This game was so tough, and I wasnt good enough to finish it when I was a kid...not 12 years later im ready to kick some ass LOL
Are there any guides or walkthroughs? The game is so huge I have no idea where to go...

Own it, love it. There was a guide in the old Nintendo Players Guide, but these days you might want to check GameFaqs for a walkthrough.

Rygar. That game is a classic. The arcade is decent, but I prefer the adventure route the Nes one took. The Official Nintendo Player's Guide book had a good Rygar walkthrough that covered the entire game with a few maps. But that book might be a bit hard to get a hold of, so I guess you should check Gamefaqs.
I also recommend you take the time to level up in that game. A great place to gain experience is fighting those robot enemies in the Lapis area.

I have a Nintendo's Player Guide I'd like to sell. Good condition. If you want it, send me a PM.

Yep, I played it, it's a great game, worthwhile playing still today.
The old NES Players guide is an option, but there was also a very good walkthrough in a recent GameInformer, January 2003, vol. 117, p.147-149 (from my notes, I still have to copy the pages).

I was working on a pictorial walkthrough on my website a long time ago (including few cool things you are not going to read in any other FAQ/Walkthrough available!) I may need to finish it one day...

How does everybody think the Master System version compares to the NES? I've got a copy of the SMS version, by the way. Should put up my scan of the cover sometime :)

What You Say?
There's a Mark III version of Rygar (actual port of the arcade game), but it was never released outside of Japan.

Ah...men Brother Sorry Racoon, I gave the system a chance, I can't do it. I've so far owned 30 SMS games, and am keeping the 5 that are remotely playable. Still looking for more, and yes i know about the imports, i may have to stray that way.

Ah, Rygar. Like Bionic Commando and Ninja Gaiden, it was actually improved by the fact that it was unable (or unwilling) to emulate its arcade counterpart. The Action/RPG elements are quite fun, the mix of side-scrolling levels and overhead scenes works great, and it's a real challenge at times. And though there aren't many secrets, that mirror-image castle in the final stage was quite cool for its day.
The arcade version's decent, but it just drags on and on and on, to the point where you're fighting your own boredom as much as the enemies. Even perfect ports of the game have this problem.

You bet your Diskarmor I own it. I once beat it without dying at all. If I can do that with a game, then I love it dearly. :D
Oh, and I used the NP guide. That book is some great stuff, and it also has some wackadoo Engrish! The most memorable instances is in the section of Pro Wrestling. LOL
But back on the point, Rygar kicks ass. It's in what I refer to as the Tecmo Triad. Rygar, Tecmo Bowl, and Ninja Gaiden. Needless, to say, Tecmo forever. :rocker:

I tried Rygar in Meka once. It seemed pretty sloppy the way Rygar attacked in that game. A lot of times you would hit an enemy but the hit wouldn't register. Made the game annoying to play.

Don't forget the Rygar on the Atari Lynx. :P

I don't recall that version being all that good because the sprites were so big it was hard to move and avoid hits.

I beat the NES Rygar back in college (1989 ish). My buddy and I pulled an all nighter to beat it. I remember seeing the sun come up and thinking "we really have to beat the game now that we came this far".

Rygar was -- hell, IS -- a cool game. The NES version was much better than the arcade; really just a preference of one style for another, I guess. A straight coin-op conversion would've just been lost under other fast action games like Contra, so giving Rygar adventure elements gave it new life.
The Lynx version was pretty good, but it's a lacks that crazy intensity of the arcade. Also, and it has to be said, the game is very repetitious.
I've never played the new PS2 version (I don't even own a TV set), but it looks terrific.

I quite like the PS2 game. It's extremely good - in fact, I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best PS2 games I've played.

I've never played it (but I finally have a copy in the mail right now). but I remember as a kid (I was probably like 10) and my neighbor (who was in college) said he just got this awsome game that I really needed to see. I watched him play the game start to finish in one sitting. He definitely didnt make it look tough, but it did take the entire day.

Here's reaching back for a REALLY old bump. I know I dig this game out every so often and I love it. However, every time I do, I keep trying to find different ways to beat it.
Just recently, I used the lapis -> floating castle warp and then leveled myself up enough in that room before the boss to be able to run in and obliterate him within 10 hits.
I'm also trying to figure out all the gaps I can cross without the use of the crossbow/pulley.
Who else has pulled this game out recently?

The last time I played this was in the late 90s. It was also the only time I ever paused a game and left it on overnight, I believe. I don't remember much about it anymore, but I managed to get to the flute (?) part, but I could not get past it. I remember it being a lot of fun up to that point.
I remember almost beating it in when I was 17 or so but I couldn't figure out what to do at the end, so I turned it off out of frustration. I did however pull it out a few months ago and beat it within 2 hours or so, needless to say it wasn't as intimidating 6 years later.

I originally rented the game back in the day, and couldn't finish it. But I liked it so much that I rented it a week later and plowed through to the end. Started at 7pm and ended at 1am, on the dot. I was always impressed by the music and the graphics. But once I finally finished it, it was the ending that impressed me the most. Up until then, I hadn't seen a game with such a decent ending, just the occasional "Congraturation! You are winner!" type of thing. I felt like I had really accomplished something. I haven't played the game since the late '80s. I bought a copy at a flea market a couple of years ago, but I can't find a working NES to play it on, not even a clone console. Maybe it's just my bad luck with Nintendo hardware.
That game used to always kick my ass as a child. :( To this day I've never finished it, though I haven't played it in probably 5+ years or so. I'll have to get around to beating it eventually.

I will always love this game. It's pretty incredible for such an early release. It used to take me 4 or 5 hours to lay throguh the game. I whipped it out for the first time in a decade and flew through it in 2 hours. I couldn't believe it!

Well, I already sung its praises in this very thread, but I think it deserve another round. I haven't played it in a while, but it stands out as one of the best action/adventure titles for the NES, as well as yet another example of trumping the arcade version. As a matter of fact... it's funny. The NES versions of the "Tecmo Three" that I mentioned earlier in this thread (Rygar, Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Bowl) all got their starts in the arcade, and those game were okay. However, their NES renditions totally trumped the arcade originals! Am I the only one who finds that odd? It's like Tecmo was destined primarily for console greatness!
Anyhoo, Rygar rules, and I should give it another playthrough. In the meantime, guess I'll go do the obligatory plug for the article I wrote about it: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/rygar/rygar.htm
... hmm... isn't there a remake for The Legendary Adventure slated to be released for the PSP? I should modify that if and when it's released.

You're thinking of the Wii. They're remaking it and calling it Rygar: The Battle of Argus and adding a new main character, as well as some other new content.

For some reason I bought Rygar when I first got the NES back then, but I don't remember why? Doubt it was the arcade version that swayed me. The game was definitely very hard, and extremely frustrating do to the controls for jumping. While the music was very well done, after a few minutes it gets very monotonous and depressing, and makes the game even harder to concentrate on. A few times I think I made it to the end and died and only the love for my NES console prevented me from throwing it out the window at that moment.

Yup, the pain of it was that all it took was one misstep trying to use the pulley in the floating castle and you were dead in a flash. Then it was good luck getting back all of your mind power and health in a reasonable amount of time without having to go back down again.

Ah, Rygar! I finished you back in the day, but there's no way I would try to now outside of using save states with an emulator.
Rygar is the very definition of a flawed classic (no passwords or saving).

On a related note, I've tried to play through the Atari Lynx version of Rygar, but every single time I attempted it my batteries went out close to the end. I never had a working AC adapter to use.

I bought the NES version of Rygar at a pawn shop about 13 years ago and still have it today! One time did I have enough meddle and patience to play the game completely through, though to my credit, I got no outside help to beat the game! I like the PS2 game as well, though I wish it had had the arcade Rygar as a bonus. Since it doesn't, though, thank goodness for Tecmo Classic Arcade! The collection isn't very good, granted, but at least it has the arcade version of Rygar!

I like rygar in it's day and i do prefer it more then to the arcade version.
Heck i played it alot back then that i could 1cc it as well.
Of corse now not so much afther i got it again for the famicom.
Still rygar for the nes is another example on how to make,it more of a experince on a console compare to the arcade version.

i remember being about 8 yrs old trying to beat this game and it was hard as heck back then. Now I can speed run it after about 18 years later. I just beat the heck out of it about 4 months ago and it's a lot easier than I remember.
The game is so full of bugs and you can exploit the hell out of em. Nothing like FLYING!! I recommend this site that all the speed runners use for Rygar: http://www.tasvideos.org/RygarTricks.html
and you can see a kick ass speedrun here: http://tasvideos.org/Movies-NES.html
there are 2 videos or ways to beat it... you can glitch beat it in about 6-10 mins or you can just do a straight run which takes me about 30 mins.
here is a quick list of my favorite glitches:
--Sit in air
right Whenever you are about to fall off something you can duck and thus sit in air. For better, cooler and easier view of this you can attach your grappling hook to anything you can climb down on, then climb up and immideatly press down. Rygar will sit in the air.
--Air walk
When the "Sit in air" trick is applied rapidly in succession, the "Air walk" trick is performed.
Whenever you walk off a cliff or ledge you can duck, right before you start to fall. This resets Rygar's gravity and thus makes the game think you stand on solid ground. Now you can walk another few pixels. Duck and repeat to walk in the air.
--Flying
This trick allows you to "fly" downards slowly. Whenever you are about to fall off of a cliff or ledge you can hit the B-button rapidly to make Rygar hit with his weapon. Due to the rapidness he will cancel any hit but still move slowly forward. Normally he stops but this allows him to move simultaniously. If done when you start to fall you will slowly decrease and eventually fall through any floor and end up at the top of the screen.
