Absolutely not, doesn't make any sense.

Well, it kinda does, it would secure sony's #1 spot by totally BLOWING THE CRAP out of ANYTHING for the holidays. If they did that, I would guess they would take 95% of all holiday console sales.

Of course, that's cutting the price in HALF, so there's NO WAY it will ever happen :)

He's right. Makes no sence for Sony to need to reduce the price. Nintendo may be #2 now, but Sony is sitll at the top.

Now, Microsoft doing a price drop before Christmas -- THAT I would wager is going to happen. :-P

Just like it has already been mentioned : #1 only drops his price to match #2.
So let's see what Microsoft does.

Give away the staplers and they'll be back for the staples...

Hmmm, I'm skeptical, but stranger things have happened. Sure Sony doesn't need to do this, but as Sylent said, that would blow the crap out of anything else this holiday season. The PS2 is three years old now, and in today's market for electronics, that's a damn long time to stay at relatively the same price point. Skeptical, but personally I see it as a smart move for Sony to nail that coffin.

That logic really seems like putting the cart before the horse, don't you think? Maybe if they put some better titles out, they'd be back on their feet. I don't see any reason why not being the number one console would prevent them from releasing better games, unless they were hurting so bad financially that they pawned everyone's development kits and forced them to use CoCos (that's the Radio Shack Color Computer for you kiddies :)) instead.

Just a thought.

I think it's very possible that Sony will drop the price of PS2. I don't know if they will drop it to $99 but I wouldn't put it past them. I think this move is not only to combat Nintendo but also Microsoft. Microsoft has been doing pretty good as of late until all these price drops. I believe that the price drop on Sonys part would be more to capture the mindshare of America rather then the market. The next generation could (and probably will be) the fiercest console war yet. Sony knows that one little slip up could lead to them losing the market. So even though Nintendo really isn't making a dent now it could lead to greater things to come later on if Sony doesn't do something about it. I am all for a balanced market. So I wish Nintendo and Microsoft the best!

It doesn't make sense. I know there were loads of people just sitting on their hands waiting for the cube to drop to under $100, and then when it did they all went out and bought one... Sony's installed base is already so massive that I can't imagine there are that many people out there hesitating to buy one. A drop to $150 wouldn't be a bad idea, but I still don't think it will move systems, at least nothing like the recent nintendo pricecut has.

If anything I'll view it as a nod to all those who bought a PS2, it broke, and didn't have enough money to replace it LOL

As much as I'd love to see this happen, one thing really makes me think it's just a rumor. And that's the fact that Sony is bringing out the resdesigned PS2, which has the built in IR for the DVD remote, and progressive scan capability.(:rocker:) IIRC it has the Network Adapter as well.

Hell, for all I know, that could be part of the master plan. There would be a huge spike in sales, as I know plenty of people who's pick one up.

I'm very sure that Sony's made their money back on this thing, how could they have not by now? Xertev made a great statement that I hope holds true:

Give away the staplers and they'll be back for the staples...

Playstations sells have been great and is doing very well. I dont think they should drop below $100. They should either keep it where it is and add some good games in a bundle pack, or drop the price by $50, not a hundred.

Cool, maybe they can port Dungeons of Daggerath or Shock Trooper in the process after they switch development platforms.

I think that the price will drop for sure... maybe not to $99.

Sony's sales of the PS2 have been slumping recently, and they just opened up a new factory to begin producing the chips at a lower cost to them. With the Xbox having some decent releases this Christmas, I think it all points to an expected price drop.
