i received this snes rockman x proto(mega man is rockman in japan)
today i had bought on yahoo japan some weeks ago.

im just wondering if it is a sample or a real inhouse prototype.
all the japanese capcom samples ive seen so far (super street fighter,demons blazeon) had their own cartridge housing and a sample label,this one here hasnt.
i dont know if its identical to the released japanese rockman x,but as far as i can recall,the bosses in the retail game didnt have any spelling errors in their names ;)

I would say that that is a proto, because it looks like Eproms, and as you said there are spelling errors. Play a little deeper, and see what turns out.

that's a proto. i'm not sure what you consider a "sample", but by looking at the board you can't tell whether they used it for testing or if they sent it out for review.

Neat stuff. To tell what stage of development it is in, you should test to see if the big level ender glitch still exists. It was in early production versions of the game.
Apparently, early run versions of this game had a major bug in them. With this bug, in certain spots in a level, if you fired your weapon, you would get the weapon you would get from beating the boss, and you would return to the level select screen. This trick may have only worked if you hit certain enemies. Capcom did the right thing and recalled this version.

I wonder if the proto with the daylight city level has ever surfaced. Previews of Mega Man X in Nintendo Power showed the intro level (normally set against a night sky) with a brilliant sunny sky with white structures. Different arrangements and had the green mini-boss from Sting Chameleon's level in it.

as i already said in the buying and selling forum:
from what i can see now,this cart is complete,i thought
it was some kind of beta because the bosses all have strange names,but the japanese retail version also has these strange names compared to the us and pal version.must have been some kind of preview sample then...
i havent played this thing very much,but i'd assume this bug is
in there.
i dont think theres such a level,at least not on my protocart ;)
as i said before,my proto seems to be near-final or final.

why can't you dump ntsc roms matty? i can dump ntsc carts with my SWC 24 ;)
is rockman X 24 Mbit or lower? if so i could dump it before sending it away, where do u live ragtime? i do live in marburg, hessen :)

Not 100% sure. But last time as I have try it, it doesn't work. First I need an Adapter for the NTSC game, because the Slot is to small for NTSC games. But last time it has do nothing. The Wild Card was like dead. And after that I have problems to get the Wild Card to work. Most it don't work anymore. Sometime no contact or something like that. @_@
So I don't know if this will work. Only good think, this NTSC game has no Case. So I don't need an Adapter. Maybe this will work better, when the Wild Card runs.

most backup units cant dump protocarts.
the usual thing a backup unit does before trying to dump a cart is scanning the entire address space for data.
it does this to determine the size of the cartridge.
the pld on a snes protocart that also handles mapping(lorom/hirom) and sram adress wrapping uses this "feature" of most backup units as a copy protection,
it crashes most copiers while scanning the rom.
if you have a pro fighter,it wont even boot,a gd7 will crash
when you try to dump the cart in the menu.
the super ufo can dump protocarts,im not sure about the swc dx2.
if you have an eprom programmer,this copy protection is useless of course,you can just read out the eproms,merge them to one file and maybe add/correct the rom info sector if it isnt present to make the game work in emulators.

i'll take the cart to a friend who has an eprom programmer(i hope he has one) tomorrow,but seriously,im not too excited about it,like i said in a previous post,i have checked it against the japanese retail version and i havent found any differences.

matty ntsc carts don't fit into your SWC???? my SWC 24MBit slot has enough space for US carts
ragtime thats good, hopefully it works, otherwise you could still TRY to dump it with a normal backup device, perhaps you are lucky
i just read a Ucon64 FAQ though, and it says Mega Man X (NTSC) need a mod to run on a SWC, not sure if that's also true for a proto ;)

auf alten backup units, kann sein das da mmx nicht ging,aber das ist nur sone läpsche sram-protection.
megaman x checkt beim booten,wieviel sram da ist.
da das megaman x originalmodul kein sram hat,weiss es logischerweise,das es auf ner backup unit läuft,wenn es trotzdem sram findet.(die meisten copier haben 256kbit sram onboard)
auf der dx2 läufts auch ohne patch,die stellt nämlich anhand des info sectors in einem rom fest,ob und wieviel sram das geladene spiel braucht,und
schaltet es ggf. aus.

basically i was saying that i wasnt able to dump the protocart with any of my 3 backup units,and that the megaman x copyprotection relies on the fact that most old backup units have their 256k onboard sram always enabled.
this copy protection has however nothing to do with my inability to dump the cart with a copier.

So maybe I have only try the wrong NTSC games to dump. X_x
But last time I have too problems when I have try it with PAL games, which has work before. So I think I have some problems with my WildCard, that it don't work so good.
But the slot for NTSC games are to small by mine. So I have try it with Adapter and this has not work.
But when the Prototype has a copyprotection or can't read bymost Copystations, then I think mine will too not work. @_@
So I hope, that someone can maybe dump it, before I try to win it. ;)
But I think this one will go to high for me too. O_O

evan i think i've got some info for your site, got 1 (small) screenshot of FX Fighter, BAD quality though, and i think the information given by Cooljerk is not quite true, if u want to i'll write down my info ;)
(e.g. he is saying the snes version should be like the pc version, this is imho total bullshit, i had the pc version back then and this would be impossible to do on a snes, and it also doesn't look like the screen i have!!!)
