The DP Quasi-Randomizing Generator O' Games has selected Tron Deadly Discs on this fine day. Originally it picked the 2600 version but what the hell, it's feeling flexible today, let's open this up to all of the home versions. But not Discs of Tron, certainly a much different game despite its name.

The Intellivision sound effects are the most memorable part of this game for me, and the 2600 version was a fairly well-done port of the Intelly classic. What are your thoughts? Did you like the game? Have you ever gotten to the end of it? Which version did you like better? Tried the Aquarius version?

Write your own mini-review here.

DP Guide sez:

Tron Deadly Discs (Atari 2600, by M Network) $5/R2
Designed by Jeff Ronne, Brett Stultz. Adapted from the Intellivision game "Tron Deadly Discs". Mattel created a special bonus pack that included this game, "Adventures of Tron", and a special Tron joystick. SANTULLI SLANT: By far the best game among the TRON console titles (none of these compare to the most excellent coin-op), in this one, various electronic monkeys throw feces at you. Avoid the feces or catch them in your bag o' feces. The only way to destroy the monkeys is to throw feces back at them! If you get really good, they'll stop throwing them at you and instead attempt to maul you with their golden shafts. It's true, that's what's happening. Tron Deadly Discs (Atari 2600, by Digitel) $5/R3

Tron Deadly Discs (Intellivision, by Mattel/INTV) $3/R1
Designed by Steve Sents. More popular than the movie, selling over 300,000 units. A "re-graphic" version of Tron Deadly Discs can be found as a hidden game in INTV Corp's Dig Dug. Blue Sky Ranger jokester Dave Warhol replaced the enemies with the hot dogs from Burgertime for his own personal amusement. those guys! EASTER EGGS: Open the top left and top right doors, enabling you to go in one door and out the other. Step out the top right or top left door and stay there. 90% of the enemy discs go through you and your man can't be hit or destroyed. If you stay there, you can reach a score of 1,000,000 easily just by breaking the enemy's discs and throwing your disc enough to keep one enemy on the screen. Once you close in on a million points, don't destroy any more warriors. Just hold your disc in the block mode and break discs. If you do get hit just go back and forth for repair. (Never throw a disc to destroy a warrior or you might get a replacement that carries the stick). c1982 Walt Disney Co, Mattel. #5391.

Tron Deadly Discs (Mattel Aquarius, by Mattel) $12/R4
Shooter/Fixed-Screen. #4024.

I haven't played this fine game yet, but I will next month, when I get my Intellivision II with some games that the Blue Sky Rangers couldn't include in their CDs because of licensing.

I liked this game quite a lot as a kid. But, I only had the 2600 version. It was a good game at the time.. fun and addictive. But like you said, nothing compared to the arcade Tron games. The big difference with the Intellivision one was that awesome Recognizers or whatever they were..

Hey Joe! Thanks for fixing the 2600 pic. I thought you were just trying to make the ol' 2600 look bad. :)

One of my favorites on the Intelly, just love it. The appearance of the Recognizer may well be one of the coolest, hair raising moments in early home console gaming. Fast-paced frenetic fun, this game always gets a turn whenever I power up the Intellivision.

The only Tron game I remember for the C64 was a Light Cycle game ... and I can recall at least three versions of that.

Tron Deadly Discs inspired my friends and I to create our own game. Everyone brought over a frisbee, and we played Tron Deadly Discs in the front yard. It was a lot like Chinese Freeze Tag*, except instead of catching the other person you could just hit them with your frisbee. The game ended suddenly, when my friend Andy got hit in the upper lip so hard with a frisbee that it knocked his tooth out. Damn video game violence. We should have sued.

*If the name of "Chinese Freeze Tag" has changed to something more politically correct, I apologize in advance. My neices told me the other day they did a "ring and run." After explaining to me what it was, I said, "oh yeah, we used to call that nig ... uh, nevermind kids."

I love this game. I am capable of kicking large quantities of ass on the 2600 version. When I got back into 2600 collecting several years ago, and found that I was missing my two Tron games, they were at the top of my list of games to "reacquire." Great stuff.

I barley remember the game but you forgot the Mattel Aquarius version I remember playing it on that. Parents sold the console and games a G-sale for $5 (yuck).
