I HATE emulators, I'm pretty damn computer savvy, I mod and build my own PC's with the newest and best this and that, EL lighting, cold cathose tubes, and PSU cable sleeves galore, but emulation software just PISSES ME OFF.
That aside, with a P4 2.8ghz, which newest MAME do I get? The win32 binary optimized for pentium pro?
I'm trying to get some emulators re-installed on my PC, and Mame is the first up.

MAME 32 Plus should do the job. It's got features you won't find in the standard versions of MAME, plus MAME 32's brilliantly designed user interface. You shouldn't really need an optimized version of MAME since your computer is so fast. Besides, I haven't noticed a tremendous increase in speed while using the FastMAME build. When I play Daraku Tenshi (The Fallen Angels), I find it's much more effective to just use an earlier version of MAME, where the emulation for the game is tighter.

Any quick tips on where to get MAME 32 Plus? I don't do so good with the binary, source, dos, windows, windows plus, windows 32 options. I can't understand why these damn sites can't have a good "click here for the program link for windows 95+" link. It's not friggin rocket science, but they insist on turning it into rocket science

Heh, if you want to really turn your emulation experience into a frustrating and painful ordeal, give Emulaxian a try. Most emulator frontends are designed to make emulators easier to use... Emulaxian does the exact opposite.
Anyway, you may be able to find what you're looking for on Zophar's Domain (www.zophar.net)... that's where I get all my emulators. The official MAME32 Plus! site is practically worthless... you have to sign up for GameSpy's file sharing service to get anything, and even then you'll have to wait for your downloads unless you've paid for the premium service. Nuts to that! I'll get the file for free elsewhere, and a whole lot faster, too.

I'm using MAME32 plus ver. 0.76. That's pretty much the best one right now, IMHO.

For your system... Mame32. No question about it. Nice and easy. Unzip. Put roms into the "roms" directory. How simple can you get? You can tweak the options later ;)
