from SNK Neo Geo's new consumer website:
http://www.snkneogeousaconsumer.com/consumer/gba.shtml
100 Metal Slug E-Reader cards, allowing you to obtain extra skills and weaponry. It'll keep track of all your rescued hostages (special ending for a 100% perhaps?)... mmm.
So, who else is getting this?

Metal Slug rocks, and so will this one.
I wonder if one of the cards will let you play as Mars People LOL
Seriously though, Ralf and Clark would be awesome to see in a Slug games, with their goofy art style.

Hopefully the first of many.

This is. the best. since Sega Ages.

Oh, you mean this guy is from Metal Slug? Never knew that. :embarrassed:
I just liked him cause in the original form he was shooting AND chugging down what looked like beer -- thought ti was funny. LOL
Now I leave him cause he shoots, which is what I feel like doing to some of the idiots on the forum sometimes. :)
I don't have a Neo Geo or a Neo Geo Pocket, but if any of the games in the series came out for another system, I'll check it out. Looks like a Contra-esque game.

His name is Marco, and his full name is Marchrius Dennis Rossi. The animation from the MS series is great. My favorite one is when you crisp an enemy soldier with the flamethrower. LOL
Metal Slug plays almost exactly like Contra. That's just as far as bare bones gamplay goes, but it is also very different from Contra. However, the fact that they both kick ass is something they have in common. :rocker:
And no shooting me. I shoot back. :rockets:

That game rocks. On base, it's Metal Slug 2. But there's a lot that would be different enough to warrant a separate purchase. Besides, Metal Slug 2 never came out on anything besides the Neo Geo. I'd pick it up if I were you. So far, it's the only MS game released on another console besides the Neo Geo in America.
And we had BETTER get MS3 on the PS2... :grrr:

I checked the SNK site and it states "Newly introduced, METAL SLUGŪ E-cards". I have a feeling it is more like the Madden cards in that they are built in to the game and unlockable and has nothing to do with the E-Reader. Nintendo normally refers to the E Reader cards as either "E-Reader Cards" or by adding "-e" to the end of the title (ie Mario Party-e cards) and not as E-Cards as SNK did. there is also no mention of E-Reader options on the site or in the trademark line at the bottom of the page. While the idea of E-Reader support sounds cool, I don't think this is the case here.

I'm leaning towards in-game unlockable content also. Virtually all of SNK portable games on the NGPC had unlockables and quite a few used cards, scrolls, etc. In fact, I'd prefer it that way: cards revealed for meeting various criteria.

I second that. When I first got the import MSX, it floored me. The US release is almost exactly the same, except for some reason all the blood was replaced with sweat. If you can get past that, then you should definitely look into it... and if you liked Contra at all, chances are you will like Metal Slug.

I third it. I actually like the PSone port of Metal Slug X better than the Neo original, thanks to the extra modes in the PlayStation version.

There's a Combat School, where you try to finish a level as fast as you can, or see how far you can get with one life. You've also got the "Another Mission" mode, which has a load of special stages. One requires you to protect a baby as it crawls through a battle, and another has you crossing the screen by leaping from one oncoming missile to another.
If you're a Metal Slug freak, the PlayStation port of X and the PS2 edition of 3 are worth buying just for the extras.

Just about everything else :D
As for the e-Reader cards, here's essentially what I think. I believe an e-Reader card has enough space for an ingame sprite of a weapon, maybe even of all its animation (especially if flames and other things are common effects shared between weapons and stored on the game cartridge; I doubt every weapon will have its own idling animation or reload like the pistol from the arcade games). I also think that the weapon's specific characteristics could easily be saved on the card (firing rate, reload times, damage per shot etc.) and converting this data should prove relatively simple.
I wonder, though, if something will stay unlocked for good on the cart (until the battery dies) once you've scanned it? That seems like the best way of doing things and is a reason to suspect that all the card's data would just be an encrypted sequence to ensure that cards wouldn't be easily faked.

God I hope so. I know some people really like their e-reader, and that's cool, whatever. But, as I've said about a million times, when I buy a game, GIVE ME ALL THE DAMN FEATURES, DON'T MAKE ME "EARN" THEM THROUGH UNLOCKING OR FORCE ME TO BUY A WORTHLESS PERIFERIAL FOR THIS ONE GAME!!!
Sorry for the caps, but some people see the e-reader as coolest thing since sliced bread, I see it as a blatant cash run.

You know, I'd say that the Contra titles (or at least Contra III and Hard Corps) have slightly better level design than Metal Slug. Both series use one-hit kills, but Slug has more of the arcade in it, and there are some cases where it's impossible to avoid dying. While Contra's almost as hard, its programming is tighter and easier to survive once you learn it. Metal Slug has far looser control, especially when it comes to jumping.

Heh, I'm being unconciously quite biased towards graphics again. Yes, the MS games usually are very straightforward, but that's certainly part of the charm of it. Contra's always been better suited for a console, but Metal Slug's fights tend to be much more dramatic (if drawn out). Contra sometimes has been a bit ridiculous with the level design, but on the whole after the original (grr Tundra level) they got it worked out.
For myself, Super Contra and Operation C had just the right amount of complexity and difficulty.

The E-Reader is crap .. you get a set of cards for a 16K ROM file. Then, you scan them in, one by one, and then it says OOPS! YOU FUCKED UP! and makes you start over. The cards take over 15 tries each to get to work .. and once you finish with that, you get a horrible game or some miniscule features you could hack into the game with a hex editor and flash set anyway. If you want all the thrills of performing a 68k Macintosh Software Installation Disk Swap from Hell, and like being ripped off by a corporation who (despite the quality of their OTHER products) just wants to prey off consumers like a parasite, then by ALL means get the e-reader. ;)

I was going to buy the E-reader sololy for Super Mario Advance 4: SMB3, but now it looks as though there is another reason!
Now Here is what they SHOULD do with the E-reader.
