I've only played NHL 2K2, which I got very recently, but I have to say one thing. Best HOCKEY ENGINE ever in a video game. Totally floors NHL 2003 (which is the only recent EA hockey I've played since '98, and I've heard this was a bad year, but still...).
(regarding 2K2) Finally a game that focuses on puck possession and passing rather than breakaway after breakaway which is totally unreliastic from a hockey perspective!

I've got both. I enjoy 2K, but 2K2 is certainly the better of the two. It's like a cleaned up, more detailed version of 2K, with more up-to-date rosters, etc. They're both dirt-cheap now, so you can't really go wrong either way, but I'd say 2K2 is the superior game by a long shot.
NHL 94 might beat it, though... ;)

NHL2k2 is better. By far. You know, I played NHL2k3 on the Gamecube and (other than some graphic embelishments such as better faces) I found no reason to upgrade from good old Dreamcast 2k2.
I believe Black Box did NHL2k but didn't really have the resources to do a great job. Sega skipped the next iteration and came out with 2k2 which was primarily done by a different team, I forget which.
NHL2k2 is much better once you tweak the sound options. The default settings are actually pretty bad IMHO. Turn the frequency of play and color commentary down to minimum and crank up the rink sounds. The game comes more to life. I also appreciate the challenge of the game and its unique way of making you work the puck. Oh, and best ice I'd ever seen up to that point!
