OK here's a thread I'd like to update every other month or so. Sort of a "heads up" for gamers of all different systems. I'm also considering making this a side-box on my Tips & Tricks column (with the Retrogaming Roundtable again listed as the "council" on this).

This idea popped into my head when I realized...

What the HELL? Bust-a-Groove 2 for PSX is RARE? I mean... THAT rare? Check out some sellers, online auctions, etc. www.half.com has sellers expecting over $100 for it.

I've got some more that I found while studying PSX games today, but list ANY title, ANY system here, if you've discovered its rare either through personal experience, a trade, inside info, or even online availability.

Toejam isn't rare. it was produced in large quantities, and it is just in high demand, and everybody wants it, so they'd pay a lot of money for it. I thought Harvest moon 64 was rare too cuz i saw it on ebay for up to 60 bucks, but it's just in high demand.

Well, i just recently figured out that Ren and Stimpy Fire Dogs will be rare, since it was only available by rental. i got it at video update when they were selling out they're stock. i have it with the box too.

i've sold a few games here and about, and later found out i more or less shot myself in the foot somewhat:

discworld (playstation)- bought part one on ebay for 10.50 (perfect shape!), found part two new for 9.99 at a music store that sold games from a small cardboard box near the cash register. sold them both to some VERY happy lady for $30. thought i made out like a bandit, until i saw that she auctioned off both games and got about $120 (d'oh!)

sonic council (saturn)- so-so 2D fighter. had it, hated it, dumped it for $25 with shipping- later found out it's was worth about $65 used (ugrgle)

groove on fight (saturn)- ditto. the boxed one fetches about 80 bucks or more. sold mine for $35 (oog)

intelligent qube (psx)- bought mine new for $19.99 at a kay-bee sale (they had a LOAD of them)- played it, finished it, sold it for $15. try and find one cheap now, lol...

indiana jones and the infernal machine (n64)- ONLY sold online via lucasarts or in selected blockbuster video shops. spent 3 months scouring blockbusters around the city, finally snatched a complete one off ebay for about $60. 4 of the other bidders e-mailed me offering everything from $100 to a complete porno collection (40 tapes! you can't beat that man!"). i kept the game this time...

Those discworld games are rare, but they aren't worth $120 She might of got luckly off some idiot. Like Sothy just said his sealed copy only went for $30

Oh and in case someone needs these two games, a local store near me has both 1 & 2 used for around $15-20 each. I could pick them up, if it's worth it to anyone.

Yashiro - You had me all excited for a minute there, but I checked out eBay and that auction was obviously a fluke. One person bid $50 and another person with no feedback bid 14 times to get it as high as possible. $20 is typical for game with jewel case and instructions.

Oh well!

I didn't know the Kisado adapter for the TG-16 I had was worth ANYTHING for about 3-5 YEARS.

Then I sold it for $350 and bought a turboduo and a LOT of games :)

I was shocked when I read in this board (or was it the old Ezboard version?) that King Arthur and the Knights of Justice (SNES) was rare. Of all my SNES carts, it's the one I like least, along with Rocko's Modern Life (great cartoon, baaaaad videogame!).

anyone else ever come across a PAL "Space Adventure" for the Mega CD? Or know roughly what it is actually worth?

I know Snatcher is fairly rare ... I have seen it go for up to Ģ70. I got mine on a BIN for Ģ30, and was very happy!!

it was released here in the u.s. in limite4d quantities as well. the japanese version is called space adventure cobra, and i believe it's based on the 2nd pc-engine cd game, called (remarkably enough) space adventure cobra II...

it's NO snatcher, by the way- more of a "b" movie/digital comic hybrid...

I passed up the Coleco Smurf Paint Pro game up for the adventure Smurf CV game because I didn't have the hardware to play the former. Later I learned that it commands a #5 rarity rating in the DP Guide. I could have bought it for $3. *stabs self with rustry screwdriver*. Also, I bought SFII CE for PC Engine, and the seller throws in what turns out to be the PC Engine Purple Barney Converter for free. I didn't care, since I had a PC Engine Duo and a Turbo Duo at the time and didn't need a converter, so I put it up on eBay and guess what? it sold for more than my Duo did! $132.00! woo hoo!

Basically all the Saturn games (30) I received with my White Saturn back in late 1998 for $200. Soon, I started trading them for cheap garbage, now i'm kicking myself 10x over... Especially the Psychic Ninja Taromaru game... I did trade it for a Turbo Duo, which later broke... The only two I still have left from the 30 are Super Real Mahjong Grafitti and Keio Yugekitai...

A little while ago I read somewhere in the forums that Swat Kats for SNES is supposedly somewhere between a 7 and a 10... I wish I knew the exact number.

I've never seen the game on e-bay untill today..... no bids on it and just over one day left... no pictures and it doesn't say anything about a box or manual.... Probably not that much demand for it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1383611729

I have a box with my copy of the game... too bad the stupid re-sell stickers ruined it.

The greatest surprise I have had would be this:

A long time ago, a friend of mine was the manager of a Toys R Us, and he called me one day, telling me about a Dragonball game on the PSX. Being a huge fan, I ran down there. Of course, it was Dragonball GT: Final Bout. I bought a copy for $30, as did another friend and my friend who worked there.
After playing it, I decided to go buy a few more copies to give to fellow DB fans for their birthdays, Christmas, etc.

Fast forward about 5 years, and I had become a video game collector. Looking through my collection, and finding the values of my games and systems, I rediscovered Dragonball GT, as well as two unopened copies. After finding out that they were selling for $150 on EBay, I ran to tell my other friends who had copies of the game. One person had traded his in years ago to get another game, and another friend sold me his for $30, since I was the one who got it for him.

So at one time, I had 4 copies of Dragonball GT: Final Bout, two of which were still sealed.

I couldn't have been happier.

I never thought that The Raiden Project for the PSX would ever command more than $20 on eBay, but that's what it does in nearly every auction. And they say that no one likes old-school shooters.

So Geelw, Sonic Council isn't particularly good?

well i new that Metal Slug 1 for neo geo was rare but when i seen it sell for 2,500 dollars on ebay it shocked me, it was used, still had the case and instruction booklet and the poster it came with, all in great condition, personally I dont think I'd blow nearly that much on a game unless I won the lottery and became filthy rich.

one more thing, this is kinda off topic but this proves alot of those flea market people really dont know what they are selling. A week ago i went to the local flea market ::shiver:: like going to a carnie convention....anyways, i usually hit up the same to guys 1 has a huge selection of not so rare and kool games and systems for cheap , and the other has a not so huge selection but he seldomly gets rare games in, and well on this fine thursday afternoon i was talking to this man and he tells me he got a box from some guy with 5 still wrapped never been open sega saturn games, BUT sadly they are all the same game, so i asked him to show me and he did, what was this game? lets just say i almost had a stroke on the spot, 5 never opened panzer dragoon saga games for SS, even better he gave them to me for 15 bucks a crack WOW DID HE LOOSE OUT, either way, ive decided to open one and play, WOAH WHAT A GAME , im keeping one still wrapped for safe keeping and i will be posting the other 3 on ebay soon, i will keep you all posted and give a link in case anyone is looking for it. :D

My wife got a Privateer 2 The Darkening game complete in the box at goodwill for me for $4.99 and i thought what the heck. I put it on E-Bay and got $55.00 for it. Never new computer games were worth anything. Thought people would just pirate them.

I find it weird that you were offered $100 for a complete Indiana Jones for the N64 because I've monitored it's auctions for over a year now and I've never seen a copy go for that. In fact, all the complete copies on Ebay right now are lucky if they clear $25.
http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResult&query=Indiana+Jones+Nintendo+64&from=R8&ht=1&combine=y&st=2&SortProperty=MetaEndSort

I've got a box full of them that I snagged because I counted on them being sought after once the N64 was history. But it's a shitty game and among the Blockbuster exclusives, it's easily one of the most common. Think of it like this. There are only four active copies on ebay right now. There are 3 Razor Scooters, 2 Beast Wars, 0 copies of Clay Fighter Sculptor's Cut... ebay isn't the best way to figure out rarity, but it gives you a hint.

As for games I didn't know were rare until recently, Puzzle Fighter for PSX suprised me... so did NCAA Basketball for the Cube. I'm stunned that I couldn't find a copy anywhere in town here.

Well,

Although I new it was rated a 9, when I bought my Q*Bert's Cubes mint/complete in mint box (for $1.99!!), I was surprised by how much some people were offering for it. I am keeping it for now, but I had no idea that it was worth that much. Then again, I had no idea that ANY 2600 game was worth that much, so I guess there is no shock there.

I typically NEVER use eBay as a judge of what's rare - especially when it comes to how much people are paying. I do, however, use it to see how often a game comes up for sale. Then, eBay can be very helpful.

Charlie has an excellent point about the N64 exclusives - I can't find Clay Fighter Sculpter's Cut anywhere - on the net or in person. (By the way, someone please correct my list of N64 exclusives if I am wrong: ClayFighter Sculpter's Cut, International Superstar Soccer 2000, Indiana Jones ,International Track & Field 2000, NFL Blitz: Special Edition, Razor Freestyle Scooter, Stunt Racer 64, Transformers.)

I get kind of annoyed when I here about people identifying games as RARE, when they aren't really rare - just popular, or overpriced because of misinformed buyers.

I just picked up Bebe's Kids for SNES because I remembered the cartoon and I liked Robin Harris. I was pleased to discover that it was rated a 7.

What kind of print run would a game have to have to be considered rare and how would a person even know what the total print run for a game was? I can't see a game like AFDS being a huge seller. That and the fact that it's no longer in print doesn't make it hard to believe that it may be rare.

Silent Bomber.

I played the demo of it way back when it was on the OPM demo disc (japanese demo too) and loved it, so months later i find it at a best buy for $9.50. What a weird price.

er anyway i was looking in a GMR mag a few months ago and in their little "then n now" section they said Silent Bomber was a great game and hard to find, so i went on ebay and say it for $60+ :D good thing i bought it.

same with Bangai-o for dreamcast. i didnt know it was rare.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for PS2, 1 week it was $15 then now its like $50-60. When I heard it was gonna stop being printed I bought a couple copies. Especially now since the Marvel name is so big then game will never get reprinted since it costs too much just to use the name now.

funny, i played that OPM demo as well like it was going out of style, and i think i read the same GMR article, not sure if it was there or not but i read somewhere how there was a very low production number on that game, before i found it on ebay i had never even seen a copy before, so i guess it was a bit of a "holy grail" for me, it seems quite common in europe though.

I just recently followed a link to an eBay auction for Stadium Mud Buggies for the Intellivision. It was something like $240! I figured out that the game was rare years ago, but I didn't realize just how rare until that point. I ordered mine directly from INTV. Later my local Toys R' Us had loads of them in stock, eventually knocking them down to $9.90. They never got in Spiker!, though. I probably wouldn't have bought it anyway, since sports games never entertained me at all.

Also a few weeks ago I told this story in another thread. Somewhere in the range of four or five years ago when I first started collecting, I bought a pile of NES games for dirt cheap and in the mix was; Caltron 6-in-1 and The Flintstones the surprise at dinosaur peak. When I got home I was updating my "inventory" papers (At the time was writing each game, if it was complete, the rarity, and value in a tablet.) and looked the two up and realized both were amazingly rare.
