View Full Version : What's the Oldest Unbeaten Game You Own?

While straightening up my gaming center, I ran across a few games that I haven't beaten. One of these is the NES title, The Adventures of Bayou Billy. No matter how hard I try, I can't beat that game. If I'm not getting the crap kicked out of me by enemies that eat my powerup turkey leg, then I'm getting ambushed by 12' long reptiles in the swamp. Thanks, Konami, for a game that no one can beat without writing a fictional novel about it.

Adventures of Bayou Billy?
Now it was a looong time ago, but I vaguely remember beating that game. Didn't the end involve the game suddenly swtiching into a Vector graphics rendered ultrarealistic home family setting roughly akin to some sort of video nirvana?
No?
Then certainly it involved a cheap parody of Daisy Duke in her white and pink tied off belly shirt and a stolen motor scooter.
SF - I apologize to any Happy Wander Boys I may have offended. On second thought, no I don't.

Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom for NES. It's the only pre-collecting game I own and have not beat. It's that damn level 9 (or is it 10) where you have to make skulls stay afloat on the lava to build a bridge to the other side. Is it even possible? Has anyone here ever done it? I've spent so much time waiting for a skull to appear in the spot I need but it never does. Plus you need TNT to make them stay afloat and I always run out of it. I even tried to cheat using game genie but there is no code to start on the next level. If somebody out there knows how to beat this game, for the love of God please let me know! It's been haunting me since 1991!!!!!!

Wasteland for the apple ][e. Absolutely my favorate game of all time. (sidenote.. if anyone has some input. I have the old PC version too but its totally unplayable. Something to do with it spawning millions of enemys probably because of processor speed). I may be doomed to never finishing that game.
For the 7800, Xevious, just frickn hard. And for the NES, marble madness (if there even is an end) is way too high on the frustration level.

As for me... hmmm. I'm sure there are lots of 2600 titles (Solaris) that I haven't beaten. But the one title that stands out in my mind as one I had WANTED to beat but never could was probably... Actraiser 2! Lordy that was such a dissapointment :( ... and way too difficult as well

I remember Indiana Jones for the NES... never beat it, but got damn close.
Some games I've never beaten, but tried:
Record of Lodoss War (DC) - even cheated, and still couldn't get through it. It's long.
Popful Mail MegaCD - never got around to finishing it
Startling Odyssey - Turbo Duo. Got to the end, but will never finish it. Long story.

Final Fantasy. The first one, for NES. I have a policy against levelling up because I feel it takes the challenge out of a game, yet, ironically, it is because of this exact policy that I can't seem to defeat Kraken.

My oldest game I've never beaten was the first one I ever bought on my own: The Adventures of Rockey and Bullwinkle, NES. That was so hard back in the day, and I still can't get through it today.

Star Voyager is hard, even when you figure out what to do.
Trying to figure out how to fly the helicopter in Infiltrator is maddening. Luckily there is a game guide for Infiltrator in one of Zach Meston's NES tip books.
I think there are 4 levels in Marble Madness...though there could be 5. It's been awhile.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom just got a nice FAQ written for it earlier this year. Pretty much explains everything. The Tengen and Mindscape versions are identical.

There are ends to Fairchild and 2600 games?!? HOLY CRAP!!!

That and this game (though someone beat me to the joke)
Here's something strange though. One of the PONG systems I have is called a Bentley Compu-Vision. I looked at the paperwork that came with it and it's dated 1983... Why the HELL was a PONG SYSTEM released in 198-frickin-3?!? It's not even a color system! Just a standard one with 4 game variations!!!
For Christ's sake, Japanese kids were playing on their Famicoms in 1983!!!

I have a complete Bentley Compu-vision as well, and I remember thinking the exact same thing: 1983! Wha?!? I think their counter-argument is thus (quoting the outside of the box):
"A self contained system requiring no additional cartridges or expense."
It's also good marketing to cheap parents who think that they will never have to buy another game for little Johnny.

I still have Final Fantasy Legend II on hand. I stopped playing some time ago when I was partway through the Nasty Dungeon. I decided that I was probably going to have to start over, since I accidently erased my male mutant's Blizzard spell early in the game, and it seems to be quite important at that stage.

Oldest un-beaten game, eh? Well pre collecting days, I'd say Street Fighter 2010... I've gone back and beaten almost all of the games that as a kid I thought were impossible, Mega Man 3 became a 45 minute excursion for example, but street Fighter 2010 for the nes seems to be impossible if you die anyhwere in the last level, cuz you don't have enough power ups when you restart to kill the boss...
post collecting I have hundreds of games tht I haven't beaten, but E.T. comes to mind...

I have 2 answers for this question. I started collecting back in 1998. At that point I was starting from scratch. I kept none of the of systems from my youth. So my first answer is from is the game I've had in my collection since then. I have sold most of my collection over and over for financial reasons but I kept G-Police the whole time. What a great game, despite the draw in problem. This is the game I've owned the longest that I haven't finished
The second answer is Master Blaster. I was never able tofinish it in high school. Technically it is the oldest game I own that I have actually failed to finish. I don't really count the old Atari games I don't even play.

But what about my courage?" asked the Lion, anxiously. "You have plenty of courage, I am sure," answered Oz. "All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. True courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty." "Perhaps I have, but I’m scared just the same," said the Lion. "I shall really be very unhappy unless you give me the sort of courage that makes one forget he is afraid."

Well, I consider few Atari VCS games as "beatable". Someone mentioned Pitfall, and I never considered it beatable until now. I guess getting all the items in under 20 minutes would be beating it.
Other Atari games I never beat include Riddle of the Sphinx, Swordquest Earthworld and Fireworld (they sucked).
After that, there's a huge backlog of Commodore 64 adventures I never finished. I still have the C64, disks, games, and files full of notes and maps for those games. Some I am very close on and still boot up and work on from time to time. Bard's Tale 1-3, Ultima II - V, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Questron, the Shard of Spring, and so on.
With those, I got close to the end about the time the next one came along. Some of them, like Bard's Tale, are so good that I almost hate to finish them, like a fine bottle of wine with only a few sips left.
In summary, the list of games I never finished is longer than the list of ones I did finish. Hopefully I'll live forever and have time to go back and finish them all.

I would also have to say Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. GREAT game. I love it a lot. But it is very hard. I have made it to the final level (or what I think is the final level)and it seemed near impossible. The level is where you have to find the three shankara stones and take them somewhere. Well, the stones are all in a different place and each is surrounded by lava, so you have to make a bridge to make it to each one. But, to make it even more challenging, if you get touched by an enemy you drop the stones that you are carrying and you have to go back to where they are and repeat the process again. Very frustrating game, but for sure one of my favorites.

That's not the last level, it's only level 10 (of 12). Level 10 is impossible without the map on gamefaqs.
I also posted this as my unbeaten game a long time ago in this thread. However, with some perserverance, and a gamefaqs walkthrough, I was finally able to beat it in one game.

Hmmm, this took me forever to beat. The last dungeon is really weird, with disappearing floors and random traps.
But for me the oldest game I have that I have NEVER beatne is The Caverns Of Khefka for the atari 800xl. I played this so many times when I was a kid and could never figure out WTF you are supposed to do!? Does anyone know? I kinda just run around and grab the idols then get stuck at a dead end.
