At our recent gamer gathering it seemed I was getting a little behind on the 4-player action. The "classics" are getting a little worn out here, and while we can always go back to the well for a game of Beach Spikers, Monkey Ball, or Halo, I'd really like to update my library with quality 4-player simultaneous player games, especially anything that's come out over the past year.

Suggestions?

Keep in mind that I don't have any real friends (read: not online), but I have played a few of these with at least one other person:

As far as party games, I vote Mario Party 4 for GameCube and Kung-Fu Chaos for Xbox. Cel Damage is also good for either system.

As far as first-person shooters, I would suggest Timesplitters 2 and Red Faction 2 for any system. Red Faction 2 looks a little washed out on the Cube, though.

I've only played fighting games against other people on PS2...

I bought Rayman Arena for $4.99 at EB this weekend, but I haven't tried it out yet. It seems to be a multiplayer title along the lines of Mad Dash Racing...

I would wait on Mario party 4. Mario party 5 will be coming out pretty soon. Hunter the reckoning is good.

Super Smash Bros Melee should definitely be one of the games.

I don't know.. I actually don't like this game very much.

And Super Monkey Ball 2 is much better than 1.

Well I do agree that Monkey Ball 2 is better than 1, but why can't we have both :D

I've also got to nominate - sight-unseen - the upcoming Gamecube multiplayer Pac-Man. That game is just conceptually enough to sell me on the machine.

I second Kung-fu chaos, it got bad reviews , but I enjoyed it a quite a bit. also mario golf for the Cube, mario tennis on the 64 still is fun especially doubles(good drunk game), Gauntlet dark legacey,GC or Xbox or bust out the DC and play some ooga booga, I too have logged over 300 hours of smash bros melee action at my place, and lead or VS stats with over 13,000 kills:)

As I said somewhere else, if I never play Mario golf again, it will be too soon. Maybe it's because we played the links for about 70 years and not the minigolf version, but man, is that crapola tedious.

Because I can't win by button mashing! :)
Well, that, and I don't like the perspective. Everything is so.. far away. I just didn't have any fun with it.

It may not be from the last year, but it certainly was a hit at my last party,

Bomberman Online for the Dreamcast. :)

The multiplayer pac man is a ton of fun! The game is done really well, just be sure that you have at least three GBAs and three GC-GBA link cables.

Stuff for the Cube...!

Mario Golf
F-Zero GX (though best between players of equal skill)
Mario Kart DD (yeah it's not out yet but I've played a bit to know it's gonna rock!)
Made in Wario GC (Japan only so far)
FF: Crystal Chronicles (Japan only so far)

Wha...? I thought the scales were tipped the other way (i.e. 3 standard GC controllers and only one GBA/link cable). Everything I've read indicated that only one player needed a GBA.

Yep. Ghosts all play on the TV using GC controllers, Pacman is on the GBA via the link cable.

This is a tad old. But you can't beat worms for the dreamcast. You can;t

Not new either, but Fur Fighters has a split screen first person shooter game in it. I liked the game on the DC, but have not played it on the PS2 yet. I guess it'll have it too, have not opened mine up yet.

It may be tired, but Man oh Man do I love Goldeneye for the n64. Quite possibly the only reason to own that accursed machine.

At personal gatherings in Delaware we have the following multiplayer games work well, most on N64

Mario Kart 64
Bomberman (any 4+-player edition works well)
GoldenEye
Perfect Dark
Mario Party 1,2,3
WCW/NWO Revenge

We do rounds of 2player Gain Ground, and Crack Down for Genny too :P

Oops my bad! I was thinking of Crystal Chronicles, which as I understand it, is another good multiplayer game coming out, but it's gonna be awhile for that bad boy.

Whew...thanks for clearing that up. I couldn't see how they could possibly expect someone to round up 3 GBAs for this one game.

Now I just gotta train my cats to play the ghosts. Heck, they love chasing stuff. This oughta be right up their alley.
