View Full Version : Anybody seen that Arcade Game Cabinent at Fry's Electronics?

This might be a California only question, because I think that Fry's Electronics, is kinda like a electronics super store, or a Costco for everything electronic in California.
I don't know if they have Fry's in other states. Anyways, they have a website that you can check out at www.outpost.com .
Well, I walked into my local Fry's the other day, to get a compact flash card for my digital camera, and I see this full size Arcade Cabinet, with Soul Caliber 2 from the XBOX playing on it. Basically, it's an Arcade Cabinet that is custom built to hold a 27 inch television, and either game systems or a PC for emulation. It has this really heavy duty double joystick control built in, and a storage area below for the systems that you are going to connect to it. It also has a audio system built into it. The unit is $999.99, but you have to provide your own TV or display device. The double joystick thing that comes with the unit can also be purchased seperately for $99.99
I just thought this thing was pretty interesting. What I would do, is get a 27 inch RGB monitor that would fit correctly into the cabinet, and then hook up systems like the SNES, Genesis, Saturn, etc, etc to it.
I think it would be pretty sweet. Of course, I would be paying a grand for the cabinet, and then another 400 or so bucks for the 27 inch RGB monitor. So this would be a very expensive proposition.
Then there is the question of would I really enjoy playing games standing up? I mean, I'm sure it would be cool for awhile, but after the novelty wears off, I would probably rather be sitting in my barcolounger!

That seems horribly expensive for an empty cab.
You can build your own for a fraction of that cost. Or you could buy a used one, gut it, and customize it.

Yeah, that defintely does seem like a high price. Plus if you bought a used cab that had a top of the line Wells-Gardner RGB monitor in it, it would be a better idea. The only problem is how would you get the sound system that is pre-built into the cab to work with the video game machines that you put in there?
Also, if you are looking to buy a used Arcade cab, where do you look to buy something like that?

Could you tell me where you can get a 27" RGB monitor for $400? At that price I'd like to buy about 5 of them.

Getting a large rgb monitor for cheap isn't that hard. I bought a 33" Tekken 2 cab for $500 working all the way, including the monitor. I've seen working 25" Dynamo cabs with no game board but clean monitors for $25 before. Not very often and you'd have to pull the location out of me with pliers, but they can be found!
If you are looking for used cabs, check out www.superauctions.com or hit rec.games.video.arcade.collecting on usenet. There's always stuff for sale!

getting the speakers to work shouldn't be that difficult... you could probably wire them up through a cheap receiver, and then plug your deck into that.

I have pliers. Big ones.
Would these be monitors with outer casings, or raw monitors for use inside cabs? I'm looking for a good rgb monitor that can be standalone.
BTW, I've been to superauctions before. No auctions on the East Coast.
Anyone know of a listing of auctions in New England? I haven't been able to find any.

Hmmm... Big pliers huh? Remind me to be careful around you!! :P
Nah, these are just the monitors themselves. No casing or anything. I agree. If you are looking for something standalone it's going to cost you a lot more than $400!!
I thought SA had an auction site on the east coast, but I guess they don't. I know they were talking about adding some more locations, but apparently they never did. All the better thought, means more games coming to Dallas for me to pick through!!

I am going to Super Auctions next weekend in Dallas, so I'll be posting prices and pictures again (go me!). The bad thing about auctions is it just depends on the crowd. I bought Mat Mania and Shinobi for $25 each, but at the last auction I went to a shabby Ms. Pac-Man went for $1,200.
It's tough buying games for personal use at those auctions because those guys see them as money. IE: If they buy Ms. Pac-Man, they probably have some convenient store in mind where they can put it and make some money off of it, while I am going to put it in my backyard on free play. Even dead cabs are hard, as they have the parts lying around to bring them back alive, and you most likely don't.
It's a fun hobby but the key for me is patience. At one auction I went to nothing sold below $400, and at the next one I bought four games and the highest I paid was $100 for a minty fresh Elevator Action.

Hey Flack,
I'm gonna be at that auction as well. Always am. I'm working on Raedon to head out there too. I haven't heard of anything good coming yet, but I'll be seeing one of my collecting buddies tonight, so I'll see if he knows of anything heading in.
The auction itself isn't always a good place to get games. I usually go for the networking I can do while I'm there. The parking lot deals are by far the best around!

Cool, I'll drop ya an e-mail before I head out (coming from OKC). Like I said, the auctions here have been hit or miss. There's a guy in the paper right now that has three games for sale (Time Pilot for $400) but I just can't seem to buy stuff a week before an auction.
Oh, and tomorrow I'm driving down to HarmonicaMan's place to pick up that Heavy Barrel cab.

For empty/old cabinets check your local yellow pages under amusement devices and call around.
I aquired a converted Joust and converted Qix for $75.00 each.
They came in the form of Pyros and Tiger-Heli.
I scored the Elevator Action for $45.00 at Goodwill.
Also check the newsgroups: arcade collecting/marketplace..
Sometimes free gutted cabs or at low cost.

Did they work? I'd love to own an arcade cabinet for only $75!

I've mentioned this in other threads, but the first six games I owned were all less than $100 at local auctions. Mat Mania and Shinobi were $25 each, both working. Prices seem to have gone up a bit in the past few years, but the last couple I've bought have been in the $100-$200 range.

Dude, I could use a Shinobi cabinet. Better yet, a Shadow Dancer cab. W00t.
Buying a bare cabinet with a joystick in it for $999? No way.

Ugh, the panel has cigarette burns in it. Why do idiots always do that (I'm not saying you did it or are an idiot)? Every cab I see has freakin' cigarette burns all over the panel. The cab I just bought needs to have the start buttons replaced because the tops of both of them have melted spots from cigarettes.
