Are there any games out there, that are super common, yet extremely valuable. I guess an example would be a game like Chrono Trigger or something. I'm not sure that Chrono Trigger is super, super common, but there definitley isn't a super shortage to those carts, yet they are quite valuable.

it depends what you are going to allow as Super super common. I mean, there is never any lack of copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun or Magic Knight Rayearth on eBay, but they still always sell for bucketloads. Now people will say (maybe rightly) that these games are not super super common, but they are not exactly rare either.

At the end of the day, price of retro items is almost entirely a function of supply and demand. For the titles I mentioned, the demand is incredibly high, so the price goes up disproportionately to the actual supply. However, if the supply of a game is stupendously high, then it is unlikely that there will be ever be enough demand from the relatively small retro collectoring community to push the price up.

One thing about the games you mentioned, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radian Silvergun and Magic Knight Rayearth. You can't get these games at a GameStop or a GameCrazy, so I don't think you could classify them as Super Common.

The reason that you never see a shortage of Panzer Dragoon Saga , Radian Silvergun and Magic Knight Rayearth on Ebay, is because people fork over the huge bucks for them, then they back them up to a CD-R, then they re-sell them. So that is why they are constantly turning up on Ebizzle.

Contra on the NES sells at Gamestop for $14, and some sucker ALWAYS buys it.

If it's super common, that alone would decrease it's value, wouldn't it? :hmm: Rare=valuable; common=drink coaster

Megaman 1-6 for NES is the same way.

Some super common games are valuable. Rarity is not the only determining factor for value. Demand and popularity can be just as important. Right now the best examples of common games, with a value that is disproportionate to rarity, would be the NES mega mans and many of the SNES rpg's.

Well, what I mean is, "What game is so good, that even though it is as common as dirt, it still fetches pretty dang high prices"?

Like Donkey Kong Country. Although I don't think that Donkey Kong Country's price is too high, still it's a little higher than it should be. You go to GameStop or GameCrazy, and they are selling DKC for like $7.99 for a loose cart. And on Ebay, people are getting like 5 bucks with 3 bucks shipping, for a grand total of 8 bucks. Kinda expensive for a super, super common game. Especially from a loose cart standpoint.

On the contrary, there are some not-so-common games that are still relatively cheap.

I think there are some PSX shooters that are not only harder to find than RS, Sengoku Blade, Hyper Duel, but also cost a fraction of the cost.

Games at Gamestop always sell for at least 10 bucks if they are half way fun, especially Mega Man games and final fantasy (NES). These are always priced to high.

I'd gladly pay $14 each all day for copies Mega Man 1 and 6 :) They sell for way more most of the time. I've seen them go for $30+ each cart only on the 'Bay. I'd say that MM1 and MM6 are at least uncommon. MM5 is also fairly hard to find. 2 and 3 are common though.

I would say Tecmo Super Bowl is common but can fetch a good price. I have sold many of them between $10-$20 cart only. It is just a fun game that people remember playing in the day and want to recapture that fun again.

? Never heard of this.. there are whole web communities based on Sega CD and Sega Saturn ISO game trading. Last I checked there were even several communities on several IRC networks trading Saturn images. Why would anyone spend $100's of dollars just to burn a copy when a web search will bring up sources.

Now try to find an image of Saturn Zork import.. and you would be buggered. lol

From running the GOAT Store, I've got a few perspectives to toss in here:

A great super-common game can still fetch high prices: Someone mentioned Donkey Kong Country before. Another one just like it is Super Mario World. I've seen that game selling for $15.00 at places, and it doesn't sit around long!

Alien Vs. Predator for the Jaguar is perhaps the most common or second most common cartridge after Cybermorph, but people will pay $40 for a loose copy and $60 for a used in box one.

Probably a year ago I went searching for another copy of Tetris for the GameBoy. It was still around $10.00 / copy.

That having been said, there are a lot of game systems that seem to be just about right when it comes to pricing their common games dirt cheap. The NES and the 2600 are priced pretty much correctly strictly based on rarity. So is the N64 currently.

And for the comment above about always getting some sucker to pay $14.00 for Contra, in a way you are right -- it isn't that rare of a game where it should demand a $14.00 price tag, but it is in demand that much. Last time the GOAT Store got a copy of Contra in, I think we put it up for $15.00 and it had sold within 48 hours. And for the couple hundred NES games we currently have in stock, we don't have any copies of it right now. If a game becomes highly sought after, it definitely ups it's rarity and can command the prices like that.
