Entirely my own fault, I should have put in a higher bid. Obvious in retrospect, but until 1 min before the end it was at 86 euros, and i thought 212 would be enought to clinch it.
Plus i swear that the last 20 seconds went a lot quicker than twenty seconds... i hit refresh and the auction was over, and there was no way that page took 20 seconds to load!
I only really wanted it for Mega Man... I've got most of the rest. And i'd already arranged with the seller that if I won he would only send the games and not the machine to keep my postage down.
 Note to self: don't be such a cheapskate next time. hmph!

If you wanted to pay more for it, then you should have bid more! stupid snipers, I'll never understand it.

If you want to snipe, use www.esnipe.com.
Sniping saves money - its better to snipe than to constantly bid up an item.

It's not as simple as that Arr! Suppose I would pay x pounds / euros / dollars for an item. Would I pay x + 1 pounds / euros / dollars for it if I had to? Almost certainly - especially if it is a large amount. So where do you draw the line? Because you could go on saying "well, I wouldn't mind paying a LITTLE bit more" ad infinitum.
Perhaps it is different for you. Perhaps you always know exactly to a penny how much you would pay for anything, and if it goes one penny over then tough titty, it's out of your budget so you are happy to let it go.
The thing about ebay is that if you get beat, you are almost always going to get beat by small increment, which is irritating, because someone else gets what you wanted for next to nothing over what you bid. But that's life. Maybe the guy who beat me put in a max of 400 Euros, I'll never know. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but I reserve the right to be a bit pissed off for losing!!
And I have been stung in the past by people who have come in at the last moment and bid $1 over my max. I know this because in one auction I waited till a few minutes before the end, and put a medium range figure in, and then in the last seconds, put in a new higher max. I won, but when I looked at the bid history, someone had come in just before the end and placed a single bid EXACTLY $1 above my early "medium range" bid. So how did they know what my earlier maximum was? I never bid round figures, so it would have had to have been a VERY lucky guess... in any case, I now never place a bid until the last moment on any auction I really want to win.

Ummm, yes, I DO always decide what the max is I'm willing to pay and then use esnipe to place a bid for me for that amount a few seconds before the end of the auction. That way I'm not caught up in the end of auction rush (just $1 more...darn!...maybe another $1) and end up paying twice what something is worth. If I win, fine - if not, no big deal since I bid my max.
The other advantage of sniping is that you don't alert others that they have competition. I've often won auctions at far less than I expected because noone knew they had competition.
It seems to have worked for me...950+ cartridges later, at least a few hundred off eBay...

I think it's variable rate based on the bid amount, and they should charge you only if you win. Used to be 100% free, then they changed to up to $25 free, and now it's not free at all. Still an useful service if you don't want to be up at 3:17 am trying to snip an auction. (especially useful if you're on dialup or slow internet connection)
