I am looking for a new way of displaying/storing my collection. I mostly have NES and Atari 2600 games. Any bright ideas?

kid of a braod topic, theres always the rooms of doom gameroom gallery on this site to inspire you. see menu at left, toward the bottom.
what works well and is pretty cheap is using other media storage shelves. NES games will fit nicely into unsectioned CD shelves, so will atari carts. genesis, master system games fit perfectly into cassete tape shelves and of course the current system games fit into DVD shelves. you can find these items cheaply at target or thrifts and build a nice wall to display your loose carts.

IKEA's Billy bookshelf with glassdoors works wonders.
See it HERE (http://www.ikea-usa.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&productId=16606&langId=-1&parentCats=10104*10173*10514)

For $358 he could get a more reasonable shelving system and some seriously cool items to put on them.

I've always hated the Ikea badnwagon, nothing against anyone who has them, they do look good, and I'm sure they're very adjustable, etc..etc..., but $358?! Plus shipping I imagine? So at minimum, you're talking $400 for a shelf.
Get some particle board shelving, and buy a current-gen console with 6 new release games instead for chrissakes. Or that ultra-rare collection finishing cart you've always thought was too expensive. Hell, I could finish my intellivision and odyssey 2 collection with $350....

For Atari...try to pick up one of those racks for the cartridges. I just got one along with my (first) Atari 2600, and it's quite nice.

Thanks for the ideas. Right now i am using wire shelves (for closets) turned on their side. The spacing is perfect for NES games. I know this doesent make sence without a picture, so i will post one tomorrow.

As far as storage for NES games. Go to walmart and get the 3 drawer plastic units. I think they are by iris brand. The big sized one is almost like a small dresser. Each drawer fits 4 rows of around 20 games per row. they fit nicely standing up so when you open the drawer you can read the end label. So the 3-drawer unit will hold around 240 NES games. The best part is that they are always $14.88 and come with casters. These are the units I use for all my game storage. They are cheap and keep the dust off everything.

DO NOT try to stack these. I used these for a long time, and they ARE great, but it LOOKS like you can stack them, having a 6-shelf high unit. From personal experience, and other horror stories, they are NOT meant to be stacked, and you don't want to find out why.

I'll second that... and even when not stacked they don't deal well with the weight of a full load of nes games.

Oh yeah, I had more games shipped (14 carts) than the rack can fit :P
Same thing with my N64 case, though it is very nice.

I have 2 of those that I bought from Bed Bath & Beyond. They are a different brand name but sound essentially the same. They are currently stacked, but the top on is only half full. What exactly what is supposed to happen?

Thanks for the warning guys. I didn't plan on stacking them, but this just cements that decision. I have one about 3/4 full of NES games and have not had a problem. You do have to watch it when opening a full drawer because if you pull it out too far it can fall out.
I am 100% pleased with this type of storage drawer. They are affordable and work well for my needs. All I know is that I can't justify spending a ton of money on storage when there are so many games I can buy with that money.

Try those long white boxes used for comic books. I keep boxed nes and snes games lined up in them, and they stack quite well. Ive got like 5 of em stacked in my closet. I got no where else to put the boxed games and I dont wanna colapse the boxes.

you said it: "look good", "very adjustable". Priorities vary.
but, pish posh. $358 is for both of the shelves in that picture, including the glass doors. They swallow a lot of games too. Not bad at all.
The old adage, you get what you pay for......
or, maybe that is why my gameroom looks better than yours.

As promised, here are a few pics of my current NES storage system. I love it but it is a bit bulky.

I finally got those pics right. Anyway, thanks for the compliment on the storage racks. I actually make them from wood and closet shelves. They cost about $16 to make (if i remember correctly). If you want more deatils send me a PM.

Well I gathered the boom crash etc, but does it crack apart, or drawers suddenly slide out or what? I just don't see what would be causeing a problem.

If you are not going for looks, I would reccommend going to Home Depot or Farm & Fleet and picking up some of the particle board shelving units. They cost about $30.00 and can hold a TON of stuff. You'll have to make shelve ends though.
I made this huge 3' by 6' storage thing for the GOAT Store and I love that, but I honestly couldn't even begin to describe it correctly... and it was a PAIN to make, and it looks worse than the particle board shelving units...
Come to think of it, I don't know why I like it so much...

I suggest Home Depot too. $30-50 or so and you can custom make your own. Of course, I never seem to JUST spend $30-50 when I go to Home Depot. I truly believe its impossible to walk out of there without having spent at LEAST $100.
*Mutters to self* Evil bastards. Always having everything I need. WHY! WHY MUST YOU HAVE EVERYTHING?!!
