I don't have a Neo Geo yet but may be thinking about getting one in the future. I have been looking over Ebay for a while and came across two different types of games for the Neo Geo system. AES and MVS carts. Is the Neo Geo AES system compatable with the MVS games? Do I need an adapter for the AES to play the MVS games? Would I need a Neo Geo MVS to play the MVS games? Is the quality of the AES games better or worse than the MVS?

They are essentially the same thing, but different formats. Ie, the game is the exact same, but they are for different "systems"

AES is the home cart
MVS is the arcade cartridge

You can play the MVS carts on an AES system using the convertor made by !arcade! (www.neogeousa.com) but you cannont use AES carts on the MVS.

You'd need either an arcade cabinet or a supergun & a motherboard to play MVS games (without the AES)

Since the games contained on each are the exact same, there really is no quality difference (well, AES will output with AV's on a TV as standard--you can get this modded to S-Video. MVS goes on the RGB monitors) Anyhow, the main difference is collectability I suppose. AES are generally sought after by collectors, because let's face it MVS carts are banged and dinged by arcade owners. Plus AES games have full box art, manuals, etc. MVS carts come in a brown box with move stickers, marquees, etc.

MVS = cheap, good RGB quality graphics, often come with the things you'd put on the cabinet (as a kit)

AES = expensive, has modifications for home systems and sometimes you can get posters and so on in the box

You can also play MVS games at home TV with SuperNova or Super Gun, basicly, it's a jamma board hooked with MVS slot(s), however the most practical way is getting AES with Phamton I convertor.

MVS is more expensive than AES to get into at the start. You either need to buy an expensive MVS cab, which will vary in price considering what board it contains (1 slot, 2slot, 4 slot, 6 slot)....Or you need to buy or build a Supergun, also buy a bare MVS board to plug into that. A person could easily spend over $1K just getting the equipment to play the MVS games if they don't know what they are doing.

MVS, AES...either way its expensive. The MVS carts are generally cheaper on some of the new releases(after 6 months)...but there are lots of cheap AES games, just as cheap as their MVS counterparts. There are some high ticket AES carts of course, but there are still some high price MVS games out there as well and if you want new releases of MVS games, expect to pay $750-$1500 on a new kit(right at release time)....MVS has become a collectors market just as much as AES nowadays...people really want the whole kit, with all the artwork and marquee and stuff, so don't listen to anyone who tells you MVS is for gamers and AES is for collectors. Thats bullshit.

Yeah, the cheapest way to go is MVS and vare carts. If you want them to looj purty, there's always Shock Boxes:

...but if you know what you're doing you can get into MVS cheaper than getting an AES with Phanton convertor. Trust me, a Supergun is a very easy thing to build if you have a basic understanding of electronics.

www.neogeousa.com]Phantom1[/url] October Sale:

We have a limited supply of new Phantom1 converters for sale.

While they last pricing for these units will be lowered by 25%. This affords the perfect opportunity for those of you wishing to pick-up a quality unit at a most affordable price.

Under their merchandise, they list the phantom converter for $279. Is that the list price....are they saying it's $210 now? I may just pick one up then.

Where can I get my NeoGeo AES system Modded with the good TV ourputs and such?

same place as the Phantom convertors. www.neogeousa.com

Chunky~ IIRC $279 is the list price. I think that's what they sell them for on eBay (hence, !arcade!) Haven't seen one in awhile. Maybe this is why?

So, what's a decent price to pay for an AES?
And where's a decent place to pick one up?

Here's a thread from a day or two ago discussing Neo AES prices :
