Got the Dec. issue in the mail today. Nice articles on 2003 CGE, the creator of the VCSp, and a collecting column credited to Joe Santulli and Leonard Herman...which mentions The DP site and Guide. All of the above include some pics(including some of Joe's collection). Also a "how to" with pics on replacing dead batteries in old carts.

and a collecting column credited to Joe Santulli and Leonard Herman...

The original article, which ran about ten pages, was actually written three years ago and they've been sitting on it. If anyone is interested in reading the original, let me know and I'll send it to you.

As long as there's no problems with doing that, I'd like a copy. How can we get one?

3 YEARS?! Damn, I'd expect alot of info would be out of date by then.
...unless it was just a "fluff" story.

I'd guess that a lot of technical info (such as the battery-replacing guide) would still be accurate, and some collectors' tenets never change. Still, how often is it that a magazine waits three years before running an article?

The section on replacing the battery wasn't in the original; Joe added it for the new version. And I just checked the original copy; I wrote it in 2001; not 2000.

I got this one too. I was shocked. I thought i was reading Game Informer. GI is my favorite for the classic section, EGM finally did something right. Too bad it's only temporary.

How about the NY Times obituary of Bob Hope, which was written several years before Hope's death, and shamelessly run credited to the author who wrote it....THAT HAD BEEN DEAD FOR OVER A YEAR.

Oh, and for those of you looking for more retro games coverage, check out the British mag GamesTM (You can get it at Barnes & Noble for $9.99 or so). I got an issue and it had at least 30 pages of retro stuffs (with ads, features on "forgotten" games, etc., good stuff). Just fair warning: If I go to my B&N to pick it up and they're sold out, someone's totin' an ass kicking.

Unfortunately, yeah. It is. While some of us on staff love the retro/classic stuff, reader surveys indicate that it isn't of much interest to our end readers. So the most retro coverage we'll have in any given month is probably our new "10 Years Ago..." column and we try to do other occasional nods that we think everyone will be interested in and look at whether you're into classic gaming or not. As for holding a piece for a few years, we were just waiting for the right time and available space in which to run it. It happens more often than you'd think. It's not limited to Leonard's collecting piece.

There's an Ed Semrad "Gaming Around the World" article that never saw print for various reasons, and a couple others that have been around the office for a while but haven't made it to print yet. But they will! Eventually! (Except for "Gaming Around the World"...that'll never be for public consumption.)

It's funny, Len. They approached me to write this article about 2 months ago. I sent it to them and afterwards I was told that they were going to merge it with something you had written. I had no idea it was THAT old.

Also, when I read this, it looks like everything I sent them - so I guess your original article and mine are VERY much alike! Maybe that's what gave them the idea to combine them? I dunno.

Anyway, no biggie. At least a hundred people on this forum alone could have written that column. It's just a "primer".

It's an honor to have collaborated on something with you after all of these years!

Thanks for weighing in, just don't forget us old timers who have no time to respond to EGM surveys (because we're always here!) but have plenty of cash to spend on gaming mags.

Oh.. if only someone would create a small magazine dedicated SOLEY to covering vintage game systems and games. It would keep going because by the time it covered everything through the SNES and Genesis days, the PS and N64 would be vintage. Instant classics.

Tell me. Does it feature color photographs? If so, I would probably join. How many pages. Is there a sample issue? Is it mostly really old (Pre-NES) or is there a good mix of what I am into, i.e. NES/SMS and on up?

It's black and white, lots of pictures.

It's approximately 24 pages, bi-monthly, no advertisements.

It's an equal coverage of pre and post-NES stuff, including arcade games.

It's been running since 1991.

It's the heart of this forum, this site, and everyone involved directly with what we do; the 'zine was where it all began.

There was a color fanzine called Classic Gamer Magazine. It was well received but the color was just too expensive to print and the magazine folded after six issues.

Joe, it was an honor to be associated with you also. It would have been nicer if we worked together on it. I made one change to final piece: I removed the reference to Telegames and put in Good Deal Games.

The original piece was supposed to be a feature, rather than a one-pager. At the time retro was hot so they figured it would make a good read. I guess by the time Icompleted the article the retro fad subsided and they could no longer justify the pages that would be devoted to it. Crispin told me that they contacted you to update my article to include newer systems like the NES and the Genesis.

One thing I was happy with was the new title that EGM gave me. See below my name 8-)

Yeah "Game Scholar" is pretty nice.

I liked "Game Historian", a title given to me by VG&CE (Arnie Katz) some ten years ago now. 8-) <--also cool

I love that it's been running since 1991. You're so OLD. I remember when I was making zines, too...

I did an interview with Steve Honeywell - right up there in Sendai headquarters with Chris Johnston. Lombard. What a gas!

Got a whole BOX of zines from trades. Fanzines from all over the damn place. Wait. A. Minute.

That makes ME old, too! AAAHHHHH!

Quick, Quick - get me a controller, a backwards hat, a sarcastic sneer.... STAT!

Arnie Katz said something like... I brought a punk rock sensibility... yada yada... and something about sacred cows.

I laughed and I laughed. My hideous writing was mocked a bit, but it was still GREAT stuff.

Arnie Katz isn't DEAD or something awful like that, is he?

Seriously, I haven't heard a peep out of him in years. I see Kunkel, but where's Katz? Where's Worley?

Good Lord, Joe - tell me you've talked to these people...

If there's one thing I know, it's don't trust that Chris Johnston guy. With anything. He's shady! Especially when it comes to going to Sendai or drinking Crystal Pepsi. Nosirree. Can't trust 'em.
