...and boy did it hurt.

Sorry, just had to do that.

Anyway the latest Rare game for Xbox is a very fun title. The story unfolds in a comic book like manner where we see our hero and his girlfriend hiking to the next town. To get a rest, they stop at a house that is run by some crazy dude (name escapes me at the moment, has the word Ghoul in it) and he goes and captures the hero's gal to "teach him a lesson in manners" after the boy says how creepy the place is.

The game is split into many areas of the house and grounds. Each area requires you to do a specific thing to move on from beating up all the enemies, beating up certain enemies, finding keys, and so forth. Thus far it's been a lot of beating up on things but the METHODS is what keeps the game fresh thus far. Most everything can be beat up and there are weapons you can pick up and use like pool cues, chairs, plates, hams, stacks of hamburgers, small bottles of bubbly, and more. You use the left stick to move and the right stick to fight. Take a bit of getting used to but it all works naturally. A button picks items up and B drops them and the triggers swivel the camera. That's it. You also get area specific weapons like a garlic gun, holy water filled super soaker (with realistic streaming water), fire extinguishers and more I'm sure (I'm not that far into it). At certain parts, something will jump out to scare you. The game shifts to a Shemue-ian Action Sequence where you have to hit buttons in a sequence to survive the fight.

In Rare form, this game has a lot of style. The Ghoulies will interact with themselves before the see you and you can watch them dance or have arguments. Nothing made me bust a gut laughing when I went into the Ball Room. If you get the game, you'll see what I mean. Masterful. Enemies will bound after you and if they hit a friend they will look shocked and will slump and shake their heads. Some will cower when you beat them up enough. Then when you hit them hard enough, they will make a cute yelp and will go flying into the air. Without this humor this game probably would become rather boring. Rare also knows how to animate. Everything has a cell shade BUT Rare does it right. It really does look like a cartoon and not an aspiration like many titles out there.

If you are an Xbox owner and want something different, give it a rent as it is a bit different and may not be everyone's cup of tea.

This sounds fun! Have to check it out :)

Spread the word, I hope my post will get somebody else to read it (i.e. a bump)

It's a lot of fun, and E-rated fun at that. Obviously targeted at kids, and thus on the short/easy side, but it's nice to see Rare back on the playing field.

I forgot to mention the fascinating blurb on the front of GbtG's box: "From the creators of Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie." It's definitely not every day you see one first-party's games mentioned on another first-party's packaging.

Heh, whoops! Hope Nintendo doesn't spot that one.

You can also very briefly spot Banjo and Kazooie in the game's opening sequence (a ghost flipping through a series of books). I haven't yet recorded the sequence to see if Rare sneaked any other past references in there.
