
...Madden...skip a couple years, or experiment with the gameplay a little. Yes, this is totally unrealistic as Madden is a cash cow, but remember this is all IMO.
..."attitude"...If I was "extreme", I wouldn't be sitting on my butt diddling a control pad.

I'm sick of CHEATS. Yes, CHEATS. Why are they necessary? You should have to earn your way to better levels, better vehicles/ guns/ armor, etc. It is more exciting that way and more of a challenge. Now you just go online and grab the cheat code and you've basically beaten the game. No more being "first on your block" to reach a certain level.
Cheats suck........

People already beat me to mine ... first person shooters. Doom should have been a game, not a genre. That's just me. I'm sure if you delve deeper into the games they must seem different, but to me it's like 1000 different copies of Mario but in each one he has a different colored hat or something. They all look the same to me, they all give me headaches, and none of them are fun. Of course they sell millions of copies so I'm sure I'm in the minority.
I'm also sick of how big games have gotten (PC games). The one FPS I *do* enjoy is Ghost Recon. My Ghost Recon directory, with all the mandatory patches, Desert and Jungle add-ons, is over 2 gig now. For a game.
2k combat, anyone?

Platformers with cute/cuddly characters
"Extreme" sports games
Crap games based on licences from movies/TV
Games that just slap licensed music soundtracks on just to do it
"Dumbing down" of games so any one can beat them (I always laugh when people say GTA:VC is too hard -- try beating GTA1!)
3D games with bad camera angles... this ruined the new Shinobi and several others for me
The whole "tough chick who shows a lot of skin" cliche character

I notice a lot of you don't like FPS. 4 words for you folks: Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
ALSO, about cheats, I absolutely love cheats on one condition: they let me open up new things in MULTIPLAYER. I like the game Kung Fu Chaos one multiplayer but it's a bland experience on single player. I wish there was a code that I could use to blow it wide open for whenever friends are over, but alas there haven't been any good codes at all for this game. Other than that I really have no use for codes unless they give me access to something that can't be experienced in any other way.
And Raccoon Lad....Sly Cooper wasn't stealing, he was taking back pages stolen from his family's book of tricks (but I'm assuming you were playing SMS while that game was enjoying it's prime sales :D).

"mature gaming".. FUCK!, will someone please wipe this retarded buzz word concept and all the retarded fuckwits who buy into it from the face of the earth .
C'mon, it appeals to children and the weak minded fasion "gamers" (and I use the term "gamers" loosely) who purchase games for the sake of having/doing what's cool and might make them look cool to other equally weak minded prats who care more about the actual image of a game (which is inevitably dictated to them as cool by mass marketing) than the actual gameplay content and FUN the game provides.
Its ridiculous!, the very concept is a bloody paradox.
