Ok, it's obvious to me that these games are related. They almost have to be. Is one a sequel/prequel to the other, or are they completely seperate?

They are Seperate. They are both made by Capcom as you can tell. I think one came out a year before the other.

I'd have to say that CA is the spiritual sequel to UN Squadron... while not a direct sequel to UN Squadron (which was based on the manga/anime series Area 88), it definitely used the same format as the original. The story and characters are completely different, however.

I always thought CAW was related to UNS in some way. UNS didn't have Sean Connery, so I don't think CAW a direct sequel. LOL
But it is a good shmup, that I can't deny. Yay for Capcom! :hail:

Holy crap! I was just playing UN Squadron tonight! I found some arcade screenshots (and I kinda remember playing this game at a pizza joint in high school), but was this game ever released for a console?

Un Squadron had an excellent SNES home port.....(shameless plug coming). Check out the review here on the site written by your truly!

How much are the two that related? I was under the impression the SNES version wasn't exactly the same...

I always thought that Carrier Airwing WAS the sequel to UN Squardron! Shows what I know :D But yeah, they must be from the same design team or something.

After playing through all of CAW, I've found that they even use the same sprites! There are tons of the same planes, and the bosses are even the same half the time. Great game, but I'm stunned how much was brought over from UN!

The Super NES version of the game lets the player choose rounds on a large battlefield map. Your selections are limited, but it does nevertheless give the game more flexibility than the arcade version.
I never liked UN Squadron, though. I hated the wailing sirens whenever you were hit, and the obnoxious semi-auto fire that forced you to release the button and press it back down every two seconds. Its sequel, Carrier Air Wing, was a lot more enjoyable, at least to me.

Whoops! I meant to ask if Carrier Air Wing had a console counterpart.

Not that I've ever seen - which sucks, because I really wanted one. :(

It wasn't, which bites a lot, as it could have been a great shmup if designed like the format of UN Squadron on the SNES. Damn. :frustrated:

Thanks for the info. I'll have to get it on MAME as soon as I get a system set up for it.
