I had an 8-bit growing up, and I'd still say the C64. That SID chip, man!

I had the Atari 800XL, and later an XE when I was a kid... and I have to admit that it was all about the games. Sure, there was the SID chip, but I still think that the Atari could produce some good sound (except those voices on E.T x_x).
The C64 got the better support, and therefore won the war.. But, there were some really great games that never made it to the C64, like Alleycat (best cat game ever)! There were too many C64 exclusive games to list, and some amazing games (ahem.. Space Taxi).
Unfortunately, Atari put little effort into quality software releases for the 8bit computers, and that didn't help either. However, I did like being able to play the 5200 games on the Atari 8bit, like Pitfall 2, Rescue on Fractalus and Dreadnaught Factor. I also loved Atari's thinking when it came to hardware. 4 joystick ports on the old Atari 400/800, and the worst keyboard ever designed. 800XL has two joystick ports, and finally a good keyboard. Plus, they bring out the 600XL, which is totally useless due to its limited 16K RAM.LOL Good ol' Atari.
In the end, even though the C64 won the war, my vote still goes to Atari.

This is a bit of a biased opinion, as I still have an SX-64 hooked up, but Commodore all the way. The demo scene, the music scene, the games ... all seemed better to me.

I own both (Atari since 1984 and C-64 since 1987) and I use both still nowadays on a regular basis.
Of course, with the C-64 you always end up playing games, whilst on the XE you do the serious stuff like WP (nothing beats AtariWriter+), DTP, accounts.
Although I'm quite fond of GEOS too.

Even UK's ZZAP! magazine had to admit: Atari XL is the Rolls Royce of computers, but the C-64 is still a respectable BMW (not a 750i, mind)
Thinking about it, the C-64 was never admired for it's 'speed'! (BMW my arse). Fast Loader anyone?

As a kid, and maybe even into college, I used Atariwriter Plus on my 800XL for papers. Printouts on my 1027 looked great, but I believe instead of how many pages per minute it would do, it was like 4 minutes per page! And that's for double-spaced text.
Aaaah, good times. Nothing beats that 1050 girinding away for what seemed like days while it spell-checked a 10 page paper. I gotta get those guys out and print out some old papers! :)

Guilty as charged. Back then a PC was *way* too expensive (or so my dad would have had me believe :) ).
I have to admit my opinion is *probably* tainted, since I was an Atari guy back then, but I have both now and I'd still give the nod to the Atari. I just like it's graphics better.

I used Vizawrite on my C64 in the early 90s to write my reviews for the job I had. Plus I had a printer to get them off and then faxed through :D

Wow. That speaks volumes. So I'm not deemed worthy of posting by you because you believe I have a VG collection that doesn't currently include every system ever made. Because I use emulators to play games I like for convenience and don't feel the need to hoard/store every actual cart/system that I don't have time to play.
From your (lack of) personality, you must have a massive VG collection. I'm sure it serves as a frightening testament to the wasted, slothlike existence you call a life. Now that you know your VG collection dwarfs mine, your life has finally gained meaning. You can die happy now.
