I rarely do so. The last game I rented was GTA: VC. It rocked. I'll get it someday. :rocker:

I read reviews and will rarely - if ever - buy a game without reading a review. Once or twice I have bought a game, gone home & left it unopened, read the review, and then decided whether or not I was going to keep it or return it based on that review. I do that because it's the last one left in the store or it's a game I've heard was hard-to-find, etc.

I'm the same way. I have gotten screwed so many times by greedy developers simply pushing defective, unifinished, or boring games simply to make a buck. Therefore I always read reviews before I buy and only rent a game if I have no intention of buying it.

I rarely rent first. Usually read a variety of reviews.

I've never rented a game. I've played a couple rents at a friend's house (back in 1999 or so) but that's all.

Yeah, I 'rent' from the internet.

I rent here and there (free rentals 'cause I'm a soul sucking employee), but I mostly buy if the reviews are interesting, videos from IGN and depending on the price. There are just some games I know I'm gonna love (Zelda, Metroid, Panzer Dragoon etc.) so I just go out and buy 'em.

I follow reviews mainly, and then, if I think that the game will be cool, but EMG's review crew says it sucks, then I will decide myself and rent it.

EGM hasn't failed me yet! :)

I usually take EGM's reviews with a grain of salt. My gaming tastes are quite different from theirs, so I guess I have a reason to be suspicious of what they say.

Ditto.

I limit my game purchasing to only a select few new titles per year, usually games that I feel are going to be very good - usually because they're part of a continuing series. Aside from Castlevania: LoI, R-Type Final, Metal Slug 3 and Gradius V, I can't think of a single brand new game that I'm going to be buying anytime soon. I don't rent very much either, simply because I'm either not interested in the games available or I don't have the cash.

That reminds me: LoI is coming out this week!!! I can tell you that I'm not renting it first. :-P

I almost always rent games before I buy them. I'd rather Spend $5 to find out if the game is not for me than $50.

Plus there are a lot of times I'll just make it through the game in the 2 days I have it. At $5 a pop I could play 10 games to death, and if I like the game enough to play it more than that I can go down and by it. There will be times that I rent a game I just wanted to play on the weekend, then it will turn out I liked it so much I'll go and buy it.

Game Demos help alot but you don't know for sure how long and deep those games are from the demos. Sometimes an idea that looks great on a 10 min demo grows old when you've played it a few hours. So its good to playtest :) the real thing

There are still games I'll buy without renting, like most Final Fantasy games.

I don't limit myself to a few titles a year - I usually buy quite a few games...but that's still a reason (maybe even a better one) to read those reviews. I don't follow EGM (haven't for a long time), but Gamespot and Gamespy both seem to have a decent handle on things. The only point on which I differ somewhat from their opinions is the topic of MMOGs - they all had pretty rosy reviews of these types of games for a while, but recently Gamespy has panned Star Wars Galaxies (and rightly so, from what I read) and it looks like those rose-colored glasses might be coming off somewhat (but not enough). I can pretty much trust that when something gets a 6-7 it's a fairly good game, when it gets an 8 or 9 it's something that is going to be really fun if you enjoy that type of game, and if it's above 9 that it is probably a gaming experience the likes of which will rarely be seen (and everything below a 6 isn't worth getting at all).

Yeah that was a bad game they should have called it UO in space, thats all it really was.

I usually wait till the game is selling for $5 or so, so it costs the same to rent as to just buy it.

I usually play a game that i am on the fence about. BUt franchises i dig or developers i like i usually buy. THe best guide for gaming has been gone for quite sometime now (GameFan RIP). Reviews usually don't influence me (most gaming publications and websites suck) but every once in a while I will pick up a game that gets a positive review from Dave Halverson currently of PLay magazine fame and the founder of gamefan and gamers republic. I wish there was a publication or website as good as gamefan (to me people) but I dont think that is ever going to happen until i finish mine!

It depends on the title. For instance, I know Im going to go out and get socom 2 the day it comes out without renting it first. Most games I rent first because I dont want to kick out $50.00 for a game and it's full of bugs like Ghost Recon on the ps2. That's why im going to rent the new Ghost Recon game called "Jungle Storm" first before I decide to spend any real dough on it.

Usually if I see a game I like I'll get it. I don't rent too many games.... most of the games I buy are like Mario, Zelda, etc. The games that I buy are because I like most of the games that they put out.
