Awful topic title, I know (especially before I modified it). Anyhow, I'm interested (personal, non-research reasons only) to see how everybody would look at their collecting habits.

Some of the options will overlap for anybody--just choose the option you think suits you best.

I collect by series. I'm two measly games short of completing my Bonk game collection. Where are the last two? Somewhere in Japan. I'm just waiting for them to pop up on EBay.

Which ones? Also, have you a copy of PC Denjin, the shooter game?

While I buy games of ANY system(s) I really like, I also collect games for a few systems that I truly indulge and tend to get complete game collections, these game libraries have crap to whole game list ratio of less than 25%.

IN essence, I could've easily completed 32X, Jaguar, or Sega CD collection but that would defeat the purpose of collecting.

collecting everything with the following exceptions-
*PC or computer games, unless its an 8 bit cart game
*collecting but not actively pursuing playstation and other modern titles, waiting until they get old and cheap.
*no post 1985 LCD handhelds, except game and watch
*no edu-games, as in no TI-99 learning games or Pico titles etc.
*space and cash will keep my arcade collection nice and small
*import titles only by chance finds

Those of you who have been here for awhile know my answer to this already, I collect everything and anything video game related, though I do "concentrate" on a system at a time and try to complete the ones I'm closest to. I'm just about done collecting for 3DO after scoring masses of imports, a Sanyo TRY system, the Decathlon prototype,, and the dealer demo binder... next up is Saturn for me.

Aaah! Everybody, guard your copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga!

Yeah, I figured you'd post that.

On the topic of my poll...I know there's no "Other" option (I originally intended to have it, but forgot to include it) and I could've included some other useless options. 10 is by far good enough; it looks like that's enough to give people some real choices and spread out the votes, but not too many to deal with.

Personally, I go with option #1, though I fit in other categories as well. There really aren't many games I refuse to allow in my collection, but I really don't want to buy a bunch of commons and bad games. For example, I generally will try to buy every Phantasy Star game but I won't touch Phantasy Star III, certainly not the Genesis version. Maybe the Japanese someday for the cover art. Of that series, I value the Sega Ages remakes and straightforward Master System/Mega Drive RPGs over the Game Gear and newer GameCube releases. I also value my space to some extent--I'm going to have enough trouble finding places for those 48 x68000 games @_@

Predominantly, I collect games I like and want to play.

Also, I try to get what are considered the cream of the crop of titles for each console.

Currently, my main focus is on Sega Mega CD, Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast - but I'm always grabbing stuff for other consoles too.

Ah, where's John Madden when you need him?

"Usually, the choice with the most votes wins the poll."

He could have a fun time pointing out how it's amazing that so many people voted for "by system" whereas half that number voted for fun games (at last count, 3 votes compared to By System's 6). I thought Buttasuperb and the other Neo Geo/CPS 2 fans out here would justify my "Arcade stuff" option, but I'm going to give that more time.

"He was waiting for somebody to vote and... whap! He got voted!"

I'm with Joe. I collect for most systems but tend to focus on one or two at a time as my fancy strikes. Hell, sometimes it rotates on a weekly basis... right now I'm working on Saturn, N64, and Odyssey2.

I'm with dreamcaster, I collect games that I enjoy playing. However, I may stray the course for the rarest of rares...that is if I find them cheap enough. :D

as my collection is based almost soley on thrift and flea market finds i cant focus on one system at a time really. i'm kinda like a beachcomber that way. i'm pretty close on some systems (ody2, SMS, 5200, 7800 etc..) but i wont throw down big bucks on ebay just to be complete. i'm more likely to find something rare to trade and try and complete my collections that way.

funny how this hobby has a way of expanding on you, when i started out i hadnt even heard of half the systems i'm currently collecting for.

I guess bottom line is price. When I see a game, any game at less than $1.00, I pick it up. I also forget what games I have and end up with 2 or more copies of said game. But I feel that any game in my collection is one less game that might get pitched into the dump., yes this includes all misfit Combats and Duck hunts!

I principally collect PAL Sega stuff and am concentrating on Master System & Megadrive libraries, which should keep me preoccupied for a while :)

I'll buy anything else that's cheap and hang on to the stuff I like, and eBay/trade the rest.
Oh, and I'm thinking about purging all my handhelds, since they never get used.

I collect by system. I'm currently trying to get all US released TurboDuo games, then I'm moving on the all US Neo Geo home carts. I may pick up a fer Japanese titles just for giggles.

Voted..

Every game ever made..

I have games that I don't even know what they are for..

If it's a Video game I buy it..and if it's cheap enough at a garage sale or flea market I pick it up for the heck of it...
I'll figure out what's it for later.. :)

Odd, every game that had 1 vote now has two, yet the two categories that had zero votes earlier still are totally unpopular (Imports and Wierd things, I mean come on, who doesn't like wierd things? Is there something wrong with wierd imported things unless they're animal, vegetable or mineral? I'm the very model of a modern major gamer).

I like to say everything, but I do have a few goals. Now that I have the ability to I want to complete:

NGPC
Neo Geo MVS (eventually possible since it looks like in 3 years max Atomisware will be SNK's new hardware of choice :( )
Turbo Grafx-16

These will be my main focuses, and if/when they're completed I'll think of other systems to complete.

However if I see a game I like, I'm grabbing it. I'm a "I don't collect, I play" as a high second.

It's "only games I like" for me. The only possible exception to this: I might buy and play a game that isn't necessarily my favorite but that has very interesting and / or unique gameplay mechanics. Black & White, for instance, isn't necessarily my favorite game but it's definitely unique and interesting in many ways, so I picked it up. It was also only $10 or so... :)

My whole apartment is completely full of game related material. Not good for picking up the ladies but who needs em I have my games.

I went with weird stuff, due to my console copiers and some of the other stuff I have lying around here.

For the most part, I collect "systems I used to own" and games for those systems. For example, since I had an Atari 2600 as a kid, I have an Atari 2600 collection now. My neighbor had a 5200, so I have one of those. I don't know anyone who owned a 7800 personally, and so I don't have one now nor do I have any interest in picking one up. The only things I'm looking for right now are a Franklin Ace 1000 (old Apple clone I used to own) and a TRS-80 III. I pretty much have one of everything else I used to own.

And then there's those pesky seven arcade cabinets ...

It depends on the flea market I go to...there are three good flea markets about an hour from me...one is great for newer games, one is good for NES, and one is (oddly) very good for Intellivision and Atari 5200...

I just wish I could get to them more regularly...:(

I basically collect ALL the games I want, which is plenty. IMO there's no point in me buying a game if I really don't want it. As in: I don't think I'd actually enjoy playing it. I have plenty of games I haven't even opened yet, but they're all games I want, and will eventually play at some point. I've got about 320-330 now, and it's scary to think that those are just the games I want... Besides, I'm broke as it is...

I collect mostly by price, but I've found some good ones in those searches. Trouble Shooter for Genny, Little Ninja Kids for NES, Virtua Fighter Kids for Saturn, among others.

I'm broke, otherwise I'd be cllecting everything and anything I can find. :(
