I just bought a 3do system off of ebay for 45.00, is that a good price? It came with a new controller and only the ac cord. No video cables though, I was wondering if the 3do has special video cables it used like the n64 or playstation or could just use regular cords like on a dvd player? Also, I would like to know what are the best games for the system is, and where is the best place to buy them. Thanks!

Regular vid cords like a VCR or DVD player. The FZ-1 from panasonic has built in S-vid jack too. Very sweet.
games? I rarely see 3DO games in the wild. Nice thing about the 3DO, is it will play CDR's without a mod. So, for example I found a scratched up copy of Road and Track Need for Speed for the system. The 3DO coudn't read it, but my CD burner could. I made a copy and it works great. A good reason to make a backup of your game I say!
Gex
Samurai Showdown
Road Rash
DP should come along soon and post a link to the top twenty list for you.
Have Fun!

Yeah, that's about what I paid for my 3DO -- an older Panasonic FZ-1 (the front loading model). I also got a original controller and a save game management program on CD (allows you to do a lot more with the limited RAM of the thing.)
My personal favorites on the system are Twisted, Psychic Detective, Star Control II, Lucienes Quest, and Lost Eden. The system also has one of the best versions of Night Trap and Rebel Assault on it, as well as Alone in the Dark 1 and 2.
Oh, and Super Wing Commander and Wing Commander III ROCK. :-P

In a puff of fire and brimstone, "DP" appears.
The 3DO is a fun system to collect for. It doesn't have a tremendously good library of games, but it does have lots of exclusive titles and enough to make for a solid top 20 list:

The complete 3DO list can be found here: http://www.digitpress.com/lists.htm
One other thing I should mention - you can play imports on your 3DO without any mods or devices. There are some really cool games from Japan, I'm in the process of working on details but keep your eyes on the screen shots section of this site, I'm adding 3DO import screens as I merrily play along :)
Enjoy your new system!

Welcome to 3DO!
If you like party/board games like You Don't Know Jack, I highly recommend both Twisted and Zhagnost: The Peoples Party.
Road Rash is a must have and I like the Need For Speed version on the 3DO a lot too (the graphics are clunky by todays standards, but it has a realistic sense of speed and an great replay feature: just show me the interesting parts...)
Shockwave is worth getting for the cheap "labels" on the pilot helmets alone!
Cheers,
Ben

I second Sothy on SC2...it's a MUST have for the 3D0. I also highly recommend Icebreaker and Hell (though Hell is a bit slow).

also wasn't Alone in the Dark for 3do? i remember playing it on demo at the store years ago, and even in a fully lit store that opening part scared the pants off me!

Totally with you on Icebreaker, an underrated action/puzzle classic, and totally NOT with you on Hell, a wretched excuse for a graphic adventure. Painful dialogue, atrocious voice acting. There's even at least one location with a missing item description, which was one of the most blatant bugs I'd ever seen in a console game at the time.

Zach, didn't you write those two "3DO Secrets" books?

Zach, didn't you write those two "3DO Secrets" books?
Yep. I wrote a complete walkthrough of Hell for "3DO Games Secrets: Book Two," which left me with deep psychic scars. That same book also included Mazer, Shadow: War of Succession, and Way of the Warrior, three more all-time-worsts.
I sure did get a lot of mileage out of WotW, including a ridiculously large strategy guide for VideoGames -- or was it Tips & Tricks? Something like a dozen pages. The only other time I've seen that much coverage in a single issue of a videogame magazine was last year's OPM blowout of Vice City.

Yes, he did.....I have both books. They were a huge help in picking and choosing the best games of the system when I got mine last year, although they were published before some of the other games came out for the system (Lucines Quest, Doom, Snow Job, Psyhic Detective, and others.)
Oh, and Zach, you are SO right about Hell. LOL
EDIT: Oops.....he beat me to it. :D Oh well. What the heck is he doing on so late, anyway? :) I have a excuse cause I'm working. LOL

Oh, and one other interesting things about Zach's 3DO books -- the second one has a MAJOR write up, I'd say about 10-12 pages, on the M3.....the next generation 3DO-like system. Of course, it never saw the light of day. :D Might be of intrest to people who want to know about phantom consoles and what actually never came out. I can get a scan done if you like.

I would've loved to do a Book Three, but I parted company with Sandwich Islands Publishing in '96 when I moved from HI to CA. That guide was great fun, and the last non-PlayStation-related guide I did for a looong time -- 'til last year's Metroid Prime and this year's Knights of the Old Republic, if my fuzzy memory is accurate.
Maybe I should emulate Lenny Herman and crank out a few DIY guides for next year's CGE. I'm always filled with ideas (or bullshit, depending on your point of view).

I would normally scold you for cribbing from my labors, but since Sandwich Islands (which still has Book Two for sale at www.gamebooks.com) hasn't paid me royalties in years, what the hell.

Oops! Sorry, Zach, did'nt mean to offend you or anything. :embarrassed: I just mentioned that if Joe wanted a scan of the write up of the M3 from that book -- which I THOUGHT was public knowledge -- that I could do one for him. For the site, or any project he may be working on, and that's ALL I was offering to copy. (All that info IS commonly known and was published in other places at the time, right?)
You did a guide for Metroid Prime? I totally missed that one -- have to look for it. I just bought the Prima two for one guide (Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion) to save money. (And I actually used the book more for MF -- go figure! :) )

Not offended at all, just giving you grief. As I recall, all that M2 info (not M3, you silly) was taken straight from press releases, so I'm surprised it's not already somewhere on the Web.

I did a rush-job section on the NES Metroid for Versus Books' Metroid Prime guide. Unfortunately, they left out all of my peripheral chapters and only ran the walkthrough, which greatly suffers because it frequently refers to info that isn't in the book. This was at the end of Versus' run, and they were so busy trying to keep the company solvent that they couldn't be bothered to proofread their own guides. Sigh.

Where? WHERE?! MUST HAVE PICTURES!!!
That reminds me. I still have to make arrangements with that one guy to get those 3DO import discs. Sorry I've been dragging my feet on this for a while, but I've been broke. :P
