View Full Version : Titles Never to Be Used Again

I love the titles used in some of the older systems. Everyone just made games and it seemed alot simpler, you could make a title and just have fun with it. Now, it seems like everything is so damn serious, even the titles. As we get more and more games, we are going to see some recycling, but some titles we know are never to be used again...

The Dated titles:
Sneak 'N Peek (or anything with 'N in it for that matter)
Cosmic Arc, Avenger, Crisis, etc.
Space Jockey
Championship or Deluxe _________
Omega (fill in the blank)
Anything using the word Bionic

The Descriptive Titles:
Picnic, Oink!, Shark! Shark!, White Water, Race, etc.

How I miss the old titles... :(

If we're lucky, we'll never see the word "Turok" in another video game ever again.

u r right
best example: Conflict Desertstorm 2: BACK TO BAGHDAD
this goes to far IMO

but there are also exemptions:
"Viewtiful Joe" is great, "Super Monkey Ball" also
or what about "Pikmin" or the awesome GBA-shooter "Invader"

Sadly, we're gonna see the word "Extreme" and "Ultimate" more times then we'd like...

The name "Trojan" for the nes won't be used again. They should make a sequel: Super Trojan!

Oh come on, they would HAVE to name it....

TROJAN-MAN!

...or the awesome GBA-shooter "Invader"

I decided that a shooter on GBA would be cool, so I looked it up. Was this only released in Europe? I would really like a copy of this game.

Game publishers don't use "extreme"; they use the dreaded non-word "xtreme," which must be stopped at all costs. I even (jokingly) deduct points, and explain why I've done so, when I review a game with "xtreme" in the title.

Anything with Ops in the title. Or the word Fantasy. Or Quest. Or Dragoon. Or "cool spellings" (ie Hitz, Hoopz, Xtreme Shitz). Or sequels numbered higher than 3. Or the word Space. Or Star(s).

Watch as Cap'n Wrong opens up a can o' ol' fart on the gaming industry! Sounds like somebody's bowels are acting up today. :eek 2:

So you better not try to stop Panzer Dragoon uh, well, what, fiffie? What the hell language is "Orta", anyway? And you know, this thread is supposed to be about names that won't be used again, not names that shouldn't be used again. Even if the latter is more entertaining.

Like, there should never be another game called Final Fantasy. But what are the chances of that? I mean, FF isn't just a title any more; It's a friggin' brand. Like Mennen. Or Massengil. I look forward to the day I can buy Final Fantasy Brand cat food and buttwipe. (YES THOSE ARE TWO SEPARATE PRODUCTS, DUR HUR)

ANything involving Plaque, or tooth in the name.

Super. I bet we won't see that one again.

...fat chance I know.

Heh @ Cap'n Wrong's "Xtreme Shitz." I actually like Xtreme G 2, by the way.

I thank whatever gods govern gaming that we've dispensed with the "64" suffix given to countless Nintendo 64 games. Putting "Super" in front of SNES titles may have been tolerable, but Nintendo's attempt to make a number its newest brand didn't stick.

Or sequels numbered higher than 3.

Ye would blaspheme Metal Slug? Turn in your Supergun on the way out, sir.

Baah! My version is more fun, so there. :P And when are my bowels not releasing on the industry? Someone has to be the crotchety old timer around here and no one else seems willing to step up.

(And yeah, I think MS3 was the pinnacle of the series. I'll be first in line to check out 5, but 4 didn't grab me.)

On topic, things we'll never see again:

Related to what Fenris said, bit numbers in the title. No Super Mario 128 or 256.

Sport games that are just called the name of the sport. Well, I guess a $10 PSX release could just be called Football, but they haven't released one yet.

Games with "Rad" in the title.

Games with the hardware manufacturer in the title. (Sorry kids, no "Circus Microsoft".)

uh sorry my fault: I think it was released in US as "Kaisertal" and not "Invader". Actually I hope it was even released in US cause I found nothing in amazon and ebay. Anyways.....get it! Best shooter on GBA.
Just make sure u disable "infinite continues"!!!!

On the contrary:

Konami's XXXXX Deluxe Packs (LOTS of them, that use the words Deluxe) released some years ago... but not THAT old, and could happen again.

Charge 'n' Blast - a crap Dreamcast game, but illustrates that there can be games released with 'N' in it. This is less than 2 years old.

What was the latest game released with the word "Super" in the title?

Those are wacky Japanese games! They don't count. :P
Cosmic Smash wasn't that long ago either.

What I would love to see used again though is Mark III. If they called the next Playstation, PS Mark III, I'd think it would be great. It just sounds so much better than just PS3...

Aw. But what about Virtua Fighter 4?

Anyway, one game-naming trend that I actually like is the tendency of Japanese developers to give their work bizarrely cool English titles. Gungrave, Viper Phase 1, Guybrave, Gunbird, Demon Front, Dolphin Blue, Gunners Heaven, G.O.D, Slapstick, Panzer Bandit, etc. Instant comedy.
