View Full Version : Which style do you prefer? Realism or Combos?

Bushido Blade vs. Soul Calibur

I'm not comparing graphics, as the latest SC game kicks the crap out of both the BB games. I'm talking about style.

I like realism in my games. I love the fact that when you cut your opponent in BB it actually has an effect on him. If you cut his arm he can only fight one handed. If you cut 1 leg he visibly limps, or both legs he can only roll around on his back. If they made a new BB game for PS2 I'd buy it in a second.

While others really like Soul Calibur for it's fast pace and combo moves. However, you can gut your opponent and he just gets up and fights on.

So, which do you prefer?

I agree that it's kind of silly that you can hack somebody up in SC with no apparent ill effect (until the life bar hits zero). And I really like BB. But they're two completely different types of fighters, and I think SC packs enough fun that I can overlook the silliness.

When I looked at the topic, I thought you were referring to the Street Fighter / Virtua Fighter split. I like the Virtua Fighter simulated martial arts style better than the Street Fighter "input a joystick combo and shoot fire out your ass" style. But then, I really suck at inputting the ass-fire-shoot commands, so maybe it's just sour grapes.

To tell you the truth, I prefer nonrealistic fighting games. Guess Im use to those kind. As in Virtua fighter and Bushido blade, they are for the real warriors, because they have a high learning curve. I've been playing the Tekken series for a good while now, and when I switched to Virtua fighter, I've seen what a real fighting game is. I played BB once, but never really got into it. I dont mind playing a realistic fighter, but you have to have
patience.

That's an interesting point, about the high learning curve for the more "realistic" fighting games. I do like games with a high learning curve. But then, I like shmups, too, which have almost zero learning curve. I guess you like what you like.

For the poll i would have put Capcom vs. SNK vs. Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
CvS is pretty realistic while MvC2 is just a combo fest. (Which i love. :) )
I am extrememly good at Virtua Fighter 4, so i do like realistic, but i do lean towards combos.

CvS realistic? How man people you know in real life that can shoot fire balls from their hands? Virtua fighter is realistic. With real martial Arts moves and stratergy. Just because you cant super jump in CvS, doesnt make it realistic x_x

I thought we were gonna go juggling/comboing too, which is THE reason I stopped playing fighter games. You should NEVER be able to hit someone with them having no chance to block, counter, or recover.

Indeed, those long, difficult-to-memorize button combos are a conceptual non sequitur that can easily rival the ol' first-aid-kit-in-an-oil-barrel.

Notwithstanding Jorpho's comment, combos for me. Limbs hacked off in fighting games = DUMB.

Of course, I'm the type that thinks the blood in Last Blade 2 is just a nuisance (clutters up the screen LOL )

Whoah, there. Nobody said anything about limbs being hacked off. And even if they WERE hacked off in Bushido Blade, well, it's (mostly) a sword fighting game.

Yeah, Astaroth just hit Sophitia with an axe as large as her entire body. Thank goodness she only took 30% damage.

It's all just style and design choice meeting the player interface, anyway. I can understand not wanting "blood" graphics to obscure the player positions if you're really into a serious match. And allowing player damage to progressively reduce player capability (or even one-hit-kill) is merely another, interesting (and yes, more realistic) design choice.

Who's played the old CGA PC game Death Sword? That's sword fighting at its finest. The spinning overhead neck chop decapitation was simply brilliant.

I recall a similar game from that era known as Barbarian. (That was C64 only, though, I think.)

IRL combat is usually decided quickly. If you've been around real fighting (weapons or otherwise) typically it's a 1 hit "kill."

This is one of the primary reasons I like Bushido Blade 1 & 2. Anybody can win at any time. It really keeps you on your toes.

I prefer non-realistic. I play a game to as far AWAY from reality as I can get. Plus, no one in real life can throw fireballs at each other (that we KNOW of ;) ), and specials make a goof fighter that much more interesting.

There was a pretty recent PC game which has a set of controls for movement and a seperate set for sword stuff, you could hack off critter limbs and pick em up to use em as weapons... Wish I could remember what the damn thing was called. There was also that TimeWarriors(?) game for the PC and Amiga and Arcade which had fun limb/head removal. I like piles of gore, they keep the monster inside quiet through a little simulated catharsis and keep me from running soccer moms off the road and killing and eating them in a fit of road rage.

Yeah, I think one was either a port or clone of the other. I have no idea which, though.

I said CvS, because i had to compare a 2d to a 2d, i guess if you wanted i could have put MvC2 vs. BB, but it sounded awkward to me. CvS is only realistic, because of the fighting engine, not the fireballs part. It seems more like 1 on 1 to me.
