so i'm new to collecting NES carts, had about 25 from when i was a kid, now i have expanded my collection to about 40....nothing serious, just want every game i wanted as a kid, i don't require manuals or boxes, just casual collecting
i picked up a few at my local gamestop, good prices, but a bit of a poor selection
so i went by 2 different eb games, i was amazed by their selection, as far as games i played/wanted as a kid, they pretty much had it covered...but OMG the freaking prices...they are asking $9.99 for a loose SMB cart (and they have like 15 of them) $20 for a metriod cart (which i have from a kid, but STILL), and i'm thinking to myself as i look through them that NONE of them are rare, i could name several kids that owned them when i was younger
they had a couple for $5 that i wanted (skate or die was one of them) but i was so pissed at the prices, i just walked out shaking my head, not like $5 for skate or die is a great price anyways.
oh yeah, i had just won Castlevania 3 off ebay for $3.25, they had it for $20 or $25, that was the last straw, i'm never stepping foot into that store again.
and why the hell can i not find Super Mario World for snes for less than $7 !?!

I have my own reasons for never entering an EB Games again:

I actually wish that my EB actually carried anything pre playstation 1. They cleared out all of their NES games a long time ago, even if they were for way more than the going rate.

Check out all your local thrift stores and pawn shops. I don't think I've EVER done a thrift store run without seeing seeing at least one copy of Super Mario World.

My EB continues to be an excellent source of cheap, quality, used PC games.
(Granted, they could organize things a little better. It would be great if there was a nice little price list on the counter, so I wouldn't have to sit down on the floor and slowly flip through the racks. Also, the used games that get a price of $2.99 are simply labelled "Close Combat", which isn't so bad, except when they slap that on an empty jewel case with no inserts.
But why should I complain? They're still great prices.)

And this is the very reason that these games command such a high price at these stores. Because people had them as a kid, they want to get them back, and many people are willing to pay that price for the games. EB doesn't care what's rare, they care what sells, and the price it sells at. If they can still get $20 for a loose Metroid cart, let them. You do have the choice to go elsewhere.
Damn these stores for trying to keep themselves in business...
As for my part...I'll say the same thing I've said every 2.3 days when one of these threads come up...I have always enjoyed the EBGames and Gamestop experiences...EB Games in particular are very fine sources for used games in my area...the EB stores in malls have not been great recently...but the ones in strip malls have been golden especially...

All the EB Games stores I've been to in Montreal carry only recent (ie. Dreamcast/PS1 and up) games. The only old games I've seen there are Game Boy games. As for anything else from the 8- or 16-bit gens, forget it. They just don't sell that.
There's Microserv, but they only sell post-crash games (forget it when it comes to Atari/Coleco/Intellivision games!) and even then, their selection of NES games is less than stellar (it isn't nearly as bad when it comes to SNES games).

Yeah i hear you, like others have said before, this happens all the time.
If you are looking for NES games I reccomend buying lots of 20 or so off of ebay or I have a couple hundred NES games for sale $3 each but if you are interested I have been giving deals for the more you buy.

I picked up a metroid for $6 the other day, if you did want it, I'd sell it to you for $6
thrifts and pawns are good places to hit, but even some of those are getting very expensive.

I got back into NES collecting just recently as I had all the roms on 2 seperate discs one complete us and one complete japanese disc for play on the dc, but I figure I would buy whenever I could get good deals. I picked up 9 nes games at gamestop for 6 bucks at their by 2 get one sale. So there can be deals had. But remember nostalgia = money at most stores , so while you may pay more for ninja gaiden, metroid etc but you can get deals on other carts. I found a place that gives manuals away free, so I found most of mine I jsut need boxes:)

Scooter pretty much nailed it. Retrogaming has thundered back and some businesses are trying to jump on that bandwagon. Sometimes EB has a good retro deal that rivals Ebay auctions (when you list prices off of Ebay, don't forget to include shipping in the cost). Sometimes they don't. But when they price something that you feel isn't worth it, don't hate them because they want to stay in business. To charge the same prices as you'd see on Ebay or garage sales would be suicide and no one would want to trade stuff in if the value was even less due to "competition". However, your shopping rituals are your own, or as Bobby Brown said "It's [your] perogative"[insert dancers and bad hair cut here] :D
