1981 - Atari 2600... As a 3 year old I figured out how to plug it in to the TV. From there on I was hooked.
1987 - Nintendo... This is the watershed moment for me in games... While I loved my 2600 early on, the NES in my humble opinion was so far better than anything else I'd ever seen, I just never cared to look back any further than this.
1991 - Super Nintendo... I very briefly toyed with the Genesis, but upon seeing Final Fantasy 2 (IV) would be an SNES exclusive, then renting an SNES with games like Actraiser and hearing the incredible music, the Genny was very short lived. Roadkill... umm... Sonic wasn't enough to keep me in the Sega camp, and games like Street Fighter 2 were coveted to a much greater extent by my friends with Genesis' than by me with anything they had. This is quite possibly my favorite system of all time.
1995 - Sega Saturn... While I liked the PlayStation to an extent, it simply had no RPG's at first which is why I stuck to my Saturn far more often. You loved this system if you imported games, 'nuff said.
1996 - Nintendo 64... If only for the love of one game... Mario 64. In many ways this is still the best 3D platformer ever made, and the main reason why I still can't play and enjoy games like Jak, Blinx, or any other Mario 64-wannabe.
1997 - PlayStation... It took Sony forever to get their heads out of their ass on RPG's (now how about 2D games, Sony? :P), but once they did there was very little to keep me away from the dark side of game consoles. Sure such and such game could have been better on another system, but if the developer would only make it on the PSX, what choice did we really have?
1999 - Dreamcast... This system only died thanks in part to all of the morons out there that willed it to die in the face of the PS2 hype. For a system with such a short life span, it's hard to come to grips with how many incredible games were released for it. I'm glad titles like Inhabitants and Maqiupai from the Goat Store are still being released for the DC even today. Man, what a short, great ride this system was.
2001 - GameCube... With what seemed like a bunch of really shitty PS2 games at the time (FFX & Tekken Tag aside), it came as a great relief when Nintendo finally released their new system and games. If MS had just one more decent title other than Halo, this year could have changed...
2003 - PlayStation 2... History repeats and once again I found that to play such and such a game I couldn't pick up an Xbox or 'Cube rev because developers either forgot the systems or were paid by Sony to forget them. But...
2004 - Xbox... Aside from the scant few Sony-paid exclusives and Nintendo-published titles, nearly every 3rd party game seems to be in even better form on the Xbox, and surprisingly, MS finally has more than a couple exclusives worth getting excited over.
Later.

My Video Gaming Lineage... (so far, as of 2005)
(Some of these dates are rough guesses, as I don't remember exactly when I got everything)
1978: RCA Studio II (yes, my first. Not the best, but it was a start)
This one didn't last too long. It died a few years later, and was never repaced.
1980: Odyssey2 (the one that really got be into video games, and my favorite)
The big one for me. Still collecting for and playing this system today.
1981: Intellivision (the expansion begins, with this cool system)
I love this old unit. Don't play it much anymore, but it got lots of use in the late 80's.
1984: ColecoVision (bought during the crash)
Got used a lot in the 80's. Today, doesn't get too much use, as I only have 1 good working unit (and I'm afraid to break it).
1984: Vectrex (also got this during the crash, at a really good price too)
This one comes and goes. I get these moments were I'll play it for a while, then it gets packed away for over a year.
Mid 80's: Atari 2600 (late in starting, but here it was)
This one is always setup someplace in the house, just for the odd game of Space Invaders or something else.
Mid 80's: Atari 5200 (got it all used, nothing new)
Played this for a bit in the late 80's. Has been boxed away for years now. I really should pull this one out someday.
Late 80's: Atari 7800 (it was this, or the horrible NES!)
Gets some use, during those times when I feel like pulling it out. I really need to get this thing out and hook it up to the Cuttle Cart II.
1989: Atari Lynx (got it shortly after the release date)
Played thing thing way too much during the early 90's. I still play it off and on.
Early 90's: Genesis (hated Nintendo at the time, so I got this)
This one got lots and lots of use. Now, though, it sits in the corner of my room, waiting for my attention again.
1993: Atari Jaguar (the only system I got on it's launch date)
I love the Jaguar, and played it for a long time, up until the end of the 90's. Now I hardly touch it anymore.
Mid 90's: TurboGrafx-16 (got it when they were selling out)
This is the least used of all my systems. For some reason, I keep this thing package away in it's original box. Only gets played during conjunctions of all the planets.
Late 90's: Bally/Astrocade (very late in starting collecting for this system)
Get some use, when I'm in the mood for it.
Late 90's: Sony PlayStation
Got lots of use in the late 90's. Now it just gets used once in a while.
2000: Arcadia 2001 (just started collecting for this, for no know reason)
Got a lot of use in 2000. It has tappered off, but I still play from time-to-time.
Early 00's: SNES (got this when Toys'R'Us was selling out the last of these)
This one got played for about six months. Now it sits in a closet, begging for attention.
2003: Nintendo GameCube (picked the underdog, as I usually do)
Been playing this one since I got it. Damn cool system, even if it is not the most popular.
2004: Commodore 64 (got if from a friend for free)
I have yet to play this thing. I got some games for it, but haven't hooked it up yet.
2004: Fairchild Channel F (had this years before, but sold it. Starting again)
Ack! I only got this this again because it was at a GoodWill store for $3. I just couldn't pass up this horrible deal. Have not touched it since.
2004: Nintendo GBA SP (would not get a gameboy until it was backlit)
Play this one every single week since I bought it. Marvelous system.
2004: TI 99/4a (just picked this up last year at the Midwest Classic)
Like the C-64. Waiting to be hooked up. Did buy some games and joysticks for it though.
That's my timeline for the moment. More to come, for sure...
