Hey everyone...

I'm looking for any open source Gameboy emulators written in C (not C++) if anyone knows of any... I don't want GBA, and I really have no use for Gameboy Color, although it seems like all the ones I see are GB/GBC emus. Does anyone know any good ones? So far, I've seen gest and gnuboy, both of which have GBC, and although gest seems to have better sound emulation, gnuboy seems more portable... Has anyone tried either of these emus, or know of any other open source ones? Does anyone have any suggestions of which would be more portable/compatible/better/non-GBC?

I'm sure you guys are wondering what I have planned for this... well, I've been thinking of this for a while, and every time I look at the similarities between the Virtual Boy and the Game Boy, I keep thinking that with a prebuilt GB emulation core, it wouldn't be THAT tough to port a GB emulator to the VB. But of course before I start on a big project like this, I'd like everyone's input on how these emus are, and if anyone knows of a better open source one.

Thanks,

DogP

A list of every available GB emulator is here:

Some are source, but most are a year or more old. I like gnuboy, but if I were to work with a source for this machine I would definitely go with Gest. The code is being updated constantly, and as you said, the sound core is on spot.

Thanks! I've looked at the Gest and the gnuboy code... I think I'll go with gnuboy. The Gest code just seems overall less portable (uses directdraw and stuff), where gnuboy uses pretty much all standard stuff... Also, I'm not really worried about sound right now, because I'm not totally sure how sound on the VB works, plus I'll probably end up using more of the VB hardware to do GB sound (they're both very similar, VB has 2 more channels though), along with a lot of other stuff. So the actual emulation of gnuboy is good though?

Yes, Gnuboy's emulation is on spot. It is very portable as you said as well. There is even a Dreamcast port of the emulator which works awesomely! I personally think games look better through Gnuboy on the DC than they do with the GB Player :)
