I went into my usual haunt and saw a great big plastic bag filled with Atari stuff. Inside was a Boxed Atari 2600, the box look to be in pretty good condition.. Because it was wrapped in a big plastic bag and taped shut I have no idea what condition the system was in. Also inside the bag was a wood grain Atari game holder with 21 dirty, label ripped, common 2600 games. A little tag on the bag said the system worked and had both joysticks, plus paddles and A price tag of $--------.-----.
So my poll is: What do you think *unnamed* thrift store charged for the above Atari Stuff.

It's funny, cause with thrift stores, you get price extremes in both directions. I was at this one thrift, and they had this plastic bag with 6 Sega Genesis games in it. 5 of them were sports games, and the other one was like Ren and Stimpy. They were charging like $59.99 for the bag of six. I thought to myself that this bag of games was probably worth like 10 bucks. Maybe 10 bucks. Maybe even less.
But then on the other side of the spectrum, I've seen Saturn systems with 2 controllers, power adapter, video cable for 4 bucks.

Where I am, I see both ends of the extreme every day. Last weekend at one of the VV's in my area there was a boxed SMB for NES. Price: $29.99. Beside it (and I mean RIGHT beside it) was a TG16 with all hook-ups, turbotap, 3 turbopads, and two games (pac-man and deep blue). All the stuff was boxed except one controller and the system itself. It was all hanging in one big bag. Price: $9.99. I practically ran to the cash register. And I'm gonna check on that SMB game every time I go there to see if it ever sells.

Yeah, you always see overpriced stuff, untill the one day you spot something like this: http://raccoonlad.topcities.com/art/atari3.jpg :D

Actually $3.99 is a bit steep for a 2600 cart, at least out here. It's a rare occasion I see them even with the books for more than $2.50.
Still, for what you got there, I wouldn't complain. ;)

there's a thrift store by me that has a complete atari 5200 boxed for 149.99. it seems to be in pretty godd condition, but it's been there for at least 6 months now. you would think they would lower the price by now or something. obviously no one wants to pay that much for it.

Want it? Ask to test it first. At that price it's totally reasonable to ask to test. WHEN the controllers don't work right, ask for the deep discount. I go to pawns with batteries in my pockets, and have gotten good deals on game gears and lynxes this way.
then I take them home and fix them. :)

2 years of this same thrift store:
30+ tg-16 games $1.31 each complete
a 2600 controller $9.19
loose intv/2600 games $2.62
10 loose NES toasters $3.13
5200 $99.19
they price things usually by size, and then some crazy ideas.

Lol! funny you should mention that! I once treated a 2600 as "broken" by testing it on a TV by hooking the RF cable to an AV port on a TV. The lady at the goodwill then toyed around with it for a few seconds and said, "take it if you want it." It wasn't even that great looking but it was $20 I kept in my pocket.

I was going to give it till Friday or Monday and go and take a picture. I wonder if the Atari will still be there on Monday?

I picked up an Atari 2600 from my local thrift store for $2.48, so even the lowest price on the poll seems pretty high to me.

He didn't make $xxx on that score. He made an epic score worthy of a kick ass brag, enough to encourage legions of shoppers to keep at it.
And it's a perfect example of why <<slightly>> high prices can actually be better. When the games are 35 cents, anyone picks 'em up knowing that they have to be worth at least a buck. But at $4, things can sit for a while. And then you can scoop them up without having to compete with ultracheap shoppers and flea market vendors looking for cheap kill or other resellers or whatever.

$249.99 because, why else wouldn't you have bought it? ...Unless you're not into Atari... :hmm:

as did i...
no matter what it ends up being, its still pretty silly. sort of defeats the whole purpose of a "thrift shop".... my guess would be some employee either got overhyped by the seller or overexcited from reading some antique or collectible magazine... or he just wants to keep it for himself LOL

$100 is my final guess.. The thinking being, "hell! A Gamecuby thing out now is $100 and has NO games!"

One of the Salvation Army Thrift Stores near me went through a managment change recently. Suddenly all the loose Space Invaders and SMB carts, sitting on the shelf, untouched, for YEARS, were marked up to $19.99 each and placed in the "collectibles" section.
I also noticed a slight jump in thriftstore prices right after Antiques Roadshow did that segment on Atari. Since then the Thriftstore of the Blind in my area has had ABSURD prices on all of their games, such as a Genesis 2 with one 3-button controller and a Sonic 2 cartridge for $89.98 with no hookups.
Oh how I miss the days of 40 Atari games in a giant plastic bag for $20.00. Quite sad, really. :(
I need a drink...

I voted $199, just because thats what antiques roadshow said they were worth.....boy does that mean the rest of their prices are inflated 10 fold

Ok, Ok, I was trying to get a picture to post but anyway...
Final price was $199.99. I thought it was a typo but the lady behind the counter says "Its Atari and they are collectable you know".
You guys are good. I still think the $199.99 is to high. Break up the package and sell the system by itself for $50.00 to $70.00 and I may have bought it.
